David Shepherd RIP

One of the Cricket's great characters has passed away.

Shep, I hope you're making them smile wherever you are now with your tendancies as you did on earth.

    Poor form.

If he had any theatre in him he would of died on 11/11/11.

    RIP Shep.

RIP...one of the game's great characters and a decent player before he took up umpiring.

That's really sad news. As others have said a true character and will be much missed.

I had the pleasure of singing a few ribald songs in the bar with Shep on tour a few years back (yes...he knew all the words to the dirty ones too). He was just how you would imagine him to be....just really friendly, very unassuming and totally devoted to his local club, North Devon CC. The first thing he did when he arrived was go round the colts asking them how they'd been getting on recently, congratulating the ones who had been doing well and offering encouragement to those who hadn't. A very special man.

PS: Central contracts would have seemed a world away to him when he was a player at Gloucs, as the most he ever got was a one year deal at the end of the each season. Pretty sure he managed to get one 12 times before they finally let him go. Being a county cricketer was fun in those days....as long as you could put job security to the back of your mind!
