  • I heard her call my name - The Velvet Underground

Mind blowing sonic distortion and, what's this, necrophilia?
Nobody else was doing this post Summer of Love

I don't really care much for Lou Reeds solo career, he never got anywhere near what he achieved with the Velvets imo
  • The Waterboys - Modern Blues
  • Grand magus - grand magus. My colleague clearly has designs on turning me into a doom metal fan. Its working so far

I would say that his album Berlin can stand up to heights that the velvets reached.

    Elliot Smith - XO
    Elliot Smith - Figure 8
Elliot Smith - from a basement on the hill

pretty much having a bit of a session

    Berlin is a great album
I could never get into Berlin ( and I really did try) - all pomp and bathos.
To me the overblown production is at odds with the sordid minutae of the characters in the story.
Lou had already covered this ground in single songs where his concise lyrics, not a single word wasted, told you all you needed to know
Extending the story across an album has diluted the impact and really, the pathetic "story" doesn't stand up to such close scrutiny.
    IMHO.
    The musicianship is great though.

Ezrin also produced Alice Cooper, but in Alice's case I would argue the big productions worked due in part to Alice's self deprecating humour.

Having said all that, I probably haven't listened to Berlin since about 1975, so maybe a reappraisal is overdue!
    Sorry for wittering on :-)

Must check that out, great stuff.
  • The White Stripes-Elephant
  • one of the greatest feelings is finding a band that has completely slipped your attention but you immediately love so much of their work. Helps when they have released 8 albums so you can really indulge yourself. Some might already know this band if not then check them out. a lot of influences in their music - dinosaur jr, Neil Young, modest mouse and pavement.

    Built to Spill
  • Off With Their Heads - Home
From Indian Lakes - Absent Sounds
  • Interesting Alternative Show - Steve Davis' prog rock programme
