Have we been found out ?

edited October 2009 in General Charlton
Southampton H 1-1 11th if you add back their 10 points
Norwich A 2-2 6th
Exeter H 2-1 16th
Colchester A 0-3 3rd
Leeds A 0-0 1st
Oldham H 0-0 9th

So we've played 5 teams in the top half and only lost once. Not necessarily "found out", more a case of playing the better teams I would say.

Soton, Exeter and Oldham at home I would have hoped for 7 points and we got 5

Norwich, Colchester and Leeds away, I would have hoped for 2 points, which we got.

Overall 5 out of 6 tough games, which I'd hope we'd have got 9 points and we got 7.

Not great but I don't think we're heading for mid table either.

nope. you only have to look at the table and that we are still only second and that nothing else matters.
  • Looking at the table this morning should sober up our more expectant support. No way was this ever going to be a two horse race. Its up to Mr Parkinson our born again saviour and our born again squad of players to push on and up.
  • No, better teams but hopefully it makes the expectations a little more realistic. This was never going to be an easy league.

Three of the six are part of the 'big four' along with us. Colchester was our one defeat in which we made some bad mistakes and Oldham are a top half team that don't score many but defend well to make up for it.

Southampton we had two goals disallowed, one when watching back was onside. Norwich we conceded in the 90th minute.

Of course results are important, but the performances have to be considered as well. We need to start winning again, but we've done ok in a run of hard games and weren't far off winning all but the Colchester game. Looking at the fixtures we've got plenty more hard games coming up soon, I think we were pretty lucky to have the run of fixtures we did have at the start of the season.
  • Only to the extent that we don't play as physical game as some of the team we've played recently (Oldham aside), I think that is our weakness in this league. Oldham actually defended very well yesterday, particularly in the first half.
  • YEP, we have been found out...plain as...
  • Have to ask what exactly it was that people expected us to do this season ?

    Win 40 out of 46 matches ?

Its amazing how people's memories play tricks with them. A lot of people in the summer thought there was a bigger chance of us being relegated again than winning promotion.

We haven't got a natural goalscorer who is going to score a serious amount of goals, so there is no way we are going to batter teams, or walk this league. Never was.

But we have lost 1 in 12, one defeat in the first quarter of the season. Everyone of us would have given our right arm for that 3 months ago, so i think we need to keep a little bit of perspective.
  • Have we been found out ?

No, but the management team and several of the players have

Well said AFKA. I don't think anyone would have said we'd have only lost 1 league game in 12. We're doing better than probably everyone expected with a small squad and limited options to change things around. Nothing to worry about at the moment.
  • Who in their right minds ever imagined that Burton and Shelvey would be able to continue their blistering start of season form throughout the whole season? Take the effectiveness of Burton out of that formation and what's left? Not much! We left ourselves over dependent on the form of just one player. Hence the need for the plan B, which perhaps we saw in the second half. Just maybe things may have been different had plan B started the game.

I think this squad is far better than it thinks it is. Players like Bailey, Racon, Sam, Semedo, Shelvey, Burton,Dailly, Youga are too good for this league and should be playing at a higher level. The reason that they are not is down to one man IMO, Mr Pardoo.
I truely believe that we have the potential within this squad to tear this league apart. To do so we need to believe in our own ability and play an expansive open style of football at home and keep it tight away from home. If Leeds are the benchmark, we should be fearing no one in this division. If we are content to simply finish top half or scrape into the play offs, then I think we are grossly under selling ourselves. We should never have found ourselves in this league in the first place with the players we had at our disposal last season.

  • let's be realistic we should be happy if we finish above mid table or millwall ........ anyone with higher aspirations for our club are living in cuckoo land and should enjoy the great feeling we've had at being in such a lofty position in the table....

and to those who pointed out we'd had a great start cos we'd played the dross of this pony league , well you could be right
still at least we're still 5th2nd and we've only lost 1 game and there's no way we will slide down the table, not with this return to form of our vintage non goal scoring strikers
  • If we'd won 1-0 pretty much all of us would be happy. It's still early days for this squad and let's be honest they haven't had the best of luck/ref decisions (well perhaps the pen call y'day) so far. Confidence is a major factor though. So they don't need slagging off. Bet Izale is feeling like sh*t today thinking he has let everyone down. Getting promoted will need the fans input as well. So stop feeling sorry for ourselves and get behind the team (all of them). Expectations are high after our start but football is football and Charlton are Charlton (when did we ever do anything the easy way). It's what we know and makes the success even sweeter. COYA!
  • I think our game plan has been found out as eventually it would if you play the same team and formation week-in and week-out. Unfortunately I don't know if Parky can do anything about it. With the players we have then the least we should be expecting is a top six finish. I doubt I would have said that at the beginning of the season but apart from six or seven teams the others are of a poor standard albesit hardworking and extremely organised. However, when you are coming up against teams like that you have to have the nous to break them down, something we don't appear to have. For me Racon is our best player, and in a midfield five he should be getting forward a lot more and being our box to box player knowing he can do so as there is plenty of cover. For him not to have scored yet is poor imo.

I know what you mean and he's not quite been as good as I hoped and know he can be. Seems to do well and then get decisions wrong, which at his best he doesn't very often. He's not a goalscorer like Bailey but perhaps he should be taking more risks to get into those positions more often, especially if we get Semedo back. I've noticed Shelvey and Racon aren't getting as many shots as they did at times last season. It's hard when opponents have most of their team in and around their area getting in the way, but we could do with those two scoring more than they have so far, and in games like the Oldham one we need them to have more shots than they did.
  • If we make the play offs it will be a great acheivement from Parky. Whilst our first 11 may be one of the better teams, our squad is not. When games come thick and fast we'll need a fair bit of luck with injuries.
  • We've only started to drop points since Semedo has been out of the team...

The problem is at the other end of the pitch. We haven't scored for 3 league games now and Semedo played against Saints and Norwich.

games we scored goals in. i'm not saying Semedo is our 20 goal a season man but in my opinion, his partnership with Racon in the middle has often calmed the tempo of the game down and his passing has lead to the more creative players being able to create chances - something we barely managed to do until Mcleod came on to miss them all.
  • There's certainly no need to panic yet although we've gone 3 games without scoring. Saturday we didn't play well, could've won it through McLeod or one of the efforts that hit the bar, yet equally could've lost it if they'd got a penatly. No need to panic yet. My only hope is that maybe Parky has learnt a lesson and the team showed more urgency once we went to 442. 451 has served us well but at home i always feel we need the extra striker and certainly someone like McLeod to run into the channels stretching defences and chasing balls over the top.
  • For some reason Racon seems to drop deeper when Semedo's not playing (taking on more defensive responsibility?), and in turn Shelvey gets sucked back in to midfield a lot more, leaving Burton isolated up front. Where we started the season playing 4-4-1-1 with the midfield reasonably high up the pitch, Saturday definitely seemed more like 4-5-1, with a depressingly large gap between the 5 and the 1.

  • teams have watched us play and know how to try and stifle us.ie 90% of our threat comes through Sam and Shelvey. So double up on sam (with oldham it was sometimes 3) and drop a midfilelder back to sit in the hole to stop shelvey. Always going to be more difficult than when it wasnt surprise in first few games. However nobody has more quality than us in this division (including leeds who we outplayed) and I'm still confident we'll be there or thereabouts. however there are clearly some things to work out which will decide whether it's there or abouts! Big question is what should Shelvey do and how should he play when confronted with the incessant wall. Continuinuing to drop deeper to pick up the ball is tempting but can add to the problem - and dont slate him for doing it as I've seen gerrrard do exactly the same for liverpool. My belief is we should keep playing football, keep the similar system but up the tempo, and continue to stretch the opposition. This will build pressure which will allow our quality to pay off.

As fans we should also continually build pressure - high tempo crowd can help a high tempo game. However we will have be patient during games - how many times do the big teams win late on , purely because of the high tempo presuure they have created. Pateience will be neede as outr next 3 home games are Huddersfield, MK dons and brisol r possibly 3 best teams outside the big names
  • Three things struck me on saurday about our team;
    1. Bailey had a poor game (for him) and I think he looks like the injury he is, reportedly, carrying had an effect.
    2. Sam looked knackered from about fifteen minutes, he seemed to cut inside to avoid having to take anyone on, his injury looked to curtail his efforts as well.
    3. I have always hoped IM would eventually come good, but he had scored in his previous two appearances at the Valley so his confidence must be good, but Saturday I think I finally lost faith. He is never going to be a goalscorer, cheers Pards, he is big and strong but how many miskicks? It was the same Tuesday. Leon cannot get match fit quick enough.

Parky needs to give those that need it a rest.
  • my hope is that teams like Hudds, MK Dons and Bristol Rovers will come and try and play a bit themselves rather than just set out to stifle us like Oldham did which might play a bit more into our hands?
  • If Parky were to occasionally change his tactics, we could really have the best of both worlds.
The surprise element to completely negate the oppositions previous week of carefully planning their tactics to play against us.
In addition, a fresh Shelvey or Burton to come back into the team for the next game and be far more effective than of late.
In summary a proper 4-4-2 in the majority of home games, 4 5 1/ 4 4 11 in the majority of away games.

I think they will. To be fair to the other teams we have played Oldham are the only team who have come and parked the bus. The trio mentioned above all have quality in the final third and I can't see them coming to defend for 90 minutes. That isn't to say they won't be dogged, resolute and organised and it'll be up to us to impose ourselves on them. If we can.
