[cite]Posted By: DA9[/cite]Having played in a FIFA tournament for England (albeit under 18's) does that not make him illegible for any other country now anyway?
Nah playing for the youth sides doesnt count, i think Ryan Giggs played at schoolboy level for England
I would like to point out to the everso well informed people from the south london press that neither of Jonjo's grandparents are Irish, in fact neither of his great grandparents are Irish

Where do you think the quote came from? Seems strange they'd make the whole story up complete with quotes.
I dont know where it came from but i can assure you i know his grandparents and great gandparents and none of them are irish, i actually haven't read it but was having a laugh about it with my sister today at the game. Its funny to discover your parents are irish after all these years. Who were the quotes from do you know ?

Youngster keen to pursue England dream
By John Stanton
CHARLTON wonderkid Jonjo Shelvey has turned his back on a place at next year’s World Cup with the Republic of Ireland to pursue his dream of playing for England.
The Addicks ace has long been tipped as a future international and has always dreamed of wearing the Three Lions shirt.
But he was approached in the summer and asked whether he would declare his allegiance to Ireland, after FAI officials learned that the Romford-born star qualifies to play for them because he has an Irish grandfather.
And the indications were that he would have been fast-tracked into Giovanni Trapattoni’s senior squad, raising the possibility that the 17-year-old could have featured on world football’s biggest stage next June.
Ireland have enjoyed an encouraging qualifying campaign and could well be on their way to South Africa in the summer, though they may need to win a two-legged play-off tie to reach the finals.
“I had the chance to play for the Ireland first team but I want to play for England,” Shelvey told the South London Press.
For the full story and all the latest Charlton news, see Friday's South London Press.
No idea, apparently Jonjo told the SLP.
I don't think great grandparents comes into it anyway.
Does anyone know exactly how this all works? What happens if say one grandparent was born in England, but one of their parents (which would be the players great grandparents) were born in Ireland? Is the grandparent then English/Irish?
I remember something when he was playing in the charity cup for england school boys, but just seem to recall it was someone asking if he was irish due to the name. I'll check tomorrow and find out. Think they'd have to go back to his great great great great grandparents before they came across any irish. Its something i looked up years ago but cant really remember.
I think you qualify if any of your four grandparents were Irish or by residence; residence is why John Barnes could play for England and why Ryan Giggs could have done but he chose the land of his mother.
did anyone hear the five live commentary yesterday, i think it was steve claridge that gave jj a slagging. made out he was pants and all hype. said something like 'there is nothing in this performance to suggest he's going on to big things'. really hope jj makes it to england squad now. unfortunately unlike in previous times ala, powell, young, parker, etc he wont still be at charlton. FACT.

Read that in another thread.
He's not standing out at the moment, I can see why people think that, but I really think over the next few years, whether it's here or another club, we'll eventually see big improvements in his game, he'll be playing central midfield rather than behind the striker and taking more control of games, scoring more goals and taking more responsibility.
He's not a Rooney or Owen who came through at 16-18 and was already good enough for the Prem and England. He's a midfielder learning all the time and although he's not playing really well at the moment, he looks just as good as our other midfielders at 17. He's always in the team, got a few goals, plenty of assists and takes most of the set pieces. There are times he tries passes the better players would read, rather than make Jonjo look stupid. He's good all round for a 17 year old and doesn't look out of place most of the time.
Remember the way Parker suddenly improved? Look at Frank Lampard, how long was it until he was seen as one of the best central midfielders in the Prem and seen as world class (generally, I know everyone has different opinions on Lampard). How many midfielders come through at 17 and dominate games every week? He's decent in most areas but he's just the sort of player I can imagine improving all round, unlike a lot of players who just don't have that room to improve.
Quick look on wikipedia shows Lampard went out on loan to this division at 17, and didn't play regularly for West Ham until he was 19. Gerrard, who Jonjo is often compared to, didn't play regularly for Liverpool until he was 19. Parker was similar for us, broke through regularly at 20/21. Michael Carrick did the same, started playing at 19. Paul Scholes and David Beckham another two, broke through at 19/20. Gareth Barry broke through a bit earlier, around 18, but it's taken him 8-10 years before he's seen as a very good Prem midfielder and England player, rather than just a good Prem player. And even then, these are just total appearances, some of them will no doubt be sub appearances.
One difference with Jonjo is he's getting regular football in the lower leagues, while the above players I assume mainly played reserve football with the odd short term loan spell. If he keeps working hard, has the right attitude and doesn't think he's made it, he'll get stronger, fitter, read the game better and perform more consistently and we'll see more from him. Not saying he'll definitely play for England, but having a quick look at the careers of England midfielders shows most of them don't play Prem football every week until they're 19/20, and it's at least a couple of years, often more, before they're seen as top players and international quality. He's got a lot to do, but he's on his way to being a good Prem player and proving Steve Claridge wrong.

Didn't stop Tony Cascarino...
Also, one of the most treasured of all Irishmen won the world cup for you lot - Jack Charlton ;-)
Anyway Uncle... glad to hear it isn't true
he hasn't turned down the call to play for Ireland ;-)

Good decision JJ
He is welsh, with welsh parents. He played for England schools as he went to school in England and was not qualified to play for england.
Apart from the minor detail of being welsh.

is his real name Jonj O'Shelvey maybe?
