Steve bloody Claridge

edited October 2009 in General Charlton
Firstly - why is he a pundit when he is hopeless

Secondly - why is he on EVERY football related channel/program/radio show known to man at the moment!

Last night on R5 it was him and Mental Motson but Claridge is always piping up when other people talk and you hear him in the background waffling on!

If you want my licence payers money then get this gimp off my screen pronto

The email bit with that woman infuriates me! It just rings of "we need a woman to prove equal opportunities etc, what can we make one do?"

I wonder how many emails she gets from p*ssed up blokes asking her to get her baps out

Something you're trying to tell us Dave?

I actually don't mind Claridge, at least he seems to take a genuine interest in football in general instead of just watching the Premier League like the Lawrensons and Hansens of this world.

Is this some reference to what she bought at the bakers?

Ditto, i think he's ok and has a genuine interest in the lower leagues.
  • Funnily enough I was thinking something similar (to Swisdom, not Dave Mehmet). Steve Claridge sometimes does offer a bit of insight and is generally listenable/readable when he's discussing something he has researched - his scouting reports on up and coming young lower-league players in the Guardian were pretty good and even if you didn't like them at the very least didn't cover young players at Premiership teams who you probably already knew, but on R5 he suffers a bit from overkill in that he's expected to have an opinion about everything football related. R5 definitely need to have a revolving cast of characters to call on for their expertise rather than continually go to Claridge (as the ex-pro) and Motty (as the ex-commentator).
  • I agree Claridge is OK when talking about one of his ex clubs or a team he's seen a few times. He is awful when he has to comment on patterns in a game, unless it's obvious reacher tactics. But he is even worse when asked to give general oppinions on teams in season and their peaks and troughs. On those occassions he is full of platitudes and generalisms.

He keeps on banging about good players being able to hit the ground running, and systems not mattering to good players. Is that why Chelsea went shit in winter with Deco disappearing, but then Hiddink setting them up brilliantly along the inside chanels transforming an almost identical team but without Deco? The fact is the guy can not understand pragmatism, character and reliability: On the pitch he had all those but off his life is a mess without one thing responsibility, hence the teams he managed immediately lost cohesion and lacked responsibility/leadership. He just wouldn't understand say a player like Leighton Baines who is an excellent footballer, but lacks a bit of confidence which does not matter when he's in a robust system like the Toffee's have; Claridge would get the personnel right but turn up late or not bother with positional practice leaving it to the senior pros, creating an almighty mess in times of crisis.

They've pretty much nabbed the format from 'You're on Sky Sports', all-be-it with highlights of games.
Sky introduced the woman to read out the messages at the start of this year, & Claridge was a regular on that show, so it looks & feels very similar. Except for the Liverpool fans from London ringing up to say that Benitez has no clue, every 5 minutes.
  • Let us not forget that for all his faults, he did score an important goal in the last minute while playing for Leicester City.

Hence, he now has the freedom of the city of Charlton.

  • Cos he's Cheap
  • possibly because he's played for half the teams in the Football league.

i don't mind him ti be fair
  • Don't mind Claridge even though he lacks personality and makes some very obvious remarks! Can't stand the email part, like they are trying to make the show more interactive when at 1am all people want to see if football.
Also I reckon the woman on last week is a palace fan as she has talked about going to their games a couple of times this season
  • Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes. Good mate of mine, married to Ger Hughes of BBC London sports desk, and, indeed, a Palace fan.
