See that Briartore has resigned, so does this mean that Piquet was telling the truth and he was ordered to crash in the Singapore GP?

F1 lurches into yet another crisis!

UPDATE - BBC reports that Renault have admitted guilt over the Singapore incident.

  • Really shouldn't have sacked Piquet.

Saw yesterday that the BMW had been brought out and FIA had given them reserves status as the 14th team meaning if anyone dropped out they would take their place.

So I'm guessing Renault will be gone from F1
  • They should ban all involved for life!

Renault should be fined well in excess of the 50m that Mclaren were.
  • They reported the Radio traffic leading up to the crash & some of it was clearly in code for something. Very Sad that a team would even risk a drivers & spectators lives for a victory.
  • Briatore and symonds leaving technically shouldn't have an effect on the charge against the team because much like the mclaren espionage case last season, the team is held responsible by the FIA for the actions of the individuals it employs. By sacking them, the team is obviously hoping it will though.

Personally I can't see the team getting away with anything less than a ban of some sort, and what with Renault's finances as they are, and the bad press it's caused them, I think Renault will use it as an excuse to close the team.
  • In my book it is worse than the Mclaren affair.
Its just short of fixing the result of the race, besides the fact that motor racing is a dangerous sport they went and added a little more danger to all.
  • Totally agree that it is worse, but half the fun of formula 1 is the fact that it is so policiticised! There are different agendas between the two cases, I think that the FIA will be lenient for fear of Renault leaving the sport, and mclaren didn't have that in their favour.
  • God help the manager of QPR Briatore as well as 'advising ' on team selection will probably make himself team captain. The man's ego knows no limits.......

...and last season QPR still got more points than our supposedly professional and experienced managers...
  • I'm sure it will be a while before the full truth of what has happened at Renault, but if Briatore really was instrumental in the deliberate crash, how would that sit with the FA's "fit and proper" test for club chairmen?

You mean how would he fit in with pornographers, assorted shady businessmen, crooks, money launderers, abusers of human rights and murderers and Russian oligarchs etc?

I think he'd look a saint in that company.

  • What exactly does the fit and proper test involve then? Presumably the FA can't be privy to every tiny detail of a potential chairman's finances.

The BBC and other sources have been reporting that there is a specific clause in the 'fit and proper person' test that mentions being banned by the administration of another sport. But what with Briatore leaving Renault I doubt they'll bother punishing him individually, and even if they did I'm sure he'd challenge it in some court or another, which will stop any action from it on the football side.

The problem with this test is that offences must be proven as criminal even when for example, even though we know that sinawatra's human rights record is questionable at best, he was never convicted anyway for it and so couldn't be stopped.
