Reckon this might be somewhat historical (e.g total salaries paid out in 2009, to date), but even if it isn't we kept the likes of Shelvey, Racon and Bailey so if we're paying them a bit more to do so, it's worth it.
Where is Seth Plum to tell us that Charlton senior staff management have by far the largest wage bill in the Third Division? Maybe even bigger than any club in the Second Division.
A worry for me is that although "our" big earners are not likely to be pulling huge money perhaps 5 - 10 k per week in Bailey and Semedo. There will be plenty of Championship sides who covet them who would be willing to pay a fair amount more. Can you blame the players for thinking the grass might be greener especially if promotion is not forthcoming. A reality for all clubs I suppose.
Short of a complete fire sale of the nucleus of our 1st team, then players retained must have their existing contracts honoured.
All our Prem contracted players have now gone, with the exception of Lloyd Sam, on a 5-year contract from the Dowie era. We are left though with Pardew's early Championship signings, who came to Charlton because we offered a very decent package.
Some of those signings are the engine room of our side, so we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot if they were sold.
And we'd replace them with ...... ?
Free transfer/Bosman signings might not involve a cash sum paid to a player's previous club, but they still come with a price tag ..... players always receive a signing on fee, which can be quite substantial. That way they can be offered a smaller wage, and the difference made up by the signing-on fee lump sum.
Likewise, loan players are rarely free of cost. Oother than picking up all or part of the wage - often, there is an additional fee paid to the parent club.
Anyway, it can work out more economical over the season to keep existing players on a higher than normal contract for the division, than the cost of bringing in replacements on lower wages but with all the additional hidden costs involved.
Not so worried about our wage bill as we need promotion this year and this has to be a prioroty as oggy red said, if we do not then Bailey, Semedo, Racon,Sam etc will all probs leave and they are amognst highest earners and best players. Even if we do go up, i think we have a few key players out of contract anyway so our wage bill can be properly analysed then. Also heard Basey is on 4k a week which seems a lot for a 20 year old who can't really get near the first team
[cite]Posted By: cafcdan18[/cite]worringly so is Elliot plus possibly Sam, Semedo, Racon, Youga even Burton may be out of contract, there will be no one left!
So ....... vitally important we get it right this season.
The nucleus of this team can thrive in the Championship, if we get it right this season.
Semedo, Racon and Youga all have another year, contracts end 2011. First two signed 4 year deals, Youga signed a new 3 year contract just over a year ago.
Burton will most likely be out of contract because of his age. Hopefully Sam is the next to sign a new deal/an extension after Elliot and Shelvey did, as he's out of contract at the end of the season. Signed a 4 year deal when Dowie came in.
Yes most players only have 1 or 2 years left on their contracts, but that's how football is at the moment. The lower down the leagues you go, the more players on short term contracts. I doubt there are many League One and Two clubs handing out 3, 4 or 5 year contracts, ignoring Notts County and maybe Southampton because of the money they now have. Smaller clubs must go through this every year, when we signed Fleetwood wasn't he out of contract, but we paid a fee because of his age?

Did you know that Lloyd Sam was born in .......Leeds?
And he has an older brother, Andrew, also in football (or was?). He's mainly played in non-league (including Welling) and I think abroad (Iceland I think).

We have to ask ourselves the question 'would we be happier if we had a lower wage bill but had lost players of the calibre of e.g Bailey and Shelvey?'
I know what I think!
How much would that cost us in the long run? More than this year's wage bill, that's for sure.
