Mendonca and the "F-word"

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Clive Mendonca spat an expletive at a section of the crowd after scoring one of his goals in the 1998 play-off final.

Who was he aiming his expletive at? And why?

Comments

  • After his second goal he did go a bit mental I seem to remember, and it looked like it was just directed towards the Sunderland fans in general. No idea why.
  • thought the title meant he was on the new series with his family !!!

(no idea about the answer...but probably a Sunderland supporting relative?)
  • oooh.....

I thought it was a positive swear.....

    If that makes sense.....

    Tell me if im wrong
  • The board.

He could foresee a takeover was never going to happen.
  • The story was that some Mackem fans gave hm some grief for being a traitor to their cause. I've a feeling that there was a story from around then that someone in the crowd threatened him if he ever came back to Sunderland.

That's about right, the Sunderland fans (a couple of them) are suppossed to have done the finger across the throat thing. The guy whose penalty was saved (How can I forget his name) had the windows on his house smashed - they took our win badly !!!
  • That was Michael Gray - a born and bred Sunderland fan.

Of course! Thanks - Charlton Legend
  • Michael Gray certainly wasn't vilified after the Wembley penalty miss, far from it, it was reported in the Sunderland Echo that the SoL switchboard was actually jammed with fans support for him...

You might have got a few nutters who go over the top and making ridiculous threats but that's football all over...

And as for Super Clive, he returned to Sunderland a few days later and he was given a real sporting reception by Sunderland fans...

In fact he now lives in Sunderland and I talk to him now and then in the Roker Hotel...
  • tell him we all still worship the ground he walks on then won't you Redzed!

Has he turned into Alan Partridge?!
  • The beauty of that hotel is that it is equidistant between Sunderland and Durham...

Whereas, the downside is that it is equidistant between Sunderland and Durham
  • Cock piss mendonca

If the The Roker Hotel is in Sunderland and Durham is about 8 miles away, how can it be equidistant...?

the window smashing was in the press. Although that is no guarantee of truth.
  • Super Clive (to give him his correct title) was questioned in the media prior to the game, about maybe having "divided" loyalties. His response on scoring was there for all to see !
  • Too me and I guess many others...... Charlton's greatest player post war.
  • Love the second Mendonca goal for his ball control, but never tire of the build up to his 3rd - check out the Steve Brown tackle that starts the move.
  • All three were class, and all three different.

    It's an Alan Partridge joke.

"That" tackle by Stevie Brown (won't let you down) was pure class, I get goose-pimples just thinking about it
