Reserves Friendly

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Is this friendly arrangement really as good for players close to the First 11 and the subs as being in a league. I see the potential for cost savings but is the competition as good.

BTW can you sneek in andf watch at Sparrows Lane.

  • To be fair the competition in the reserve leagues themselves isn't always good. Last season we were in the same league as Lewes reserves, who were well below the standard, I saw us play Brighton reserves, who played a lot of u18 players.

The reserve leagues have problems themselves, because of the small size of the reserve leagues, they added a reserve cup last season. And like I said, the standard and number of games is different all the time. At least now we can get friendlies against the standard we want to play, when we want and how often we want.
  • Wolves and Spurs do it.

No bookings to count in league games

Don't have to field a side when we are short of players or fulfill fixtures we dont like

Can play trialists whenever we want to ie Holden and Abu Bakr played v Palace.

Can pick and choose who we play and what standard they are at. We have already had to say no to Fulham and Chelsea pre-season.

Depends how good you are at blagging it at the gate if you want to watch close up. Otherwise you can watch from the public football.
  • What Scoham said. What i'm not sure about is whether cards in these friendlies matter? Players who got red cards in reserve games used to miss league games.

No they don't as they are not "real" games.

Though you can play trialists in reserve league games, like we have in the past. Dickson and Dorian Smith are two of the very few that impressed then signed for us.

I think that's probably important to the club, the young players and players returning from injury getting thrashed by Chelsea isn't going to help them, same as them thrashing the likes of Lewes 7-0 doesn't benefit them much either.

So far the reserves have won 6-2 twice, lost 3-1 and 2-0, and I'd imagine we thought Palace would give us a closer game than they did.
  • I think you can only play trialists twice and have to get permission to do that in reserve league games.
