Sam Sodje - A man short on confidence

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Taken from Friday's SLP:

WHEN Sam Sodje re-joined Charlton last week, his return was greeted as a sign that the club will do whatever it takes to secure promotion from League One at the earliest possible opportunity.
The defender, a class act for Leeds last season and regarded as one of the best centre-backs at this level, had a loan spell with the Addicks under Alan Pardew during the 2007-08 campaign, and is held in high esteem by Addicks supporters.
Sodje brings with him a host of qualities, which will help boost a previously threadbare squad. He is seen as an ambitious signing.
And while many new additions might think they’d find it difficult to break into a team which has won six games in a row, Sodje, who exudes self-confidence, has no such concerns.
“My attitude will show through and sooner or later I will be in the team,” Sodje told the South London Press.
“I’ve told my team-mates that they must make sure they’re playing well or I will be in the side and, once I get in, I won’t come out again.”
To become a first-team regular, the 30-year-old will have to dislodge either Christian Dailly or Miguel Llera.
As a partnership, those two have looked increasingly impressive in recent weeks and have now conceded just one goal in 466 minutes of League One action.
Sodje, though, doesn’t see that being a problem.
“There are people in the team now who are doing well but it was the same when I came to the club before,” he said.
“Back then there were three top-quality centre-backs in Madjid Bougherra, Jon Fortune and Paddy McCarthy, but I still got in the side. It wasn’t a problem.
“I firmly believe in my ability. If I’m 100 per cent fit I’m confident I’ll be playing. I’ve got a lot to offer.
“I’ve got nothing to prove because the supporters know me and they know what I can do. The fans should remember me. This league is all about speed, power and experience, and I have all of those things."

  • I see Parky has shown his poor man management skills again and knocked any confidence Sodje might have had right out of him.
  • lol its good how much he wants to play, think he'll be waiting a little longer though
  • he's nearly as confident of his own ability as pardew is!!
  • Psuper Psychologist Parkinson has probably told Sodje to say all that to keep Llera and Dailly on their toes .......

    ;o)

    ........

Which is why we signed an injury prone player on a free transfer who had presumably received no better offers since his last contract expired a couple of months before.

I'm not sure though how any of this amounts to a player "short on confidence". If anything it sounds the opposite. We are taking a punt on Sodje and that he stays injury free, but most of all we've signed a player who has performed well enough at this level and above but one importantly who has the right character and personality to know that he's not just going to walk into the starting XI and stay there and will work hard for the team.

Shows he's got a sense of humour with the last one.
  • BFR, I thought the thread title was deliberately ironic.

    Unless it's just a typo ...... (!)

I think it's a case of whoosh for BFR Oggy!

Germans are renowned for having no sense of humour :-)
  • Just been called up by Nigeria according to official site (for Barnet and Oldham games)

  • Will this be our first Nigerian cap?

Good luck to Sam and will hopefully get him match fit but leaves us even shorter of cover.

    Did Ifejiagwa play for Nigeria?
  • Yes, but he didn't play for Charlton

means we'll probably have to play Llera and Dailly against Barnet when ideally you'd prefer to rest one to give Sodje a game.
  • Basey CB
  • ...and we'll lose him for the African CoN which lasts about 3 months in the new year
  • could be in trouble if Llera is suspended for the Oldham game and Sodje is off on international duty.

maximum for 1 month and even then you have to get to the final.

not a centre-back and neither is Youga.
  • No offence to Sodje but Nigeria must be a lot worse than i thought they were if a 3rd division centre back who has hardly played this season, is getting into their national squad.

  • If you've ever watched African football mate their level of defending can be abysmal. Rigobert Song anyone? Really was no better than a third tier defender. Just momentary morons like 'arry liked to waste a bit of cash on him, with no doubt some brown paper bags going round.

Remember watching Charlie Natmark playing for Boreham Wood against Welling just before the '90 World Cup when he did OK against Cannigia. Only difference to Sodje was that Natmark was quite a good all round defender.
  • My money is on our 1st loanee this season being a centre half
  • Sol Campbell anyone ?????
  • [cite]Posted By: Fanny Fanackapan[/cite]Sol Campbell anyone ?????

    £40,000 per week, anyone ????????

    (Sorry, Fanny .... couldn't resist!)

I'm glad of that because I can't pronounce his name let alone spell it!....;o)
  • saw his Range Rover Sport after the game, assume it was him as it had ODJ in the number plate and other numbers/letters (i forget what) so you could see it Sodje.

    :)

Ghana don't seem to mind about Chris Dickson...

Saw him driving in greenwich about three weeks back, recognised the number plate! A very nice car for a 3rd tier footballer

So what is the suggested acceptable amount I wonder?

    league 2 20-50k Audi
    League 1 50-70k Range Rover/Porsche
    Champs 70-150k Bentley/Ferrari
    Prem 150k+ Lambo
  • He bought the motor 3 years ago with his Premiership Reading signing on fee.

At least it passed it's M.O.T this year.
