If we win promotion

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Last season my Millwall supporting mate told me that he wanted them to lose the play off's, as he enjoyed them winning in Division 3, rather than losing more in Division 2. Also they would get involved in less trouble in Division 3. I couldn't really understand that. Now I see what he means.I think it's great winning every game. But if we made the play off's I couldn't want us to lose. Would anyone ?

Whilst the win win mentality and general feeling is great and it is wonderful to see how well the side is playing -for me it is slightly tempered by the feeling that if things had panned out differently we wouldn't and shouldn't even be here in the first place, still- that is based on if! The current side has restored a lot of pride in all things Charlton right now and I guess a thanks is in order to the team and the boss for that. I always feel that we should always aim to be at a higher level no matter what. I sincerely hope our stay in Division Three is up by the end of May and that we leave upwardly rather than downwardly. With careful tuning our current side would make a better fist of it in tier two than last season's "outfit". I think last year we bottomed out and now the only way is up and I am daring to feel a bit optimistic.
  • I undrstand his views and am loving our football, bujt we are Championship and thsat is where we should be anbd where we should be competing, not sure I want us to ever get back in the Prem though ... its poisonous
  • Seems a daft question to be frank.

Surely we should be asking this question regarding Divisions 1&2, not Divisions 2 & 3. And it is my belief that within 3 years we will.

Whatever we achieve in 2010 it can not be better than 2000, and there is no reason that we cannot repeat 2000 by 2015.
  • Promotion to the championship with a title winning squad full of self belief would be great.

Hopefully it is only a matter of time until the big money big sky clubs break away into some sort of perverse super league leaving the top domestic flight a lot more competitive and a lot less soulless.

Until then i cant see the appeal of being back in the prem with plastic fans, patronising observers and players just there for the dosh.

Just look at our history over the past 75 years ..... 6 or so years in the Third Division, around 70 in the top leagues.

We've had four separate periods in the top flight of English football: between 1936 and 1957; 1986 and 1990; 1998 and 1999, and 2000 to 2007.

So history points to us an established second tier club, with periods in the top flight.

That's our niche in football ....... so we should at least aim to be a yo-yo club between CCC and Prem, much like West Brom or Birmingham City. That way, we get exciting promotion campaigns with the chance to compete every so often in the Prem.

These days, that should be our true level, as shown by our past 25 years.

    Compare to Millwall.
  • If we don't go up, we'll lose at least some of our best players, and it could take a few years to get back up. Sooner the better for me if we want to keep this team together.

    Good point, Scoham.

We really need to do it this season, because the nucleus of this team could stay together and do themselves justice
    in the Championship.
  • If we don't get promoted you can expect several if not all of Elliott, Sam, Shelvey, Bailey, Racon and Semedo to leave. Don't go expecting decent like-for-like replacements - we'll be shopping for free transfers and non-league players, so the quality of the squad will go down and therefore so will the quality of the players on the pitch. Don't expect decent crowds either - the 16,400 we had yesterday will seem a decent gate in a year, so there'll be little money to invest in the future.

Stay where we are and we'll be going backwards, not staying still. Get promoted, attract bigger teams, get more fans in and build for success. I'd rather be watching Charlton be a small fish in a large pond, thatn being a big fish in a small pond.
  • Id like charlton to be playing like they are in the prem tbh, smashing the arsenals and the chelseas again and perhaps finally beating man u...
  • i that is total b0Llocks! why wud any supporter want to lose in the play off final??? does that mean they dont want to better themselves and just be a 3rd rate side forever, do not agree a normal football supporter wud think that

As for charlton win the league at LEAST Championship consistent team, maybe in few years wen better equipped then think about being a stable premiership side again cos thats where we want to be like before

    ...........

Did you have this conversation with him before or after the play-off Final?

Anyway given their poor form to date this season his theory doesn't seem to be standing up to the test of time. I think he may just have been making excuses for failure...

No he said it before the final and was quite sincere.
  • Millwall have found their level in the Third division.

Let's make sure it doesn't become ours !
  • slightly ironic that when a team gets relegated or fails to win promotion that "the best" players get to leave when in fact they werent necessarily good enough to stave off relegation or win promotion.

I think more importantly it is about building a team that has the right chemistry whether they are the best in the league or not...synergy i suppose... like when we first reach the prem via the playoffs.

From what ive seen this year (every home game and orient) i think we are more than capable of doing so and it is great to see a charlton team playing great football, and more importantly, with a collectiv self belief and unity that has been lacking perhaps since curbs left.
  • I can't understand someone not wanting their team to be playing at the highest level possible. I would love to see this team win the league and have a real go at the championship. And if by some miracle we do well enough to get back to the premiership then that's when the dilemmas start. I would find it hard to watch us trying to compete with the big guns and frankly think it would kill us. It's difficult but i want this to be the only season we spend down in div3 land.
