How Good Was That Second Goal?

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Approx 20 passes and a great finish.

I am 50 years old and have been coming since I was 7. Granted I haven't seen every game in that period but I cannot remember a classier goal. The Golden Goal that Killer scored against Hull was a peach but for sheer passing and moving involving so many players, that has to be the best I have ever seen from a teamwork perspective.

  • 15 actually. Deserved the goal at the end!
  • it was a truely great goal and Sam finished it superbly, the boys are confident and playing like it
  • There were 4 defenders closing-in when LS got the ball - brilliant !
  • Last weeks second goal and this weeks second IMO were absolute top draw.
I could watch them over and over...if I'd remembered to Sky+ the game.
  • I got a bit emotional to be honest...best bit of play leading to a goal in many a year

There are a couple of blokes in front of me, who are, shall we say, quite mature of age and they were shaking their heads in amazed disbelief, it was that good. One turned to me and said that he' d never seen a better goal for Charlton and I had to agree.
  • If there's a 'Goal of the Season' competition it's going to have to be a bloody marvellous effort to beat today's 2nd.
  • great move and pretty much total football in the build up, I haven't seen a better bit of football that actually finished up in the back of the net down there for many a year.
  • Blimey boys calm down wa a cracking goal

in cmetary Scott Minto was saying charlton have got to stop trying
to play like brentford and get the ball on the deck and pass it within
    a minute we'd scored

  • I couldn't go to the Valley today as I have an awful cold, so I was bound to my computer this afternoon watching live streams and listening to the action on the radio.

    All I know is this.

I watched us pass from the back through midfield where the movement off the ball was terrific. We worked as a complete unit, something I've rarely seen at the valley. Every time a player got the ball he looked up, found a player and passed, all the time looking to get it forward. The passing was just superb.

The touch Sam took to set himself up for the goal was so skilful, so accomplished, and the finish! He could have so easily bottled it but no, he hammered it into the net.

There were some great wonder goals last season, terrific individual efforts but todays goal was something else, a real team effort, an absolute pleasure to see.
  • Champagne football, my little bro was at the game (Arsenal supportor) and he was amazed at how good we were and that goal particualry he said was just like watchin Arsenal at their peak, which I take as a massive complement, we were just so composed on the ball always passing and moving and not getting frustrated when openings weren't apparent
  • Not just what we did, they had the ball for a bit too. It was the longest period of a ball in play I have seen for bloody years!!!
  • I was frustrated at times when Pardew was here, he'd talk about playing good football, it was apparently the only way he does things, but we were always hoofing it up to Iwelumo or whatever strikers were on at the time. Last season I saw we started to play decent football at times under Parky, but the way we've continued to do it every game has sometimes been surprising, but great to see, and a move like the one for the goal was better than anything we expected.

You can see we're playing with a lot of confidence now, the belief is there that we can play good football and win games. Bailey was taking players on, for a player that isn't a winger, and right footed playing on the left, that shows how confident he is at the moment. Sam has just scored three times in two games, he looks like he's a goal threat from midfield along with Bailey and Shelvey. I know it's a lower division, but he wouldn't have done that last season.

We obviously have talented players for this league, but Parkinson is getting the best out of them, something Pardew failed to get out of a single player in nearly 2 years. Who would have believed we'd win the first 6 games, or Sam & Burton's goal and assists records?

Long way to go, but another match in which we look organised, play like a team, have plenty of confidence and we're playing good football. We have several players capable of scoring or setting up a goal, making us unpredictable. There's not one player that can be marked out the game that stops us from playing. All things missing for the last few years. Many would have been happy to see us go back to just working hard and being hard to beat, but the football we're playing makes it even better. That goal showed just how good our football can be.
  • Well summed up, Scoham.
  • Glad some of you enjoyed the goal. Looking at a Leeds Forum, our 'friends in the north' weren't impressed:

" 2-0. Lloyd Sam. Half decent goal"

    :-)

    Hear, hear.

I don't care what bloody league we are in, if we keep winning it makes the whole effort of going to The Valley a far more pleasent experience than it has been for a good few years.
My first game today this season - last 2 home games I was at the respective Test Matches with my youngest. My eldest however has settled very nicely in the North Upper.and has been all season -Nutter.
  • sam's first touch took 3 defenders out of the game.

    it was beautiful.
  • Watched on Sky and commentators were syaing what a great goal and they kept shpwing it in replays. Been the best start to a season, more that I would have hoped for, football is being played the way it should be imho. Brentford were hard working and closing down quickly but they had no response to the pass and move of the second goal.........absolutey agree with everyone else on here..........the best goal I have seen by a Charlton side in the 49 years I been supporting them. Long may it continue!!!

  • Do any of you think Racon ment the 1-2 in the build up with the brentford player,

Watched it about a dozen times now what a great piece of football and a great turn with an exquisite finish
  • I think he did nla he kicked it at him hard enough for there to be little chance of controling the ball inevitably went straight back to his feet.

Agreed, I've been going for 40 years and I too can't remember a better goal.
  • wat a goal!! le arsenal would have been proud of that one, lovely cool finish by sam playing with such confidence at the mo

agreed havent seen a better charlton goal, been going for around 12 years aswell

your joking ... he did a peter reid ???

cant wait to see it agsin....
  • I originally posted yestaerday........ I thought our second goal was superb, one of the best team goals I have seen in many a time at Charlton.
If this was Arsenal all the pundits would be saying goal of the day.
On reflection having seen it on sky+.....As a team goal this was the best I can remember, The Bartlett goal was a great strike, and Mendonca's two hat tricks will always be special to me ( final and Southampton).
Helped take some of the 'gloom' away from supporting Charlton for the past few years, well done team.
  • Hansen and leonardo talk about it at the start of this clip (think they meant to say league one rather than world cup)

  • Thought Sam was off to Milan for a minute there Rodders!

    *Off on holibobs now bask*
  • It was brilliant certainly one of the best i have ever seen at the Valley in my 17 odd yars of going.
