Ever told an 'untruth' about the Charlton score?

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Reference on another thread to the 1-6 home defeat by Leeds in 2003 reminds me of a guilty moment.

My Dad was lying in hospital, terminally ill, and we went to visit him after the match. Although he was quite heavily sedated, and would eventually die four days later, he was bright enough to be aware that it was a match day.

"How did they get on, son? Leeds, wasn't it?"

Viduka's goals and Kewell's tormenting came flooding back to me. We knew how ill my Dad was and that he probably didn't have too long to go.

"Umm .... we won 2-0, Dad. Jason Euell and ....er .... an own goal."

"Good boys! I knew we'd beat 'em. Always disliked Leeds."

Sorry, Dad. You'd have done the same, though.

  • Nice touch i reckon i would have done the same
  • good man dave, just what he would've wanted to hear - no harm done
  • When I was about 8, my Dad was unable to take me to Charlton because of some other commitment. So, I went with another family. My Dad, being the pessimist he was, said that Charlton would lose as "Charlton were not good enough", so as a sort of one way bet I said that I should win an ice cream (I think) if Charlton won. He agreed. Charlton lost, of course, but when I met him I told him that Charlton won and bagged my ice cream. On Sunday morning, he found out the real score - I think I got away with it because he just told me how right he was about his prediction. I think the opponents were Sunderland.

Not told an untruth about a Charlton score but I keep telling my 8 year old that Charlton are going going to be taken over by David Beckham in an attempt to get him to come down the Valley with me.
  • as likely a story as any of the other rumours!
  • Yes - When we beat Hammers when Pardew was in charge, my mate is a Hammer, he could not get near a radio or TV, he txt me asking the score, I think we where 2up at the time, I hurriedly txt him 2up, he assumed that Hammers where 2up, cos I got a txt back giving it large??? So when we got our other goals I went with it and txt him 3up, 4up and was getting pelters from him, like how good Curbs was etc...
He found out about 7pm...I know this 'cos I got a text that just said, Wanker!
Best insult I have ever received!!!
  • My 3 year old daughter asks me daily "did Chowlton win?" and my response is invariably yes - her spending 2 hours in the pub tomorrow lunchtime should knock a bit of the enthusiasm out of her !
  • I took my Dad in his wheelchair to watch Leeds a short time before he died. That was his last game. We lost 1-0, but he told me he had enjoyed himself. I think he told me an "untruth" to cheer me up!
  • I'm not proud of this but when Palace reserves beat our first team in the league cup I told this simple Palace bloke in the Market Porter that we had done them three nil.
    Actually that was pretty funny.
  • I told my nephew that he was in for a treat for his birthday a couple of years ago. I told him I was going to take him to see a Premiership match. We got our tickets to the Valley, went to the shop and kitted him out in Charlton gear and then we lost 2-5 to Man. City. (Not much of a treat).

  • No, don't think I have but there have been times when people (especially Mrs.M) have thought I was fibbing , 4-2 Arsenal, 3-2 Liverpool, etc..
  • Last year I watched the Derby league match down the boozer which didn't please my wife very much as we were having friends and family round for a bit of a do. I promised her I'd be back as soon as the match finished but after meeting a few friends and sinking a few pints I forgot all about getting back early and when I got home quite late and slightly inebriated her indoors was really quite mad so I told her the match was on Setanta and I had to go all the way into town to watch it and that we had drew and had to play extra time and then penalties, my son chirped up with a 'I thought it was a league match.' I just gave him one of my 'Shut your mouth or you'll go to bed early looks' and nothing more was said. Fortunately my wife knows two things about football, nothing and bugger all, so I got away with it that time....
  • Told keith peacock southampton were losing during the sheff wed home game which we needed to win to avoid relegation and also needed
southampton to lose. Used to sit on two seats ( on the touchline) next to dug out. Sothampton of course won 2-0 that day, dont think it would have made a difference from memory as we were shit that day.
  • not about the score, but regularly exaggerated the away numbers back in the eighties and early nineties.

Find me anyone on here who hasn't yet people still somehow manage to guesstimate too many (never less!!)......
can't wait for the programme today to see the huge numbers we brought to tranmere another excuse to be wiped off the reasons for poor away followingswe never win away so not worth going

People in glass houses .............. How many aways do you do now each season on average ?
  • Not a deliberate example but a few years ago I went round telling loads of people that we beat chelsea at stamford bridge in the league cup. But it turns out we didn't. Apparently only the first 90 minutes counted and that unbeaten run stretched on and on.

as a previous away season ticket holder and someone who has been to EVERY game in a season and someone who has travelled to 60-70 different grounds following charlton over the years i feel i am in a position to comment on our piss poor away support
nowadays with family commitments my away appearances are minimal but just cos i don't go that often doen't entitle me not to comment does it ??
i'm comparing our poor numbers to other clubs and can't get my head around why it's so bad maybe you can tell me

I think the reason is that as a "family club" a high proportion of our support are in the same position as you and don't go for the same reason, which is understandable. I too had to go to less aways when my kids were younger.

It's just that it is tiresome when you trot out the same 2 topics on most posts for years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years and years ............... criticising our away support and you don't even do many yourself ................ the joke wore a bit thin 2 years ago.

Sorry, don't wish to be rude and no offence meant, just exhausted with the continual criticism :-)
