Charlton v Brentford - Pre-match poll, views etc

edited September 2009 in General Charlton
Sky are bringing their lovely HD cameras down to The Valley tomorrow for 12.15 KO, I can’t imagine that they are promoting it as a “Super Saturday Morning” or the like but all the same it is the first chance to show the entire footballing world our footballing credentials.

Charlton will be defending their 100% record in the league against a centre-backless Brentford team who are also unbeaten since being promoted from Division 4. With the only injury doubt for the Addicks being Frazer Richardson will we see the same team again? Will any of McKenzie, Holden or Sodje feature at all? Will the takeover happen on the pitch beforehand?

Your views and predictions here please.

  • We'll win but maybe not as easily as against Tranmere.

Looking forward to seeing Sam Wood. Tricky little winger/play maker who was at Bromley season before last. Starred for Brentford last year so will be interesting to see how he looks against a decent side.

Solly in for Richardson if not fit.

Mckenzie on the bench but otherwise unchanged.

No takeover announcement before the game.
  • Another win for the Addicks.....Maybe Solly in for Richardson if the latter is still carrying a knock. I dont think we will see Leon or Sam, but maybe they will give Holden a place on the bench to savour the atmosphere....its a huge step up from non league afterall. Im sticking my neck out at 4-1 with Racon getting amongst the goals.
  • agree with the above, expect a win but think it might be tight (2-1), mind you I thought we'd lose at Hartlepool and struggle at Tranmere so what do I know !!

expect the same side with Sodje on the bench, Parky said he's not fully fit but is naturally pretty fit so I'm sure he'd have no problem if called upon.

Jonjo to score and then smash his drive Happy Gilmore style into the Covered End
  • Our toughest one yet. Brentford have upped their budget quite considerably this summer, and i think have a chance of being a play-off contender. Believe they have a fair bit of pace, power and trickery going forward, so should be a real test for our defence. I keep expecting a slip up around the corner, but if you ignore the previous five wins, if you look at this one in isolation, then i think we should win. Will be interesting to see how Lloyd Sam carries forward what was the greatest performance of his career last week. Build on it, or return to inconsistency ?

Don't expect a takeover announcement, but i reckon some form of good news will emerge in the next 24 hours.

2-2 - Bailey and Sam for us, Weston to get one of theirs
  • could be our hardest game yet still think weve got to much for them 3-0 to the mighty addicks.
  • Wathcing on SSN I'm not sure if this has been brought up but IMO Andy Scott (Brentford boss) looks a hell of alot like Matty Holland.

Yeh anyway we'll win 2-0, Shelvey and Racon to score. They won't get near with a Charllton reject up front in Myles Weston.
  • Henry ,I played with Sammy Wood at Cray before he moved to Bromley, did you know he had a weeks trial at Charlton before he went to Brentford? A cracking little player also looking forward to seeing him tomorrow
  • Dan what do you know fella?

  • News of the takeover will be made by the end of next week. Fact.

Brentford's centre half not fit to play, so I expect them to play a defensive 5 man midfield and hope to score from set play or breakaway. If we do not score early it could be a bore.

Will their midfield hold out against ours? Doubtfull. A comfortable 2-0 win after one of their players gets sent off for two yellows
  • Assuming no early red cards or defensive injuries it'll be a big win tomorrow.

Nice week of rest for the starting XI so we'll be home and dry by half-time. Hopefully will see something of Holden and Mckenzie too.
  • If Charlie Macdonald was playing I'd be concerned, you know- the explayer syndrome etc, but we should nick it 2-1.

Did he? Knew he'd had a trial at Wolves but not us. I did once mention him to Pardew but there you go.

Good to see him doing well (not tomorrow hopefully) as always seemed keen and hard working. According to people at Bromley he always thought he could make it as a pro and so he has.

Any manager worth his salt will have done his homework on us.

He'll have noted that our midfield is both our attack and our defence - so expect him to flood the midfield, and attempt to close us down quickly, denying us time and space on the ball.

That could choke our passing game, negate our tactics - and as just about every opposing manager has commented in the recent past, get our crowd to turn against their own team.

But if we can get our noses in front, Brentford will be forced to come at us and take risks, leaving them vulnerable to our quick breaks.

Brentford are unbeaten so far, and the team spirit that got them promoted has carried them forward this season.
But they appear to be vulnerable at the back tomorrow, so it's in our own hands to make sure they are out-thought and out-fought.
  • I think our fitness in this league, as well as our ability is currently superior.

it is something which stands us in good stead in the last 20/30 mins of games and will prove so again tomorrow.
  • as usual Oggy, you write what I'm thinking....

at the game 2 morrow with sams family he had a trial at wolves before going to brentford never had a trial with us had interest from bristol city and coventry very good player likes to get forward maybe we should av a good look at him do with someone left back or left midfield he is versatile also local lad.

  • Toughest one yet and we will still do them 3-1 , Jonjo to get the first, they may pack their midfield but because Jonjo dont play midfield or as a striker teams are struggling to pick him up. They could try to man mark him but that would leave space for the rest of our midfield to take advantage of. I think a tight 1st 20 minutes then we'll score, they'll then open up a bit. We'll get 2 more and they will get one right near the end of the game
  • I think we'll win again and quite comfortably. Their excuses tomorrow will surround their lack of defenders and one of their novice defenders taking an early bath for a professional foul on a marauding Sam (who was about to shoot wide ;)), but nevertheless, we'll have the pen and it's Burton 1st scorer in a 3-1 win!

I had 2-0 and Llera 1st scorer in the last game with Bobbolder and our mate Stu, so hopefully will be right again and we'll continue our fine form. Can't wait to see them play again. Regardless of division, the buzz of watching a confident, footballing, winning side is a great one.

No takeover announcement tomorrow and now that we've managed to keep our midfield engine room and brought in a few newbies, I am a lot calmer all round in relation to any takeover. If one is to happen, I hope it does before the next window opens.
  • Agree teams are going to start packing the midfield against us but we've got the quality to counter this.

2-0 - JJ to win 6 Callaways for his longest drive.
  • Boogica, are you sure we never had a look at him as i was told he went to sparrows lane for a week with Ross Lover.Maybe misinformed but i was told this by Wrighty.

im good mates with his uncle and know his dad well they said charlton have never looked at him so i will take there word for it he was at cray and bromley and his old man ran cray reserves had at lot of interest from other clubs he may av trained at sparrows lane for a week but as far as im told nobody of note looked at him anyway still think we are gonna win 3-0.which would be great cos his uncle has drove me mad on the golf course about this game 4 ages.
  • hard fought 1-0 win, teams are going to try and make it difficult for us at the Valley from now on by puting men behind the ball.
  • Myles Weston, Charlie MacDonald and two ex trialists in Moses Ademola and Leon Legge. Ones surely going to score or at the very least really impress. Although I don't know which if any of them are likely to play.

We should win, but we're not going to win every game. Don't know enough about most of the teams in this league to predict when we'll slip up for the first time.

Great thing is we've kept our best players, and they can't mark all of them. Sam's a threat on the wing, Bailey scores goals, Shelvey scores and creates things, our full backs get forward, we'll get the odd goal from Racon and Burton. Even if teams mark all of them out of the game, we're still a threat from set pieces and we were all surprised when Semedo scored against Tranmere.

    Some form of good news?
  • Interesting game, and a bit of friction /rivalry Greg Dyke EX DG, and Michael Grade being ex bbc chairman and directors. In fact I wrote about this for my paper end of last season and did a cartoon with them 'handbagging' each other in dresses, Not at work today otherwise I would have posted it. I know that Dyke had a lot of time for Charlton and used to chat to him about football.I do remember suggesting to him that he should buy a stake in Charlton, but he thought two BBC, now ex on the board was one to many, and before he took up the Chairmanship at Brentford.

Should be a good match, I am going and think we will win, which is always a bad sign.......
  • Charlton win and an unchanged side...hopefully we'll see McKenzie on the bench and maybe Holden as well.

But Brentford will be our toughest match to date and I think there could be a bit of a buzz about this game.
  • 1-1. My prediction for every match so far. Hopefully means we will win again. If the lads play with the same confidence as last week I would back them to beat anyone but tomorrow is another day.....
