Perhaps Parky has been doing the exact opposite of what Pardew did.
Last year - start the season with no idea about defence.
This year - get several experienced defenders in.
Last year - get several loanees in and hack off the players who were kept out that starting XI as a consequence.
This year - no loanees.
Last year - drop players, play them out of position or get them to play in a manner that doesn't fit their skills.
This year - play a settled team, keep players in position and work out tactics and a system that fit the skills of those players.
Last year - make excuses galore to the media.
This year - praise players who play well.
Simple this management lark, just do the opposite of whatever Pardew did. Who needs FA coaching courses and badges?
He inherited a shambles but IMO with the players we had there is absolutely no way we should have been relegated.
What's done is done though and he's worked miracles this year so I'm totally behind him: there isn't anyone else that would be better in this situation than him right now. His signings with 0 money have been spot on and I just hope he can go on to build something great for us again. If only Pardew had done what Parky is doing now building a team instead of splashing cash and throwing a different 11 players on the field each week.
I see what everyone above is saying and i support Charlton through and through, but if the team we had nod had been 0 - 5 instead of 5 - 0 we would all be calling for his head, i support parky cause we have to, have to support the manager through and through, i hope that the progress we have made keeps up but i am still not sold, if our luck and skill hold we will make it up to the championship no problem, but do we all honestly think he is the answer long term? Answer me that, do you want PP to see us through the championship? or is he jus tthe flavour of the month because he has strung a few results together? i hope he is the answer but i do not feel he is, i see us getting a play off place and loosing out :( i hope i am wrong and that we get an automatically promation place but i dont see that he has it, and being as we dont have the cash and with the bloody transfer saga that will surpass the rest of my life, were not going to have the cash to find better, i miss premeiership football, make me sad to think of the better day, im just rambling now, all the best for us,
Very thoughtful post Oggy. I saw things last season, in the last ten games, which gave me grounds for optimism. What I like are two things. The team spirit and the passing game.
I was extremely critical of the inability of our team last season to pass the ball around. Indeed teams like Swansea and Donnie completely outplayed us, passing and moving the ball around. This has changed and great credit must go to Parky for that. As you say, the blend of experience and youth is great.
Take Burton for a second. When we signed him I was a sceptic. I couldn't see what he brought to the table. Parky clearly did, and I am now totally won over by Burton who's close control, movement and vision has produced openings for others, like his back-heal for Semedo's goal on Saturday, and his winning goal against the Os.
I must admit was not a fan of Parky, but everything he has done since the Summer has gradually won me round. He seems to have sorted out the defence, got the team playing with confidence & apparently the team spirit is better than it ever was under a certain Mr Pardew. He has spent virtually nothing as well. What with the Turner transfer netting us a cool £1M, the Takeover but a few days away, & our start to the season, I am getting the feeling that things are finally turning for the better for our Club at last.
Prob all been said by others on here but you could see clear signs at the end of last season that we had become much harder to beat but we could not then win games for a variety of reasons. Wycombe was a huge game to hold on to and we did and we seem to have gone from strength to strength since then. Parky has got the team organised confident and they are in the right positions for the team as it stands. Also playing some neat football. On a tiny budget. What more could you ask for? It's been brilliant.
[cite]Posted By: Ketman[/cite]the Takeover but a few days away,
Lets hope so but not getting my hopes up.
I like Parky, always have. He is a decent, honest and extreamely hard working guy. The amount of games he goes to has to be seen to be believed and all while his family lives up north.
He was never Pardew's lap dog or yes man but more importantly he thinks differently about the game.
I have said before he is not, IMHO, an impact manager. He builds teams and squads over time and that is what he is doing now. He has a good eye for players who maybe don't thrive elsewhere such as Iwelumo and Turner.
I think he was fortunate to keep the job after his trial period was up and even more so when the season ended. How much of that was necessity, the board seeing what some saw ie the small improvements made or new owners wanting to stick with him we will never know.
Regardless stability is a good thing and something we have not had for a while. I think that stability is as much a factor as anything else. Same manager, same team, same tactics.
With Breaker he has also started to build his own back room team. Oggy coined the term Parkinsella and I don't think the fact the Kins is still here should be overlooked either.
But, but, but......
It is only five games. Injuries, suspensions, runs of bad form and bad luck plus better opponents are all waiting around the corner. We are much better set up to deal with those now but they could still impact.
Just as I didn't think Parky was the mindless idiot with no man management or tactical skills that some thought he was I don't think he has turned into Arsene Ferguson over night either. He is a good young manager still learning his trade and one in the mould of Lennie and Curbs. If he is that good will only be seen over months and years, not five games. He came straight from playing to the Colchester job. I think his time as Pardew's number 2 has been the important apprenticeship that he never had before and he has learnt a lot from it.
The same goes for the players. They were never the brain dead, couldn't give a toss, talentless losers that we were so often told they were last year and they are not world beaters now. They are mostly decent, hard working, honest pros with some young gems and a few wise heads. The difference is the confidence, stability and clear direction they are getting from their coaches and that we are in a lower division do not forget. They will make mistakes and have bad games just like all players do.
The blame is now being shifted away from the current squad to those that left but Hudson is top of the league with Cardiff and Ambrose is scoring for Palace. They are still the same limited players they were before but maybe they too are better off and more confident in a regime that suits them and where they know their job.
If Parky can cope with the Championship or not is hopefully a question that he will be able to start answering in 11 months time. I will worry about it then.
I dont think it was a case of people not liking Parky or didnt think he was up to the job, it was a case that most people wanted to see a ' a clean sweep' of the club so the disaster that we witnessed from the two regims before which parky was part of was left behind. By putting parky in charge nothing seemed to change/happen straight away which was differant from the last two mangers. I think it was mainly due to frustrastion as we could only see the club going down. Now given time but no hard money, Parky, so far looks to be geeting his own team together where us fans have faith in the team which has been lacking over the last few years.
New chant for saturday - to the tune of that ' champions league your having a laugh' (cant remember the real name for the song)
Parky out .. but we was wrong we are right behind you .. so lead us on
To be repeated several times untill we get an acknowledgment/wave from him.
In terms of judging him on results, last season we got relegated, and this season we're doing brilliantly....lets hope we get a good result against Brentford huh?
Henry I agree with much of that. You are right to strike a balanced view. I never thought last season we had a bunch of muppets with no talent, merely they were playing like muppets. I was fully of the view, despite the unbalanced nature of the squad, that we had a strong enough squad to challenge. That we didn't is down to many factors and I think Oggy hit the nail on the head in his excellent first post contrasting Pardews approach to that of Parky
I believe there were signs of improvement last season even if the results didn't turn enough. I too feel that Parky is a very lucky chap to have survived to get to this point but he has grasped his opportunity and started to build a team during a very shaky, uncertain period for the club off the pitch and that is to be commended. Parky has also had the benefit of working with a smaller squad which helps to narrow down the formational and tactical options.
Confidence is high at the moment that is one of the key aspects to the all around improvement we are seeing. That started to happen at the end of last season and has carried on. I always thought that stopping the rot was the first thing that was needed, so that we became harder to beat. That happened last season but took somewhile. The next thing was to start winning again and that also began to happen last season. I felt the key to success this season would be to keep the nucleus of the midfield and find some defenders good enough to function well in tier 3 and thus far Parky has ticked all my boxes.
