A whole new experience to see a team that ooze confidence and class - and really play like a cohesive unit. They encouraged each other and communicated well. Quite simply, each individual on our team just looked better than the opposition. They were winning all the tackles (even the youngsters), dribbling past players, using little flicks and some great passing to pose a constant threat. We have some serious talent in our team and it is now becoming apparent because they have the confidence to show it. They all worked very hard, not least players like Burton who kept going and still had the strength and skill to make the opposition defenders look daft. Tactically, the approach was spot on and our midfield just took control and blew them away. Some Tranmere fans after the game were saying that we looked a class apart.
Some great support today (and some really funny moments - my scouse mate was very impressed) and it was brilliant to see the team enjoying themselves at the end and cheering the fans. I know Tranmere weren't that good and sterner tests await, but the fact is we made them look bad. Parky even got some chants of support today...
We should all enjoy this, because everyone at the club is playing a blinder at the moment - team, management and fans. It's great to have that winning feeling again - COYR!
Agree with Chaz, great game from a confident team who know how to play together. Tranmere weren't much good but that takes nothing away from another great team performance. Tuna replaced JJ towards the end and could have scored but still showed that he will be a handfull for the future. Youga was better, Semedo was replaced towards the end.
What more can I say four nil away from home with a team playing flowing passing football.
I won't pinch myself as I might wake up!

Just back from Prenton Park and my first chance to see the boys this season. Respects to the fans who travelled all the way up and mow enjoying the journey back! They really do play a big part in the teams success. You can see there is a great bond developing and the interaction was great to see. Big smiles and applause for the fans from the players at the end.
What can I say about the game. Great performance to a man. Frustrating start. So much possession at the start. Great inter changes but nothing happening in the box. Once the first one went in though we were totally in control. To be fair to Tranmere they tried to play football but we were just too strong and full of confidence. Midfield were superb. Couple of hary moments from Miguel. Boy can he be clumsy! But a rock at the back really committed. Elliott also impressed. Didn't have a lot to do but really confident in all he did. Bailey played a true captains part. We were always first to the ball. But MOM to Lloyd Sam. Two great goals and so close to a hat-trick.
Plenty of singing from the terraces and taunting of the poorTranmere support
[cite]Posted By: Off IT[/cite]I'm reasonably happy with a 4-0 away win. Still think it might be a different story when we start playing teams above us in the league though. And Tranmere are rubbish. And we should've scored a lot more.
Fixture Type: Coca-Cola League One Venue: Away Match Date: Sat 29 Aug 2009 Attendance: 5417 Date: Sat 29 Aug 2009. Matt Wright reports from Prenton Park New record as Addicks - and Sam - soar high Lloyd Sam scored two headed goals as a rampant Charlton dismantled Tranmere Rovers 4-0 on Saturday to set a new club record and remain top of League One.
The Addicks' five successive league wins is the best start to a season in the club's history.
And the scoreline even flattered the hosts, with Jose Semedo's first goal for the club and a fortunate effort from Nicky Bailey the proverbial icing on the cake.
It was a performance to delight the travelling fans at Prenton Park, with the Addicks looking a class above their opponents.
Clearly superior in midfield, where Sam was a constant thorn in Tranmere's side, the gulf was evident all over the pitch. And although Leeds United also won the same day to maintain their own 100 per cent start to the season, it has certainly been an August to remember for manager Phil Parkinson and his men.
Lloyd Sam celebrates opening the scoring at Prenton ParkThis was a side, remember, that was relegated rock bottom of the Championship last season. But Parkinson has instilled a spirit and quality within the ranks that certainly looks likely to result in a sustained promotion challenge.
Sam led the way thoughout, whether it was on the deck as he tormented the home defence, or in the air, where he scored two unlikely headers to net his first goals for the club since January 2008.
But there was rarely a foot out of place across the pitch as the Addicks delivered a consummate away display that barely allowed Tranmere a kick.
Semedo destroyed any attacking impetus that Tranmere attempted, and provided the foundation for Charlton's flair players to exel. That they did, but Parkinson will have been just as pleased after the final whistle by the concentraton shown in defence at keeping a clean sheet.
The match started with Charlton unchanged for the fifth match in a row after Semedo was passed fit after missing training on Thursday with a minor hamstring strain.
Rob Elliot lined up in goal behind a back four of Frazer Richardson, Kelly Youga, Miguel Llera and Christian Dailly.
Semedo continued his blossoming partnership with Therry Racon in central midfield, flanked by Bailey and Sam, and Jonjo Shelvey just behind Deon Burton.
The only change on the bench was the inclusion of Grant Basey instead of Stuart Fleetwood, while Tranmere made two changes from their midweek 1-0 Carling Cup defeat to Bolton Wanderers.
Ian Thomas-Moore recovered from his groin injury while manager Barnes welcomed back on-loan Blackburn Rovers defender Gavin Gunning, who was cup-tied in midweek.
Charlton started brightly, some neat and tidy passing and movement pushing Tranmere back towards their own goal.
But Rovers' first period of possession ended in a yellow card for Youga after just four minutes when he was slightly late on Chris Shuker. Thankfully, John Welsh's free-kick was well short and cleared by Bailey.
The first clear-cut chance came courtesy of a flowing move that stemmed from a short free-kick by Dailly to Richardson that saw Sam and Burton link up nicely to tee up Shelvey on the edge of the area.
The assistant referee signalled a foul on Sam, but referee Paul Tierney, who was a late replacement for the match, waved play on, and the teenager twisted away from his marker to produce a stinging drive that required a great save from Tranmere custodian Luke Daniels.
Dailly went close after 12 minutes when he peeled away from his marker to meet a corner at the near post, and then Burton again tested Daniels a minute later; the goalkeeper equal to his rasping left-footed effort to tip it over the crossbar.
Bailey required treatment after 17 minutes following a stern challenge from Shaleum Logan that earned the right-back a booking. But the midfielder was fine to continue and it was only a brief interruption in Charlton's forward forays as the visitors continued to dictate play.
It was therefore no surprise when the only goal arrived - although the nature of the deadlock breaker was perhaps a bit more unexpected.
A rare Rovers excursion into Charlton territory was broken down and the Addicks swiftly shifted the ball through midfield, with Racon nimbly finding Shelvey down the left flank.
A shimmy of the hips saw one defender completely fooled and despite the pace of the counter-attack, Shelvey took the time to pick out the only Charlton player inside the area with a deep cross.
Sam soars highest with what is becoming a trademark header to break the deadlockThat that player was winger Sam, not exactly noted for his heading ability, momentarily caused concern. But the club's current longest-serving player rose impressively and directed a firm header back across the goal into the bottom corner in a manner that was reminiscent of Alan Shearer.
A reminder that the Addicks had to concentrate came from the following kick-off, when Llera calmly held up the advancing Thomas-Moore while help arrived; the Spaniard ultimately blocking the shot himself.
And then, just two minutes later, it was 2-0.
Charlton have had a happy knack of scoring twice in quick succession this season - notably against Wycombe Wanderers and Hartlepool United - and the trend continued at Prenton Park.
This time there was the unlikely sight of Semedo bearing down on goal following a sublime Burton back-heel inside the centre-circle, and the Portuguese showed wonderful composure, under pressure from three recovering defenders, to steer a low shot past Daniels.
The damage done, Charlton were subsequently largely content to deny their opponents possession, although Bailey dragged a long-range effort just wide.
At the other end, Elliot remained relatively untroubled; his job just to collect the occasional cross or clear a back-pass. And with Charlton's midfield well on top, it became a matter of waiting for the next scoring opportunity.
This time Bailey was at the hub of the attack, nutmegging Logan and then cutting what looked to be a perfect cross back to Racon, who was waiting near the penalty spot.
Unfortunately, the merest touch from a defender diverted the ball from its path, leaving Racon beating the ground in frustration. But Tranmere's resulting attack also demonstrated the greater resilience and organisation about the Addicks this term.
Perhaps before, Charlton might have been exposed with Racon unable to recover and Dailly also exposed and out of position. So who was there, tracking back and responsibly filling in at centre-back? None other than 17-year-old Shelvey.
The half came to a close with Tranmere's first attack of note, when Moore's flick from Alan Mahon was straight at Elliot.
But after making two changes at the break, including the introduction of Michael Ricketts, Tranmere looked a bit more at the races after their orange quarters.
Within two minutes of the restart, John Welsh had flashed a well-hit left-footed volley narrowly wide of Elliot's post following a good run down the left and cross by Ricketts, and it served as a reminder that the game wasn't over.
Sixty seconds later, it was. This time Youga advanced down the left and provided the deep cross, and this time it was slightly less of a shock to see Sam pounce with what we can probably start now calling a 'trademark header' at the far post.
There was an injury scare soon afterwards when Llera was pole-axed by a flailing aim from Terry Gornell, although it looked accidental from the Rovers striker, who picked up a caution for his efforts.
But there was no respite for Tranmere's defence, and from Sam in particular, who was teasing and tormenting Cresswell and his colleagues.
Receiving constant service from Racon, Shelvey and Semedo, the winger was granted the freedom of Prenton Park to twist and trick his way forward, and one such mazy dribble almost produced a goal for Burton, his header just drifting wide.
The Tranmere goal would not stay intact for long, although there was element of good fortune about the fourth goal from Bailey. Shelvey did his best to reach the skipper's cross and ended up confusing Daniels, who was unable to prevent the ball creeping in the far corner.
As the home crowd made their dissatisfaction abundantly clear to their manager, the referee took centre stage, first - correctly - refusing to issue Llera with a second yellow when he bundled Thomas-Moore off the ball, and then refusing Youga a penalty when the ball had become tangled up slightly in the full-back's feet amid several tackles.
Ian Goodison headed just over as the match entered the 20 minutes and Matthew Spring replaced Semedo, whose sterling shift was fully appreciated by the travelling faithful as he left the field.
There was still time for McLaren to clear a header from Llera off the line and substitute Tamer Tuna also threatened in the closing stages.
But while Gareth Edds came close to converting a consolation just before the final whistle, anything other than a 4-0 scoreline - or more - would have been a disservice to the visiting team.
Echo what everybody else says, as long as we keep our midfield we will go up. Went to the Hartlepool game as well ( exiled up here), we are definitely a class above most of the teams in this league, but all our matches have been against teams from the lower half of the table, the real test will be against Leeds and I think Norwich are coming good. Having said that if they can beat us they must be really outstanding. Isn't it wonderful to watch a winning confident proper footballing side who pass the ball instead of lumping it (memories of Mr Iwelumo). After witnessing the disaster that was Hillsborough last season, I feel that I have my team back.
Wasn't there but any time you win 5 league games in a row it's superb. I don't care about what people are saying about the standard of opposition, i think the way we were playing last season many of these teams would have beaten us and Parky deserves a bloody big pat on the back for the way he's lifted the team and indeed the whole Club from the gloom that has been shrouding the Valley for the past few seasons. Ideally he deserves to be backed with the signing of a few players that he wants but that would just be the cream on top. COYR!
Well what is there to say after a stunning 4-0 away victory other than in this case sublime. Every player came out with credit, football is a random game of events and slip ups occur but these were few and far between. Are we very good or Tranmere poor, I believe it is the former. And Parkinson derserves a lot of the credit. Done the simple things, settled side, no loans, instills confidence and belief in his players, they play to a system which they believe in. He has sorted out our defence with three very adequate signings in Llera, Richardson and Dailly, they -play talk and work as a unit. Our midfield of Bailey ( interchange with Youga excellent), Racon, Semedo and Sam is very classy today miles better than the opposition. Burton and Shelvey worked their socks off up front, holding the ball up bringing the midfield on, taking on their defence. What particulalry impressed me again today was our ability to keep possession, make the opposition work hard to get the ball, frustrate them, tire them out and demoralise them. When we didn't have the ball we harried closed down space. we don't waste the ball too much either no hoofing out of defence. Couldn't give a to55 how poor Tranmere might be, we made them poor by our superiority which was all too plain to see in the first 20 mins. Only 2 days to go, hopefully we can keep this 17 together they won as a team and celebrated at the end as one as well. we have our Charlton back and a big hand to Parky, he has got rid of the big egos, the dross and instilled a belief which is a pleasure to watch, long may it continue especially against Pardew MOTM Lloyd Sam
Ball retention is commonly mentioned. Such a simple thing to do but one of the fundamentals we were previously lacking!!
He's got players playing to their strengths such as ;
Semedo - break the play and knock it simple
Jonjo - express yourself
Therry - express yourself
Deon - hold it up and use your experience
Lloyd - terrorise them - you can rule this league
Fair play to Parky and the team. It's not rocket science but it's been missing for too long - and the all too evident team spirit is fantastic to see
[quote][cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite][quote][cite]Posted By: A-R-T-H-U-R[/cite]There`s no diguising it - we have reached PP`s level.[/quote]
Why's it always we've found our/ his level? maybe we have finally turned the dressing room maybe he's a good manager maybe this is a good team?[/quote]
That's my view Dazzler Parky has worked wonders given the squad and situation he inherited. Yes he was part of the set up that got us relegated, but so was Kinsella. He is still there as we know and been a big part of the transformation too. Maybe Tim Breaker has been the missing part of the jigsaw
Quality performance today, we'll be too good for many teams in this league if we can maintain our current squad, self belief , team spirit and will to win every ball and then play excellent possesion football. We have a number of players in the team who can create something in the final third and a solid looking back four and a system that seems to suit a very settled side. Phil Parkinson deserves all the plaudits that are starting to come his way and I really believe that he'll win over many more as his team develop. Elliot had a really enjoyable day watching the game like the rest of us ! but when he was called upon to collect an attempt on goal or take a goal kick, you can see that he is now a very confident and capable goalkeeper.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Frazer Richardson for providing me with my first header from the terraces !
On a personal note, I would like to thank Frazer Richardson for providing me with my first header from the terraces !
And a quality header it was too especially as you were only 10 yards along the same row from me, and with headphones in too! Headache yet, it was a bit of a strike?
Yep, I echo all thats been said, so good to see a charlton team knock the ball around so comfortably, There was space in the middle of the park for Semedo and Racon to work well together, they tousled to get possesion then calmly made some killer passes. There was also a lot of grit, charlton winning most of the 50 /50 balls. Llera seemed to become the villain for the home crowd which at least gave them something to shout about. I thought Youga worked hard and linked up down the wing well. Burton grafted and this work gave more space for our attacking midfield. Elliot collected the few crosses he did have to deal with well. Jonjo showed some real class but was finding the slippery surface tricky and ended up on his arse quite a bit, Both him and Dion doing tons of running and getting to the ball when another day it would be a lost cause. His break and cross for the 1st goal was brilliant. Sam for me was MOM, but what was more pleasing was that often there were three charlton players in dangerous positions in the box waiting for the cross. Good fun was had by all, I think we all found it a bit surreal supporting a team that was winning 4 - 0 so much so that some started chanting 'Tranmere Rovers' towards the end !
Tuna looked very eager and quick, it would be good to see him get a longer swim out ( feed the fish and he will score !)
Champagne moment 'No 1 in South Londons' header, pure class and questionable bravery to head a ball coming at you at such a speed !

It was a great header no.1. I was about five seats down from you. I was the one that nicked out to get a drink early doors and missed our first and second goals!
