Opinions On Greenwich University, Would Appreciate Help

After failing to get into Leeds Uni I have been offered a place at Greenwich uni to do law. Now from what I have seen it looks nice but does anyone know more about the place, perhaps studied there. Do you reckon I should take what I have or search for something else.

Now I would also have the great opportunity of being next door to the Valley and would certainly get a season ticket, but thats not important I just would really appreciate any help.

  • I suppose it comes down to personal motivation and what you want to do. Greenwich will no doubt have a similar course but it's a pretty poor uni. If you have the drive it won't matter loads but if you can get into Leeds in any way, whether that be a year out, your peers will be of a much higher quality. It always helps to have intelligent, motivated mates just gives you that extra spur without you realising.

Plus Leeds is a great university city. Still if you can't get a job and do resits might be an idea to go to Greenwich.
  • My daughter got her degree at Greenwich if you are local and do not need the campus it should be o k also I know somebody who got their masters there and had no complaints
  • I got my Master's at Greenwich as it was suitable for me geographically. OK course, some excellent lecturers among not necessarily poor but very amateurish others. But the quality of student in the main is exceedingly poor. Doesn't make much difference to you postgrad but a real difference to you undergrad imo.
  • I studied there back in the dark ages when it was called Thames Poly.

In those days they had an excellent Law department but that was many years ago!

You probably need to consider exactly what you want from your university years. In other words is it just the academic and career side that is important or are you looking at the whole experience of gaining independence by living away from home as well as studying?

One observation I would make is that Law can be a snobby profession in that employers often look for qualifications from the "right" institution. In that respect Greenwich might go against you. However if you do your LPC elsewhere you might negate that.
  • No I have been speaking to the Chief Inspector of the Police and he suggests I apply to become a Special Constable so that I can be sponsored through uni and travel is free around London. This is due to the fact that they are recruiting for 2012. This will give me a distinct advantage to entering the police which is what I want to do, not a popular decision to many I know but it has always appealed to me.

Which particular uni may not be such an important factor in the police so it is down to your personal preferences probably.

A degree will allow you down the accelerated Bramshill route I would have thought.

I know a lad who got a law degree and took a year out and will do his LPG this year, he applied to be a special constable and was turned down as he had outstanding railway ticket fines.
  • I've got a lot of history with Greenwich both as a student and staff. Not as bad as they are being portrayed here but the professional snobbery would be a problem career wise.

Trying to be neutral and give good advice why not have a look at the times good university guide. In the 2010 league table Greenwich are 75th whilst Leeds are 33rd, for law degrees. Why not have a look at the Uni's inbetween the two.
  • Put it this way, greenich uni has been in the bottom five worst uni's for three years running...
  • If he's around, Stu of SE7/HU6 is your man... he's currently doing law at Hull, which is apparently one of the best in the land for law...

  • If you do that SE7, go in for the police, as Len said the uni you go to will not be such an important factor. Indeed I could see the reasoning that doing it down here and being a special in London would be much more advantageous. As I said I'd doubt if the course differs massively from Greenwich to Leeds. If you're motivated you'll get a similar skillset.
  • If you are going through clearing for a Uni place, why not keep your options open for a little longer.

I've no idea about the relative strengths/weaknesses of Greenwich Uni, but often employers will overlook you going to a lesser Uni if the course/department you are studying is highly regarded. Therefore your concern should be about how good and how well regarded their law course is. Try googling it and see what you can find...

A case in point - several years ago a friend went to Preston Poly purely because they had an excellent graphics design course, he graduated with several good offers.
  • Just starting my 3rd year at Greenwich doing computer science which is ranked somewhere in the 50s out of 100 i think, so it's not all bad.Alot of people drop out in the 1st year which probably doesn't help them in the rankings. From what i hear about law though you need to go to a top uni, so maybe look elsewhere.
  • I don't know personally but when talking about university options with a head of year a few months back, she said that Greenwich University should not even be considered and is a poor option for further education. Not sure if her opinion is particually valid but I'd just thought I'd say.
  • Hey SE7, I'd certainly look into greenwich a bit more before accepting a place, as others have said if you intend to go into law as a profession where your degree is from is VERY important. Have a look on a few of the university grading lists, the guardian run a good one, although you'll want to look over the last few years and get an average, rather than just looking at one year.

If you need any more help give me a shout (a whisper is probably best as I rarely get on here due to having no internet atm)
  • From the complete university guide* re Law.
I am not surprised by the listings seems much like it was in 1970 when I went through UCCA.
Law is a profession that IMO still has a class structure, unless you want to work at the local law centre My brother works in this field and his daughter was offered a place at Cambridge but turned it down because of the snobbery at the interview.

Just been working with a young lady at work, doing work experience, bright, friendly, sociable young woman, great communicator and she goes to St Andrew's , we have had others from Loughborough and Warwick and Nottingham, all A1.

The one candidate from Kings College Cambridge was late, not particularly eager to learn, and went awol for three days. I guess it all comes down to the individual. Good luck anyway ...
