Addicks second string lose to Arsenal

edited August 2009 in General Charlton
I haven't seen any mention of this on here but does anyone know who the trialist for us was??

Charlton's reserves were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Gunners' London Colney training ground on Wednesday afternoon.

Development coach Damien Matthew was able to name some well-known faces in his side, with Darren Randolph, Matt Spring and Stuart Fleetwood - all unused substitutes in Charlton's 2-1 win at Leyton Orient on Tuesday night - starting.
Chris Solly, who stepped off the bench with a couple of minutes remaining at Brisbane Road, took his place at right-back and there were also appearances for Grant Basey, Alex Stavrinou, Yado Mambo and Chris Dickson, while substitutes Tamer Tuna and Jack Clark were introduced late on.
Neither side created too many clear-cut chances in the first half, with Charlton being limited to shots from distance.
But, with the clock ticking down to half-time, it was Arsenal who made the breakthrough from the penalty spot. Yado Mambo had been caught in possession and in trying to win back the ball, a Charlton trialist fouled an Arsenal player in the area and the Gunners made no mistake from 12 yards.
The Addicks were much-improved in the second period but didn't make the most of the opportunities presented to them, with Wagstaff, Fleetwood and Tuna all going close.
As Charlton pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Arsenal made the game safe late on when Jay Simpson, who spent time on loan with West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League last term, slotted home after a swift counter-attack.
Despite the defeat, Matthew was in good spirits afterwards, stating: "It was a good work out against a very good Arsenal side. They fielded a strong team in terms of young professionals and several players who had league experience.
"Their first goal was a little bit sloppy but we were much more dominant in the second half. However, as sometimes happens when you're on top, we were caught on the counter-attack.
"We acquitted ourselves well in the second half, though, and created some good chances which on another day we might have taken.”
He added: "Overall it was a good game for us and the young lads will learn from playing against class opposition, while the professionals got some more match fitness under their belt.”

  • No need to feel embarrassed by this performance..in fact well done lads.
  • Doesn't sound too bad really.

Notice we had another trialist, shame it doesn't say what position he played. With Randolph in goal and what sounds like Fleetwood and Dickson up front, was probably a defender or midfielder. Wonder if it was one of the same trialists that played the other day in the other reserve friendly?
