Hartlepool manager on Charlton

edited August 2009 in General Charlton
“The demise of a club like Charlton is really sad to see, but we are seeing it more often each year now,” said Turner.

“Newcastle are now down in the Championship; Norwich, Charlton Leeds and Southampton are in this division; Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester have all been in League One recently. It’s made it more interesting and exciting, for football in general I think. Although when you see a club like Charlton coming into League One, yes it improves the league, but it is still very sad to see because only a few years ago they were playing Premier League football.” Phil Parkinson’s Charlton beat Wycombe on the opening day but exited the cup at the hands of League Two Hereford in midweek. Parkinson has had no transfer cash to spend and has had to rely on free transfers to strengthen his side, but Turner says the Addicks still have the nucleus of the side that played in the Championship last term.

He said: “I think Phil would have been delighted to have anything to spend over the summer, because I think the club are hoping for a takeover. They have serious financial problems because of the free-fall from the Premier League.

“But when you look at their team, they have quality players who have played at a higher level, so it will be a very difficult first home game for us. But we’ve performed well, worked extremely hard and got two good results away from home at MK Dons and Coventry and that has given us something to build on.”
