tradition

good to see charlton keeping up their tradition, of being dumped out of a cup competition to lower league opposition in the first round.

yes the management will go on about injuries and a much changed side but don't they think the fans might like a decent run and all the excitment that, that brings.

so what's next, getting knocked out of, the paint ball trophy?

  • League comes over cup any day of the week.
  • remember we're still 5th
  • I think its good that despite not announcing the takeover, the club still remembered the fans enough to keep this old tradition going.

    LONG MAY IT LIVE
  • That's the trouble with nostalgia, it aint what it used to be.
  • I knew we would loose. Even with our best Prem side (Parker/DiCanio etc) we would have lost there!!!
  • Totally not bothered about cups - but we must get out of this league and quickly. If we lose to the Monkey Hangers and then the O's then I will be pissed off...........
  • we always got knocked early under Curbs in his later years and we weren't doing too badly in the league then where we! The league is the most important thing for us this year. We have to get promotion. Whats the point in reaching the next few rounds of the cup if we're just going to get knocked out and miss out on promotion. One thing that the game last night did show us is Andy Gray reminding us all what a terrible player he is.
  • The thing is, no matter what any of us say "the league is more important", "we have other priorities" etc etc, it will always come across as sour grapes or bad losers to others.
  • or total bollox to some.
  • Its not sour grapes - Hereford deserve their win and our side should have been good enough to beat them and they weren't. What i mean is a cup run will mean nothing if we don't win promotion - which is surely our priority this season?

  • so the end logic of this is :

We go up -----no need to try in the Cup as " staying up will be our priority"
We are struggling or challenging in any league and our priority is ?

    so why bother.
  • Our team wasn't good enough to beat a team that werent good enough to stay in the league we are currently in.

    Not a good sign.
  • Ok lets hope we get to the quarter finals of the FA Cup and finish mid table! We'll all be happy then won't we!? We're not strugling in the league - we've played one game and won it. If we go up - which i think we will - then I think we'll stay up comfortably, then maybe we can take the cups a bit more seriously. We're not the only club guilty of prioritisng the league this season either. I think promotion is much more exciting that getting knocked out in the later rounds of a cup competetion which we had no chance of winning in the first place.
  • Smallish squad = cup and league run not sustainable.

IMHO am happy that we went out so as can concetrate on getting out of this divsion and back towards where we belong.
  • It's over now. Let's see how the regular team get on, on Saturday ?
  • [cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]It's over now. Let's see how the regular team get on, on Saturday ?

    Exactly! Well said that man.
  • Did we play last night? ;)
  • I can see the argument for not bothering with the Cup's but surely with the rotten couple of years we've just had any level of success have be welcomed even if it's a little run in the Carling leading to us getting knocked out in a round or two?

We need to seriously reassess ourselves and I doubt you'll find too many Div 3 teams putting out weakened teams last night yet we still seem to be thinking like we've got the strength in depth as it were.
  • We're now at the point where a cup run and away match against a big-boy or two = significantly more cash than we're getting in from normal business as usual. For that reason alone, it is stupid to attempt to paint last night as some kind of desireable outcome.
  • See, my take on the team selection last night was that we know we haven't got strength in depth, so if we lost one or more of our first choices to injury last night, we'd be totally stuffed for Saturday and the following Tuesday. Instead we gave the players on the fringes of the first team some valuable experience in a game that didn't particularly matter, and might've got away with it if it hadn't been for the penalty save.

But it was a team made up mainly of reserves/fringe players against a team who want to improve on last season (perhaps bounce back like we want to) in a 'competitive' match. I know we also need a massive improvement on last season too, but imo, I wouldn't judge last night's result as a sign for the rest of the season.

obviously we should try and compete regardless of competition, but saving our strongest side for the league in the hope of better performances has been the charlton way for a number of seasons now. If we balls it up again, then we should perhaps concentrate on europe!!!!:-)
  • I think that on the morning of the home game before the 1st round League Cup game next season, Parky should go out into the stands and sellotape the numbers 1 - 11 on the backs of random seats. If you get a seat with a number, that's your starting position in the cup game!!!

That would draw a few more spectators in, drawn by the chance of donning the famous red shirt - in fact if its a success he could use this method to select his side every week!

That's precisely the point though...they are part of our squad and when the inevitable injuries occur during the season most of the players out there last night will surely be getting a run out in the league. As for Hereford being a team wanting to bounce back and have something to prove then surely our lot should being trying to prove their worth and trying to command a place in our team.

Totally agree, they should be trying to win a regular place (as parky said on the OS before the game). Perhaps some of them did show something individually, but as a team, obviously not!
I just think (or rather hope) that we won't have to put out that side again this season, as it is already looking threadbare when the first choices are missing, but I think we'll still reinforce the squad before the end of august - well, we've got to really!!!
  • [cite]Posted By: J BLOCK[/cite]League comes over cup any day of the week.

on the basis we get promoted, you're right and i would go along with your remark. but on the basis we're languishing in mid table, then i see a cup run as a perfect antidote to what could be a disappointing season and lets face it we've had enough of those.

i don't see why cup matches aren't just an exstension of the league, we may not win the trophy, but that doesn't mean we should give up the ghost at the first hurdle.

we often hear it said that winning breeds confidence and that in turn, makes winning become a habit. and that's the attitude i'd like to see instilled into the players week in week out, regardless of what competition it is. injuries aside, i'd like our manager to select a team that stands the best chance of winning. it doesn't boost morale to have the attitude that it's ok if we lose because the game doesn't count / matter.

i don't want to see comments like " parky applauds hereford ' either, as if that's enough to let us off the hook. be gracious in defeat but don't make exscuses for a bloody awful performance that ultimately lets the fans down.
  • it was a lose lose situation. if parky fielded our best team lol, and they lost it would have been a really negative blow to their confidence, so by playing a changed/weakened side (they are all paid pro's) if we won, great, but then that would be expected as a we are in a higher league, if we lose well it wasn't the first 11. personally i'd have liked it if he'd have come with with sheff u's manager's response and said player's better start looking for another club. wonder how many in our squad have got other managers waiting to pounce ;-)
  • The team we played should have been strong enough to get a win. It was mostly league one standard players, plus a couple of young players who will be hoping to breakthrough this year.

I have no problem with the team selection, i just think the team and manager need to be proving early on that this year will be better than last year's under-performing rubbish. A more solid win against wycombe and then a win in the cup and everyone feels more confident and less anxious. But it's done now, so onto the next one.
  • i think what last night highlighted is the need to bring 2 to 3 players in to add quality and pressure on places. if we do not strengthen then we will not have the depth of squad to see us through a full season
