6ft +

edited August 2009 in General Charlton
Just had a flick through the Club Handbook over lunch and was surprised to see that we have as many players 6ft+. We had six in the starting line up and only Bailey and Sam who you would consider short. From where I was sat, I wouldn't have credited Dailly to be a 6 footer either. Nothing amazing here I know, but this height across the team should be used to its full potential, as it was on Saturday, at set plays throughout the season.

  • That Wycombe sub that came on right near the end must've been about 6ft 10 as he towered over Dailly and Llera.
  • Semedo is another one like Dailly that doesn't come across as big.

Burton isn't very big, 5 ft 8 according to the OS, same as Solly apparently. That doesn't seem right to me.

    Luke Oliver is 6' 7''

    Anyone over 6' 4'' is a freak : - )

6 ft 7 apparently, plays at centre back or up front
  • Burton still growing? 5ft 10 in the handbook and I'd make that about right. Maybe he'll be 6 ft come next season and develop his own robot dance celebration come 2012.
  • Agreed about the height thing. For a while we had a lot of relatively short players. This wasn't a problem when we had a lot of terriers like Robbo, Kins, Stuart etc in midfield with taller (not giants) like Bartlett up front and Brownie, Herman, Fortune at the back. I think we were unbalanced over the last two seasons with average height players.

I've managed various junior teams and the most successful have been where we've had extremes of height.

Bring back Lozano-Calderon and put Harry Pell in the team?

  • Who you calling a freak, Henry?

Be warned, us vikings are not known for our timidity - watch yourself or you could be in for a pillaging...
  • It's good that we're getting bigger. Since about 2005 the height thing started being coupled with a lot of people unwilling to challenge for 50/50's. Let's face it Ambrose is said to be six foot to six foot one, but only a few times did that have any effect in the box whilst out in the middle of the pitch his cowering in regards to 50/50 headed ball rendered his height irrelevant. It's a shame Gray doesn't use his height like Hunt but I suppose that's the winger in him.
  • i would say burton is 5ft 8. when i met him i was surprised he was shorter than i thought.. i was taller than him definitely. and suzi even taller.

No Henry, that's not quite right.

Surely you mean anyone over 6'3" is a freak ....?

    :o)
  • Never been convinced that the modern footballer has to be 6 foot plus. Albeit I think that is relevent to a centre half and goalkeeper, the current vogue that strikers have to be over 6 foot does not stand up, does it, Shearer, Rooney, Defoe, Ronaldo, Tevez, Owen. Kuyt, Davies, Robinho, are hardly giants, Yes Drogba,Carew, and Crouch especially has a height advantage, but compared to Lampard, Gerrard, Torres there ability has a lot more to do with it than just size.
