First Ever Game

With my son in Denmark until Monday will be taking my seven year old nephew to his first ever game tomorrow. It feels like quite a responsibility, as so many of us have a decent recall of our first matches, my aim is to get the little fella (who is really quite innocent and sweet for his age) to consider himself to be a Charlton Athletic supporter afterwards. He is obsessed with Dr Who, has no idea of football and football culture, and has probably no awareness of any teams beyond having heard of ManU and Arsenal....he initially thought his Uncle taking him to football would mean he will be playing...I am hoping for a successful indoctrination...can anybody suggest any failsafe ways of making sure he starts firmly on the road to becoming a Charlton supporter?

    Tell him that David Tennant is our striker and that the opposition are Daleks and that who ever comes out of the tardis (the tunnel) wearing red is the team he should comit to.

    This theory should reinforced by the inevitable shouts of "WHO are ya?" tomorrow ;-)

    You'll be hoping for one of those first games of the seasons that we used to have 9 or 10 years ago. Really good weather, our best 11 out there, we play good football and score 3, 4 or 5 goals and end the day top of the league.

    Now though more likely it'll rain and we'll draw 1-1, Wycombe equalising 2 minutes after we scramble in a goal.

    I was about to say that put him in J block with us lot we could convert anyone to be a CAFC fan in there. Also make sure he samples the cuture of being a Charlton fan show him the area maybe arrive early and have lunch in a pub so he can soak up some of the British atmosphere of a day out at the football.

    Good choice for his first game though should be a win.

    1. Get him down the front of whichever stand you're in before kick off for a close-up view of the warm up.
    2. Make sure he's in line for some of the sweets that are chucked by Floyd and Harvey (the cat and "bear").
    3. If it's not too late, get in touch with the club for a "greeting" at half-time. (BDL?).
    4. Lots of e-numbers, hot dogs and coke either before or at half time (tip: take a plastic coke bottle top in your pocket. He'll be impressed that Uncle Seth managed to get a bottle with a top, even though the nasty person serving cokes didn't let him have one).
    5. Take a pen and something to scrawl autgraphs on. If he's still interested, hang around for an hour after the game a get some players' signatures.

    77' against mansfield town when i was 6. won 3-0 but only remember watching the crowd. never seen so many people, lol. must have been about 200 charlton there.

    My first game at the Valley:

    Loosing 1-5 at half time.

    Lots of people unhappy and going home

    We score six goals and I can remember people holding up their fingers and saying '3 goals in 5 minutes'

    Lets hope your nephew has a similarly exciting experience

    Take spare clothes and something to do if its dull game. Being bored or cold will put him off for years.

    Ha ha Seth that made me laugh! You know, I can't remember when my Dad took me first as I was so young. I do remember my first away day, Arsenal in the FA cup 68?

    m2 i take it you mean the huddersfield town game. that was the highest scoring game in clubs history. no other away team has scored 6 and not won. johny summers scored 5 i think?

    My uncle took me to my first match at West Ham V Swindon when i was 7. He stood me on a milk crate in i think the north bank. 30 minutes into the game he made me get off it so he could throw it aqt the Swindon supporters. I didn't see much more of the match. Dont do that ... Believe me it affects you :-)
