Everyone's FOR a takeover then?

edited August 2009 in General Charlton
A serious question.

Is everyone happy for our club to be taken over by a person / people / a group that we have no idea about?

I for one have faith in our board so I'm happy to go with whatever they think best.

However it seems everyone on here is literally praying for *anyone* to take us over.

Or have I missed the point?

  • What Takeover?

Beware of Greek/arabs/Irish/Brits bearing gifts but on the other hand don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

While I'd welcome an injection of cash and the stability that would bring I would also like to see who the buyers are and find out what their plans and motives are.
  • Think people just want to know one way or the other and move on.It's doing more damage than good imo.
  • I trust the board, want it to go through to stabilise the club, hopefully with some decent investment in the club. From there it'll hopefully speed up the strengthening of the squad and help us keep the better players.
  • As long as they are worth squillions I don't care who they are

this has been going on for long enough that the current board must be satisfied out future won't ne jeopardised (they are fans after all)
  • It depepnds upon their motives, any takeover involving Peter Varney I would 100% welcome!
  • Suppose you owned a football club which was losing money and you were looking for a way out. And suppose you were introduced to a potential group of rich buyers who you knew were not the sort of people your club's fans to would take well to. (Perhaps they are foreign, asset-strippers ... maybe oil oligarchs, gun runners, funded by terrorists ... that sort of thing). What you would probably do is sign an NDA - and make it bi-partite - and refuse to give out any information until the deal is signed, sealed and done. You'd keep quiet. Keep fans at arms' length. Agree to meet fans and season ticket holders, but then pull out at the last minute. Place the odd statement in the press and on the club's official site, just to keep the restless fans suitably occupied.

But that wouldn't happen at Charlton, would it?
  • yes , my mum cooks a great apple one.Or is that a turnover ?
  • I doubt that would happen Chizz, would those directors really want all their hard work destroyed? They are fans as well, yes they've made their fair share of mistakes over the last couple of years but I don't think they'd do anything of that magnitude to harm the club simply to better their own financial positions.
  • To be fair Chizz there's always going to be an NDA, but I'm liking the conspiracy.
  • I think the most we can hope for is that the Board stick to their word and sell to someone who sees a future for the club and is willing to do stuff to make that happen

speculating of course but one reason they may want to keep things quiet is so we can't become part of some bigger 'game', where a buyer uses us to play off against another potential club purchase - is that what happened with Zabeel and why they asked the club to make the deal public?
  • Yes to a takeover.

I don't want rich Arabs or Yanks with tonnes of cash for transfers and I'm not even bothered what division we are in, I just want the team to be competitive and the club to be run in a self-sufficient manner.

For this to happen we need a fresh start, debts nulled or managed and the club to be run well with a vision of long-term stability and success on the pitch.

Unless the current board write-off the debts (which they won't) a takeover is the only way forward.
  • In the words of Blackadder
" id sell my soul for a stack of cash, cream cakes and a pill of porn"
  • I think we need the ownership situation resolved ASAP. It seems that Richard Murray and perhaps one or two other serious shareholders want out and until they go we'll have endless rumours perhaps resulting in the club standing still rather than progressing.

That isn't to say I welcome any old-investor, preferably I want one who is a) in for the long-haul and b) aware of the club, its fan base and traditions and not out to rip the heart out of the club in an attempt to make us a premiership club in two years or else. Looking at say Man City I wonder what their fans are feeling - seeing their club linked with players who a few months ago wouldn't have considered Man City as a destination. In essence I want evolution with players like Jonjo brought through properly rather than revolution.
  • i think it's admirable that everyone says "i don't care about the money".........but come on.....when zabeel were about to take us over, we were all licking our lips bigtime. picking our dream elevens, wondering who we'd buy first. i'm the same as the next man in that whoever takes over charlton i want them to keep the traditions alive but if we weren't taken over, got promoted, got into the premiership, got into europe, the club would evolve. some traditions would stay, some would have to change. if a rich group took us over, got us back to the prem within 3.....would that really be a bad thing? would the better youth players we have produced leave if were challenging higher up the league? we'll still produce the parkers, shelvy's but this way we'd hang on to them and not have to consistently batter off bigger clubs. we could build around these players. i know man city are a bit on the ludicrous side but had they not had all this money would richards and ireland still b e there? they'd have been snapped up by liverpool or chelsea in a minute. the sad fact of the matter is football has changed, money is a big player nowadays and without it i can't see the current regime getting us back to the pastures we once graced
  • its not true to say no one expressed concerns about losing our soul when the zabeel takeover was in the offing
  • My only real concern is whoever takes over may have been fully vetted as best as the current Board could possibly do at the time. But what if the new owner gets bored say five years or so down the line & then basically decides they want out & are not prepared to put any more money in, back to square one all over again are we not ?
  • As long as they keep Steve Waggott on and give him a much deserved pay increase then I, and I'm sure 99% of fans, will be happy.

by then myabe the Supporters Trust will be in a position to step in ?

Long time away and that could happen whoever takes over. Not really a lot we can do about that, have to trust the board and hope they sell to the right kind of people.

Oiii Seth, get over here !!!

    ;-)
  • Personally I think the days of 'charlton' people running the club are over. The current board have made such a hash of it im not sure it works anyway.

Im sure the majority of the employees let go would agree.

Its laughable people wondering who our next owners will be, one thing is certain they'll need big cash and be certifiable . . .
  • I think i would like a takeover to go ahead as it will give us more funds. Howeve do not see y any company in the Business world would want to buy a League 1 club so until, its offical i reckon its all rubbish.

    Have to agree with that.

I think that is very unfair. Unless you snap on "in the last 3 years" to the end of your sentence.
  • I'd much prefer to have Charlton people in there.

Granted the current board have made a few mistakes over the last few seasons but i'll always be eternally grateful to them for putting their own money in and having given us the last 15 / 20 years or so.

    I'd go along with that.

The ground alone shouts out as a monument to the previous good work of the Board.

Not to mention our time at the summit of English football.

They messed up the departure of Curbs and have struggled ever since to put that right in essence.
  • Dress it up in anyway you like really.

In terms of motives cant see why anyone would be nuts enough to buy us in our present state.

Out of interest when Parkinson mentions "the Chairman" I presume he means DC?

No, the "Chair man" is the bloke in charged of hiring all the additional chairs for Friday afternoon's press conference (3:00pm, The Valley).

PP reports to Richard Murray so I'd guess him means RM when he says Chairman.
