Make some noise this season

edited August 2009 in General Charlton
The forthcoming season is going to be so important if we are to recover from the losing mentality of the last 3 seasons, and the off-the-pitch turmoil.

We, the fans, need to get behind whichever 11 players pull on the Charlton shirt. We need to sing, chant and generally make The Valley intimidating for other teams.

Over the last few seasons I have been quite embarrassed by our fans attempts at singing - all we ever seem to launch into is the offensive "Oh south london is wonderful" "build a bonfire" (wtf are we singing about our two hated rivals, do you think they sing about us), a couple of lines of VFR and the two north stand blocks competing with each other.

Can I respectfully suggest that if there are any Covered End choir members reading this that you put your heads together and come up with some better (and less offensive to female supporters) songs and chats. Make up songs showing support for individual players.

Hearing Leeds fans singing Marching on Together creates a positive and intimidating atmosphere. Man City have Blue Moon, Wet Sham have Bubbles. Norwich, Coventry, Sheff United fans all make a lot of noise which frankly makes me ashamed of our fans attempts. Watching Spanish or Italian football on tv I see fans chanting along to familiar tunes.

No doubt someone on this forum will find fault or mock my words, but I'm sure I can't be the only fan who wants to hear more atmosphere and support of my team.

Come on you Addicks!

  • I think you may need to come up to the covered end. We usually sing for large parts of the game but are the only ones singing and it's hard for other fans to hear us. Saying you were embarrassed by us is a very harsh opinion and quite a stupid one. Being to many away games and seen how other teams fans sing I would say no way could you be "embarrassed" by us. We sing our hearts out but at times you've got to understand it was very hard encouraging the team only for them to be playing utter rubbish. We will continue with the noise and chanting we make and instead of being ashamed by us perhaps you could pull your finger out and actually come up and sing with us.
  • not gonna happen. if we can't get a great atmo with 20k + we stand no chance with the gates we#re gonna get this season. I sit in the J Block and we sing pretty much the whole game but theres just not enough people.....

Instead of asking others to make songs up make some yourself

That has to be the funniest comment I have ever read on here.
  • There's no rule saying you can't sing and shout anywhere else in the ground, I lose my voice every game through singing and yelling in one form or another. Just bellow out whenever you see fit, you start others follow. No shame in it

Whilst I won't mock you for the sentiment of your words, I will point out the naivety of one aspect of them. You quote (amongst others) Man City, West Ham, Leeds and Sheffield United as clubs to aspire to when it comings to making a racket - yet in the previous paragraph you ask our fans to make noise that (paraphrasing) 'isn't offensive to women'. Have you ever been to Upton Park, Elland, Road, Maine Road (or the new City stadium) or Brammall Lane? You couldn't have chosen four worse clubs to use as an example if you didn't want to contradict your first sentiment entirely.

Oh, and as someone who has been to the Camp Nou on more occasions than you've watched it on Sky Sports I can guarandamntee you that the noise level there only exceeds that at 'noisy' English grounds about six times a year. Most of the time its as quiet as Highbury/The Emirates. This goes for Italy as well - I've seen Palermo play about ten times now - only twice have I seen it 'noisy' - and they were games against Catania - which weren't so much 'noisy' as 'insane'
