Protest

edited August 2009 in General Charlton
I just wanted to say that I hope that none of our fans will act like a bunch of spoilt brats and stage a protest.

I said it before and will say it again, a protest is probably the worst thing that can happen when a club is having takeover talks.

We had an answer from the Club especially pointing out that a protest could be VERY harmful.

I hope that any numpty thinking a protest would be a good idea to think twice about it.

We've got to get behind our club.

  • Do leave it out.12 trainspotters waving plackards outside the west stand is hardly going to be enough to ward off a multi-million pound businessman.

If it does then i don't think football's really for them.

So what would be the point of the 12 trainspotters protesting?

May be TFL have banned thermos flasks from train stations

if fans want to protest then good luck to them. Good on them for taking some action rather than just going on and on t'internet.

Just be clear what they are protesting about, what they hope to achieve and what the negative consequences could be.

Personally i think talk of any protest v ipswich was overstated. no one stepped forward to organise or lead a protest.

Might be only 12 trainspotters today but tomorrow, who knows how many....?

Don't forget, there was once only 12 members of the Valley Party...

...and, because the Valley Party had absolute clarity around its purpose, nature and aim, the 12 became many more.

However, 12 people standing up and shouting "Parky out", "sack the board" or even "fill up the pot-holes" isn't organised, isn't representative and isn't going to achieve anything.
  • I would not protest considering the board want us stay clear for the time being.

The communication between the fans forum and the board is good enough at the moment.

Sorry Disco couldn't disagree more with second sentence mate.

I think the resignation of a key member of the Fans' forum as announced on another thread suggests otherwise.

The guys on the forum have done well to get the information they have got for sure but at the cost of much hard work, frustration and a genuine Charlton fan.

It really depends if a takeover is happening or not. If it is then I see its best just to leave it for the time being, I am suprised its taken this long to negotiate the board must suffer from laryngitis lol

If the takeover does not go ahead and we see some more bad news then yeah I will be the first in the que to protest. I just don't think its the right time to protest as of yet.

I don't know mate but all I know is if it won't for the fans fourm we would not have a statement from the board on friday.

At least it can be effective.

Oh, I wouldn't say that, several thousand baying fans played their part to perfection in helping to get rid of Donkey Dowie and Captain Pardwash....
  • Not really true, the club sacked Dowie because of the off the field stuff and they dithered for around five matches too long getting rid of Pardew. Generally it seems that decisions have been made with little concern for what the fans have chanted/booed.

(which in reality, if their decision making had been good, would be the right thing to do. We like to think of the club as a democracy but ideally you want leadership at the top who have a strong plan, ignore us fickle supporters and stick with it to bring success. Where this falls down is when you make the repeated mistakes of the last few seasons and it becomes clear there is no plan!)

The communication has been dire, but it's improved. It's a shame it had to be prompted by a formal letter from the FF, but at least the board had the decency to respond as best they could. I'm a bit pissed off with how things have been handled this summer - but there is little grounds for a protest, at this moment in time, imo.

Disagree with the first part - Pardew was the fan's man, not necessarily the boards unanimous first choice.

Second part is right though - we need some clear and strong leadership right now. Time will tell if Parky is actually a good manager or if last season was the norm, but I can at least see a positive slant on this that they have made their decison and are going to stick by it and give it a fair chance to bear fruit rather than knee-jerking to every whim of the latest vociferous group of fans.

As you say, decisions have been bad recently so it gets harder and harder to just show a bit of faith, but I think if supporters want to 'help' at the moment then we need to be showing a united front of support, rather than openly attacking the club. Lets see what August and September bring in terms of results, signings, and takeover. If we're still sinking fast, then maybe that's the time for a mass public showing of discontent but it seems to me that, right now, morale is just strating to get back to 'normal' in the playing squad and I think we need to minimise disruption right now and do our best to create an atmosphere around the club that makes it easier to get that win against Wycombe. A bad start to the season could be as disasterous to our long term as the takeover collapsing.
  • so long as it is done in the right way and they are clear what you are protesting about then i think it will be fine and hopefully productive.
  • No one has said what the protest is actually about though... is it

    * that Parkinson is still here? (hard to have done anything while the TO is ongoing)

    * that the board are dragging their feet over the sale? (which may or may not be the case, we don't officially know...)

    * that the new owners are negotiating too hard and should get on with it? (and protesting against them before they've even started isn't great)

    * that communication has been abysmal this summer (fair enough but not really worthy of a protest!)

    * that we want KFC instead of Wimpy for our catering this season? (I agree with this protest actually... mmmmm Zinger Tower Burger.... )

So as has been asked a few times and received no significant answers, what exactly would the protest be about?

I dunno, these protesters just aren't communicating with the fans properly. Can the FF send them a letter asking them to sort it out please. :)

Maybe they had one protester for each of the above...
  • "What do we want?"
    "WE'RE NOT QUITE SURE"
    "When do we want it?"
    "SOONISH"
  • Does it count as a protest if when the new kit comes out I get " Christensen" printed on the back ?

  • monty python comes to mind when charlton fans protest.
  • What did the Board ever do for us?

Well they built the Valley . . . and then there was all those years in the Premiership . . .
  • can we do a BORED protest, rather than BOARD?
  • Perhaps we should do a Broad protest, to get him dropped for the nest Test?
