ASEC deal has ended

edited July 2009 in General Charlton
As some of you know I do the FM research for Charlton. I've just found out from one of the African researchers that our deal with ASEC has ended. Will be interesting to see what happens to some of the players we signed from them, as they are contracted to us and out on loan at French clubs (well, they were, maybe not now).

Using Google translate it seems to suggest there will hopefully be a friendly relationship between the clubs.

I wonder if the club will mention this any where, I'd say it's also likely our other links with foreign clubs will end.

Another one of our affiliates, Herfølge (of Denmark) have merged with another club to become Køge. Not sure how this impacts our link with them, or if it even exists any more.

I'm trying to find out about some of the other link ups we've got, Germinal Beerschot (Belgium), MyPa (Finland, I know this was originally a 4 year deal but it might been extended?), Angers SCO (France) and Shandong Luneng (China).

  • Good digging Sco.

I'm sure the 'friendly relationship' ended the minute we got screwed over on Gohi Bi
  • Good point, though who's fault was that? The players, ASECs or his new club? (Standard Liege I think?)
  • Probably a combination of all three, but i think it highlighted that if anything decent come along, we could not expect any of the other parties to respect the arrangement.

A real shame if true as had potential to supply quality players but the writing had to be on the wall when the star of the bunch was sold to Standard Liege. Maybe says something about the contracts or the ability of a club in the UK enforcing them in the Ivory Coast.

I know there will be lot of hair pulling and moaning about this being a total waste of time and money but Peter Varney obviously thought it was worth giving a go and so did I. I still do. It was the right thing to try at the time IMHO. It seems it's not worked out.

I know that since leaving he has taken on untouchable saint like status and is excused any criticism but I'm sure those who are only too happy to sling mud at other board members will be level headed and rush to blame Peter.

    Or maybe not.

I actually think these deals are pretty bad in general. If you look at the players of African descent that have played in the top flight across europe over the years many african nations could have had top club sides with the quality of the players they produce if they somehow managed to get the infrastructure in place.

Instead any players that show potential seem to get snapped up from an early age by big european clubs creating a sort of "brain drain" of talent in their home nations and stunting the development of the game there.

I agree. I think a lot of the work behind the scenes, in the community etc not just in this deal, but in the other links, is often forgotten about. Obviously it doesn't really effect the team on the pitch, but the club might be getting other things out of some of these deals that we never hear about.

If another club had linked up with them at the time we'd have been saying why aren't we doing it. If we were still in the Prem I'm sure we'd have extended it.

In the end we just can't afford to spend money on helping to finance another clubs academy, especially when the players need work permits and there's always the risk of another club taking the player on. It's a cost we can cut and because it was very much a long term thing it wasn't worth it while we're in League One.
  • AFKA - can you summarise what happened with Bi for those of us unaware?

As I stated a few days back....... over the years I have seen something like 10 or so of these supposed link up's with other clubs/organisations....they've never proved to be remotely successful I'm afraid to say(and several of them highly embarrassing in fact)....not knocking those enthusiastic folk at The Valley who try to get things rolling....but the plain truth is, for whatever reason, they simply come to precious little......or in most cases absolutely............................................................. 'nothing'.
  • I can't believe you are saying our link up with Inter Milan didn't work out. I thought Figo, Adriano & co had great spells when with us :-)
  • i would just like to thank the players that we signed from asec for their stirling performance in a charlton shirt
  • They didn't do any worse than the rest of them...
  • they tried as hard as some of our players last year

    LOL!
  • Excuse my ignorance, what does FM research mean?

Hands up who thought *any* of these foreign tie-ups would prove fruitful.
  • Oh no, on top of everything else the ASEC deal has ended, how much lower can we get?

Who gives a flying fuck, time to concentrate on our own youth team rather than poncing about in 3rd world countries failing miserably to get young players to sign for us. The club ought to look at reigning in the spending on 'community' projects too, if we are as skint as seems likely I don't think we can afford to be the king of the pc gang anymore. Besides, the spin off from this was meant to be the next generation of fans! Anyone think this has happened or that they follow manure, arse, Liverpool or chels? No one wants to follow losers. Plough the money saved into the real youth, our youth teams.

Pretty sure this is all funded from outside the club.

    The Football Manager games.

I think there's been a lot less of that recently, or at least a lot less mention of it on the OS.

Not saying it's a big deal, but I know some fans are interested. When we were in the Prem it was a reletively cheap gamble to potentially have some very good Premier League players in 4 or 5 years time. Now it's an expense we don't need.
  • Thanks Sco.
  • Aahhhhhhhh man. What does this mean for Bakary Soro, Ismael Beko Fofana, Serge Deble? (Thanks Scoham, I play my FM a lot, I know a few of the names thanks to you I presume :D) And do we still hold any of their registrations, like we supposedly did for last season?

By the way, I'm new around here... In case you've not guessed...
  • No idea. Am trying to find out. To be honest a lot of this is down to the French (or whichever country they are on loan in) researchers, as their club signs the player and they find out he's actually on loan from us.

Serge Deble is meant to have another 2 years on loan at Angers SCO, but obviously we've seen plenty of times loans can be cancelled or players recalled (Smertin, Bouazza etc).

I wouldn't be surprised if none of them are contracted to us this time next year. That's just a guess though.

I know we were supposed to have signed more players from ASEC last January (then sent them out on loan), though it was never confirmed, just mentioned very briefly on ASECs website.

I'm a little bit sceptical to say the least... at least they're young, and not, well, Llera/Richardson/O'Leary age (considering where they've come from).

I'd be surprised if we saw any of these guys in the shirt, if I'm honest, yeah. Though Bakary Soro, he interests me the most in all this, I think he's meant to have gained his Belgian nationality by now so he can play in England... 3 years, I think it's been, which is enough.

I'm clutching at straws, aren't I... Oh well.
