Something wrong with the books?

edited July 2009 in General Charlton
I am not being funny but there must be something wrong other than the debt within the club if this take over fails to. As when Zabel (was that theyre name again?) fell through they had already looked at the books within the club of the money out of the club and in etc... But they're is something going on and if this takeover falls through, we definatly need answers!

  • Zabeel had said there was nothing wrong arising from the due diligence they did, and the club had no issues in that regard, it was just that they had rethought their strategy. I cant imagine football club accounts are that difficcult - this is really not a big business. (Even Man U is not a very big business in the scheme of things.)

But it may be that financial projections - usually centering on cashflow forecasts - may be causing them more concern than anything in the books to date. But this is all speculative - surely CAFC will be bought for its potential to be developed, its location, catchment area, etc, which will need initial funding to capitalise on these opportunities. If only Curbs hadn't been let go that last season of his contract - I never understood the logic of that decision, given it was our most important season for staying up.
  • Nothing wrong with the books, apparently. But as IdleHans says, it may be about the financial projections and operating costs that can't be covered by revenues in League 1.

All about attracting players, and having a manager in place can make a big difference.

Imagine if he stayed and we went down, the excuses would be that our main targets didn't want to sign for a club when they knew the manager was leaving in a years time. We'd be saying we should have let him go a year early, got the new man in place and got those players in.

Not saying that would have happened, but it wouldn't have definitely worked out even if he had stayed another year.
  • Fair enough, and hindsight is always 20-20. But it could have been an opportunity to bring in a successor halfway through the season to prepare for Curbs departure subsequently. Couldnt have been worse really, could it?
  • exactly idle , we could not have done worse if we had kept dowie or pardew till the end of last season....
i wonder if the one year left on parkinsons contract is affecting the players that sign !!

They're probably thinking, "Oh, Christ, surely not that long ....?"

Probably not. I can see what they were thinking at the time though.

In comparison, in appointing Les Reed I have no idea what they were thinking. Several chairman/boards seem to like the idea of an assistant taking over, but in the Prem over the years it's almost always failed. Certainly not improved on the previous manager either. That confuses me far more than agreeing with Curbs to let him go a year early.

It's a bit different now, we're attractive to players as a big club in the division. In some cases, players may also prefer us than the likes of Blackpool and Scunthorpe, a division above us.

In the Prem we were fighting with bigger and similar sized clubs for our targets. There were players that signed partly because of Curbishley. Now it's much less of an issue. We can't get a manager in that players want to play for over other managers, but we're one of the biggest clubs in the league now.
  • Apart from Charlton .......Leeds, Norwich & Southampton will apeal to a prospective signing more than the likes of Gillingham and Northampton Town.

That's only 3 clubs, still a lot less competition. Some clubs will be more attractive than others, though the gap between them is probably smaller.
