holes in the squad, how bad is it really?

edited July 2009 in General Charlton
regardless of the quality we now have and including all of those still under contract, I wondered what people thought the holes still were, and what might parky do on his current limited funds.

Strikers we are still blessed with plenty of them even if Gray departs, hopefully a pairing could be

Central midfield is still currently fairly well blessed barring more departures

Defence, we could use another centre half but if we re-sign Fortune, and with Semedo and Youga able to do a job anywhere in the back four do we have enough for this level and with priorities perhaps elsewhere?

Creative wide men, with Sam and Wagstaff, I think we are a bit short and we should blow the budget on a decent left sided wide player.

Thoughts?

  • Blow the budget on keeping Bailey....he's our left side. Basey as back up.
  • Three positions we need, centre back, left wing and a striker.

Also need to give Randolph a new deal, use emergency loans and u18s as back up keepers where needed.

Centre back, get Fortune signed up and sign one more player. Youga, Semedo and Mambo as back up. Left wing, sign someone up but as competition for Bailey. Basey as back up to them. Up front, sign a proven goalscorer if possible, Gray likely to go, Tuna can still play for u18s or even go out on loan.

Right back is fine, left back is ok, could be improved but not priority, don't want too many new players anyway. Right midfield Sam has back up in Bailey, Sinclair (when fit) and Wagstaff, ok for now. Central midfield we just need to keep Bailey, Racon Shelvey, plenty of back up is there in Spring, Sinclair, Semedo and we have Stavrinou coming through.
  • So we just need a back up for the manager's position, then .... ?

    ;o)
  • Well, they say Kinsella is now on a rolling contract, so yes we do in a way...
  • Left winger would be nice, although if we keep Sam Racon Shelvey Bailey that will be our midfield next year.

Defence needs improving big time. Llera nto sure after Welling although early days. Mambo can't play a whole season, Semedo/Basey/Youga can only cover there.

And up front we need someone who can score, otherwise we won't be going anywhere
  • It's a bit like potholes in the car park...They need filling. We have a threadbare squad and will struggle unless there's new investment.

What about shelvey in the hole 5 man midfield, parky has shown a preference for this? Myself I'd prefer two strikers

That was down to the lack of strikers and a lot good midfielders.

He has said his preference is 4-4-2.

Get a good striker in, Zheng has gone, back to 4-4-2.
  • It's how the team play as a unit which is relevant, rather than picking a team based on the best 11 players at the club.

It shouldn't matter if, for example, Burton only scores 10 goals in a season if he leads the line well, and creates space and assists for others.

But some people will just expect a striker to score 20 goals a season or say he should be replaced as not good enough, without considering the role played and his indirect but nevertheless vital contribution.

No way will all of those 4 still be here come the start of the season. I'm not sure who it was but someone on here knew Bailey's mate or his missus (yes i know it's a mate of a mate) and basically said that a deal is sorted and he'll be off pretty soon.

Of course, towards the end of last season we started looking more like a team and I hope that continues next season. We need to get back to having a good team rather than trying to put better players (loanees) in hoping it'll solve our problems.

Burton should do exactly that, not loads of goals but he will create space and chances for others. He set up a few at Welling but we just didn't take them.

Players like Bartlett and Di Canio have performed that role in the past, Burton can do the same.
