  • if the takeover is going to go ahead they had better get it finalised soon so don't lose Fortune as well as ZZ and Holland.

jeez, our defence is looking poor at the moment.
  • ...to his desk... which explains why he's not done the honourable thing.
  • Anyone know when the transfer window closes ?
  • [cite]Posted By: SparrowsLane[/cite]Anyone know when the transfer window closes ?
    31st August for permanent signings

So, are we going to pay the ransom?
  • Cheers ! We have got some time. I suspect that the club will have put together a list of targets to go for if the takeover goes through. Lets hope so
  • problem is by then the decent players would have been snapped up and our out of contract players we would like to kep (holland, Fortune and ZZ) would have left.

By the time the takeover goes through (if there is one) we will have missed the boat.

I'd rather our boat was running, if a lttle late, than not at all though
  • What if it's the Titanic. Might be better not to be on it.
  • Clearly we need to get Randolph and Fortune on new contracts. Holland can go, I don't see him offering anything on the pitch that Spring and Sinclair can't add - not anything that makes a huge difference anyway. He'd only be a squad player anyway, and we already have replacements here.

Then we need a right back, another centre back to go with Llera and Fortune, left winger, striker and maybe even a left back. Central midfield depends on the situation with Racon, Shelvey and Bailey.

Agree. Richardson could be the RB and he can also play LB. Certainly need to keep Fortune and add one more CH.

And a striker who can lead the line and score a few goals.
  • I was so expecting to see someone had wrote shame it isn't his neck .... I'm so disappointed in you all ;-)
  • hmm how come he's made a signing then? I guess its one in one out at the moment?

it's okay, my hands are round his neck !!!

    It'll never catch on

Think outside the box, score inside the box, that's what I say ; - )

Sadly lacking last season and last night. I wouldn't trust our forwards to lead the blind
  • Parkinson said: "We've got a lot of holes to fill in this squad and we are waiting to do that."

While we'd all like to see new and more players, I can't see many gaps. Another centre half possibly, but even then we have Mambo to step up and three of the four full-backs can play there. A left winger perhaps, but we seem sorted in terms of numbers - if some faces don't fit, then that's a different proposition. After all, most of the squad have played at least a division higher.

Is our manager getting his excuses ready early?
  • Some strikers who can score and a couple of centre backs plus Fortune.

What I saw of Llera last night I hope he is not going to to be our first choice centre back for the season...

TBF to Parky I can see 11 gaps that need filling.

Agreed Covered End, They sound like good reasons to me....

    What are you his dentist?
  • It appears to me the message Parkinson is sending is that we can't compete well with our current players. So his hands are tied...like the reasoning he gave last season, the players here are not good enough...hence the endless string of loans and whatnot (Spring).
I would faint clean away if Parkinson said:
"We have brilliant players here, some young enough to inprove more, others building a good level of consistency, skilled players brave enough to use the skills on the pitch, experienced players who will now develop their nous to add to the mix, a great team spirit, and an eagerness and enthusiasm for training and getting fit. If we added to the squad we already have, competition for places would sharpen, and I would need to disappoint a lot of good players if I can't fit them into a first eleven, but i am positive and always expect everybody to give 100%, as I intend to"
Don't reckon I'll be hearing stuff like that, more truthful I suppose when you hear Parky say our players are not gonna be enough and everybody knows we need others.
  • Not a fan of Parky but I do feel a bt sorry for him. The squad is tiny and made up mainly of kids. We have a half decent midfield if we keep them all but that is a big if. There is clearly strengthening required upfront and in defence. The takeover has dragged on so long that as said above we are in real danger of losing out on any of the players he had targetted and losing those out of contract

Rubbish. I count a squad of 24 without the few out of contract. Excluding half a dozen kids who have only the odd game under their belts, that's 18 many of whom have played at a higher level than this, some in the Prem. Regardless of opinions of their merits, we have five strikers costing a combined £3m and barring sales, I reckon the midfield that finished last season was one of the best in the Championship. Of the kids, I expect Waggy, Solly and Mambo to step up and make an impact. Parky has one of the best squads in the division, adding more bodies will only let him tinker with the line-up as he did last year. Settled sides win games.
  • But it's not just a question of numbers, it's a question of the balance of the squad. How many centre backs do we have? How many right backs? How many left backs? And of those, how many have played more than 40 first team games (ie one full season). We've got loads of midfielders, and a fair number of "strikers", but to say the defence is threadbare is putting it mildly.

I have to take issue with this. We currently only have two players under contract who have played in the Premiership, Deon Burton and Lloyd Sam.

A lot of our players may have played a higher standard, but it's the rubbish we've ended up with that got us relegated to this level. Time to fill some gaps.

I think sometimes we need reminding how far we've fallen.
  • I agree that the squad got us here but IMO you don't need ex premiership players to get you out of league 1, look at Scunthorpe for example.

We have a very strong midfield of Spring (hate him or love him he is good enough for league 1) Bailey, Racon, Shelvey, Semedo (the forgotten man).

We have strikers that can score goals in league 1. McLeod and Dickson. Fleetwood had a good loan spell at Exeter last season, who are now in our league. I'm not Deon Burton's biggest fan but there are plenty of worse strikers in this league.

We've just signed MK Dons centre half and got in the leeds skipper to help us out at the back. We've got YOUGA and Basey for left back who are more than adequat and in goal we have young Robbie Elliot who also showed he is also more than capable at playing at a higher level.

I think if Jon Fortune signs a new deal and maybe one or two good youngsters on loan from Prem clubs we definately have one of the better squads in the League and Parkinson would have no excuse.

Although saying all that, Pardew had a very very strong squad when we come down IMO. Andy Reid and Iwelumo just two names to mention who are now playing in the premiership.
  • It's the right gaps that need filling though which means defence and it's pretty obvious we're in the market for a keeper aswell. It's vital that we don't start thin on the ground again this year which may mean another two center halfs coming in. Parky will know better than anyone that he'll need to find his best side early on, the tinkering will only come with poor results.
  • Listening to Parky re-kindles a long-held worry I have that too many football managers behave too much like recruitment consultants and not enough like football coaches. We managed to field 22 players last night yet apparently we need more bodies in the place.

Why can't they focus a bit more on developing what they have rather than trying to poach players that have been developed by others. It's a big club, big budget mentaility and it didn't help Dowie, Pardew or Parky.

So Parky may be stayin or going but what we need is a Manager who can manage what he has to get the best out of the players at his disposal.
