I'm trying to convine my mum to go as she's only up the road and would get the 'away' representation up a bit.

Charlton Athletic
by 5ForKeeps (U2517939) 06 July 2009

Your club is part of historic event against my local side this coming Sunday the 12th July. You will be the first English side to play at Ferrycarraig Park in Wexford, Ireland.
It is a honour for a club like Charlton to come play along with Wolves before the start of the English season to play us.
Hope some of your supporters will be over for the occasion.
The club was formed in 2007, brainchild of our owner and manager Mick Wallace. Side is purely amateur in the second tier of League of Ireland football. Currently in 5th position in the second tier of League of Ireland, reached our first senior cup final last year unfortunately beaten 6-1 by professional outfit Derry City.

  • What a warm message from what sounds like really welcoming people.

Can we do anything as a group to strengthen connections between the 2 clubs?
  • I was engaged to a girl from Wexford. They HATE the English .....
  • I think No. 1 in South London was trying to sort something out.

lol they all hate the English! But Waterford/Wexford is a renowned republican stronghold.

Most wont hold it against you personally though!

My m&d moved to kerry a few years back and when St George's came round one year we joked about him putting a flag up on the gatepost. He said one of the locals told him he'd be OK putting a St Georges flag up more than a union flag as they hate the British rather than the English!!!
  • My auntie lives in the rebel county (most republican, apparently) of Cork. When I went there I expected lots of grief for being English and got precisely none, even in Cork city. I spoke to the locals about it and they just said 'it's about the person'. So don't act like a total c*ck and you'll be fine. I found them really welcoming and good fun, to boot. Given all the Irish/English history I was impressed by their attitude. They struck me as forward, not backward looking people.

To paraphrase the great Father Ted: 'The oirish - a great bunch of lads'.

Even though I'm very English, working in Cornwall, I'm the Ireland territory manager with the company I work with and have built a warm and friendly rapport with many of my Irish accounts. I've even got invitations to go and spend holiday time staying with a couple of them this summer in Dublin and Galway.

And when they come over here for business functions, afterwards we have good times, too much alcohol and plenty of crazy laughs.

I like the Irish people - they have a warmth and generosity of spirit.
And do they know how to have a good time!
  • I've spent a lot of time over there (mostly Killarney, Co Kerry) visiting wife's family. I've never had any problems at all (apart from understanding the Kerry accent!). The only incident of note was at Puck Fair (an almighty p*ss up in a place called Killorglin where they stick a goat on top of some scaffolding for three days and spend the whole time on it) one year where I had some 12 year old slagging the British and saying how he was delighted when the IRA blew up the bandstand in Hyde Park. I responded by explaining that we were all European and giving him a big cuddle...
  • I've never personally had any grief at all and, to my knowledge, nor have my parents. All those who helped my parents settle in are wonderful people, very welcoming.

It only really hit home when on one trip over there, on a main road between Killarney and Tralee, next to one of the many 'monuments to the struggles' there stood a 30 feet high wireframe letter H to which were attached posters of all those who died in the H block hunger strikes. I saw two of those monuments and as a Brit it chilled me to the bone, and made me realise that feelings still run deep for some.
  • I think anyone who goes will have a great time, and have very rarely had any English mates have any issues over there. That said, i probably wouldn't expect a warm welcome if you turn up draped in a Union Jack and singing 'No Surrender' ;0)

All organised now thanks Henry ! Yes, I'll be there with my two sons and their cousin who will be the Charlton Athletcic mascot for the day. He is a lad from Gorey, Co. Wexford and has supported Charlton from a very early age (he didn't have much choice as grandfather, father, uncles cousins are all addicks ! ) he gets over to The Valley whenever he can with his dad. He'll be taking a few friends of his from his home town and they have all been made to wear one of his various Charlton shirts !! one is a ballboy and will be wearing one under his Wexford shirt ! I hope there will be a good turnout of Charlton suppporters making the trip, it's a very nice part of Ireland with excellent beeches if the weather is good. Curracloe beach (where the beach sceens from saving private Ryan were filmed) and is close to where the Wexford game will be played, then for those travelling on to the Bray game, I would suggest taking in Btittas Bay, which is another excellent spot for those who like a nice sandy beach. Other nice places to visit are Glendalough in Co. Wicklow again close enough to Bray for those staying for the few days, and Powerscourt in Enniskerry.
Everyone will get the warmest of Irish welcomes, unless as bigstemarra points out you decide it's a good idea to behave like an "eejit"
  • Went over in my new BMW in 1995 just after the ceasefire and got no end of stick....even got refused a drink in one pub...Ring of Kerry area....also saw the paramilitary doing a mock excercise on a remote beach...I didnt hang around for a chat, needless to say it coloured my opinion of our Oirish cousins
  • There is good and bad everywhere is there not? There is also something approximating English culture, and British culture, and Irish culture which show some very general differences in the peoples. I reckon with a cheerful and genuinely friendly attitude, any Charlton fans attending the Wexford and Bray matches will have a great time, the only problem might be mutual understanding of accents!
  • Yes feelings run deep. I have never blamed the people of ireland or Ulster for the fact that some IRA coward shot my mate and his mother, it was an individual(lump of shit) who pulled the trigger not a nation of people.

Im sure everyone who goes will have a great time and a real ye-ha.

Bleh... Well for one they're a new club so it would be a nice thing to do and also judging by the opening post they're over the moon to be able to host Charlton and I'm sure they'd be very welcoming towards any ties between clubs. To answer your question there is no difference between the other pre season clubs bar the fact that they're located over the water and any opportunity for the club to spread the name and show the club in a good light should be taken No?
