Salary cap

edited July 2009 in General Charlton
Would a salary cap in Div 1 harm our club or keep it alive?
Apparently there is a salary cap in tier 4 but I don't know much about it.
My hunch is that clubs like Leeds would end up having a lot more to pay their players than say, Brentford.

A lot of us think poor players are paid too much money (12k a week for Hudson!) But we might end up being unable to take a chance on a player, because of the salary cap. Or to keep a player who has had a good season because he will quickly move on upwards to a bigger club.

  • I think it would be a good idea in theory. In practice those who have money will find ways to get around it.
  • Great idea
  • Of course this is where financial logic and football yet again do not match up!. If a team is relegated or promoted or relegated, there are compensation packages that allow clubs to reduce there wage bills through the sky parachute payments. Although this goes some way in cushioning the effects of the inflated wage contracts it is not the entire answer as Charlton and others have found to there cost. Having long term injured and overpayed players on 'nice earners' is the scourge of being relegated.

If contracts mean anything they need to take into account these things, as well as players that are young and progress with the club if they are promoted so that it is seen as a benefit fair to club and player. However according to many club's the players or there advisors will not have it! and such as the power of players today the clubs have little choice but to compete in the farce of paying journeymen footballers salaries way in excess of everyones else's idea of a reasonable wage.

The trouble with clubs like Man city, and others is that they distort the market for the whole football league, with a live today, I am alright jack policy. They are not concerned about the football league, but about getting silverware and instant success! ala Chelski!. Without getting into the rarified argument of wether Etto and others are worth £250,000 a week! ( sorry they are not) this is where FIFA have to play an important role .Professional football is about one thing MONEY, you can buy ability.......is the mantra of clubs today, sadly
  • And the likes of Shelvey, would be gone like a shot... It’s a case of pay the going rate, or put up with the consequences, which most fans don't do very well...

Whilst the money club’s are around, we just have to find a way to join in…
    Any more takeover rumours please?

Just a thought....and it's not a criticism...but had Zabeel have taken over would we be thinking the same as most Citeh fans....in other words... Who gives a f***!
  • Fair point Sound..... I personally do not want to be taken over by someone like Zabeel, It has hardly worked at Man city has it for all there squillions they are no better than West Ham, and Mark Hughes must be under tremendous pressure.

The trouble with rich Arabs,/Americans/Russians etc is they understand money and investment but do they really give a toss about the 'club'. Are they not the preserve of rich fans 'toys'. To me and I appreciate I am in a minority, probably even a small minority is that I support Charlton, because I was born in Charlton, grew up in Charlton etc etc.....If I had wanted to support a winning team I would have opted for Spurs, West Ham, Arsenal like my brother has and did, heaven knows there were few of us who seemed to back in the early 60s. Of course I would welcome investment, and of course we need it. ( desperatly) step forward Richard Branson, ( he is not supporting f1 next year) but not so a rich business consortium can buy us, move us to the dome, and play in yellow to represent there brand colours!. Sorry not for me, how shall I put it ' not the Charlton way' or should I say my way to be honest..........I know it is a contradiction in many ways, but then supporting Charlton is as well.......
