Paul Williams in his first spell with us in the Shithurst Park days.
Willo could really shift.
Apparently he used to get his remarkable energy from eating vast amounts of sweets just before kick off - he swore the sugar rush and E numbers gave him an edge.
There was a spell in the 1988-9 season when we had John Humphrey, Micky Bennet and Paul Williams together, all three were really quick. With Morts pulling the strings, there was some real excitement there for a while.
Newton was fast, as was Rufus. Benty (D) was like lightning, I wonder if he was one of those that was "too quick for his body", given the injuries he seemed to get. Rommedahl was as quick as anyone I've seen but delivered so little.
Over the first six yards, where it really matters, I give you Sir Derek Hales.
Cant disagree there Len in this league or the championship, but we had him for all our premiership life when he was just not good enough or fit enough!!

Rommers for me every time. I'm in a minority but I thought he was the right player at the wrong time for us. Mike Kenning is a good shout too. But a very good player has speed with balance and touch too and that has to be Claus Jensen.

Just a shame he never had the ball with him.
Benty was electric though - especially against Birmingham at home when he made up about 30m on Melchiot - that was hilarious.
We've had plenty of quick players, but not many 'lightning quick' ones.
called Paul Hince.
He was lightening quick, but quite often he'd over run the ball.
Made a cracking start scoring 3 or 4 goals in his first half a dozen matches and then just lost any impact - seeming to fade away. Then went to Bury.
After his playing career was over, he became a reporter in Manchester and wrote a book:
"Memories : . . . of a Failed Footballer & a Crap Journalist"
Linky - Paul Hince memoirs
Apparently it's a good read on the inside of football, written in a poignant and humourous way.
Charlton behind the scenes content.
Couldn't f**kin finish though!

Good shout.
Mike Kenning could outstrip any defender.
Seeing him "skin" Ashley Cole time and again really was a joy to watch!
But when he came back to Charlton a few years later, he would have made Grant Basey look pacy.
No one yet mentioned Shaun Newton?
Newts was all power and pace, even if lacking a little bit of nous.
Shame he was a bit of a Dracula
Beat me by 52 seconds!:-)
;o)

Can't argue with that. But, he was a youngster......forever!
and bloody useless with it
I'm struggling to think of a better striker than Lisbie on our books at the moment, last season or the season before come to that!
agree there
**sigh's heavily and shakes head in disbelief**
Some sense of humour you've got there, Valley Mac, lol
Arsenal/ Newcastle had Super Mac.
Our Hughie was known amongst my crowd as ...... Plastic Mac.
Redeeming feature: He worked his socks off most of the time, despite being not unduly blessed with talent.
And he scored the 1st goal against the Spuds in the 2nd minute, when we thumped them 4-1 and Flash grabbed his hat-trick.
Doh, crap, wrong thread!
