Glad he has lost weight but I have to ask the question how on earth is a professional sportsman playing regular Championship level football under the watchful eye ! of manager, coaches and fitness coaches able to be at least a stone overweight !!!!!!!!!!!! FFS no wonder we were relegated if thats the attention to detail Charlton can be judged by. Imho its a disgrace.
I'm reminded of the time that the fitness coach we used at my old County League club insisted on a pre-season weigh-in for each of the players, with individual targets being set for weight loss by the end of pre-season training.
One of the lads managed to sneak onto the scales at the first weigh-in with a fire extinguisher hidden about his person (it can be done). Needless to say, the coach seemed fairly impressed with the impact of pre-season training on him.

[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]SHG chill man lol We will win the world this year so it's fine that he's slimmed down!
You are right in one respect Dazz but it irks me that a highly paid professional sportsman can get away with being a stone too fat. No excuse for him or Charlton coaching staff imho.
[cite]Posted By: Scoham[/cite]Probably had a target to reach set by the fitness staff. If the OS was accurate, he weighed about 14 and a half stone.
If that's right, he was fair bit overweight - 14.5 stone is the top end of my ideal weight range and I'm 6'4". It can't be a good thing for a GK either, what with his job being 95% about agility.
Good on him for knuckling down and getting the weight off though, especially off his own back in the close season. Hopefully this will help with his shot stopping, which is probably a bit a weakness in his game.

Agreed 100%. How the feck can a 23 year-old who is a professional athlete and training/playing six days per week be a stone (at least) overweight? What on earth was Elliott eating/drinking and who was advising him? Amongst the huge backroom staff did we have nobody to advise him on his diet? Ridiculous.

In fairness to Parkinson, he did say quite early on in his time as number 1 that he wasn't entirely happy with the player's fitness and they moved pretty quickly to get a new fitness bod in. It's harder to radically change a players fitness mid season like that because there has to be a balance between getting/keeping them fit but also not burning them out for match day - that's why pre-season is so important so hopefully we'll see the Sports Scientist's influence more cleraly next season... hopefully.

Fair enough EA, but my point is how can a 23 year-old footballer (albeit a goalkeeper) be training/playing (ie being very physically active) for two hours per day six days per week and STILL be at least a stone overweight?
What on earth was Elliott eating/drinking? He must have been burning a lot of calories at training but then replacing them with a truckload of shit with whatever he ate and drank.
I like Rob but he is a lucky boy to have gotten away with that - a lot of clubs would have shown him the door.
It's a fair point Orms, can't deny it. All I can suggest is he eats too many pies and has a propensity to put on weight - we all know some find it easier to keep off the pounds than others.
All the same, it's another little glimpse at the generally poor levels of player discipline that Pardew allowed to fester.
[cite]Posted By: w/sladeaddick[/cite]Well done Rob, all that time spent training on holiday has paid off. Personally I would rather have spent two weeks lazing in the sun!
Thats the problem. Seems he spent the previous 50 weeks doing that !
While we`re at it. We should ask Rob how he actually acheived his loss. If it was exercise then he obviously wasn`t doing enough before and if it was cutting out the pies then he was obviously eating too much before. Either way its still a disgrace imho.

I am going to have to hit up an even more intense excercise regime now with all the stick i'm getting on the slowest clife player thread...

Seems he has. Agree he should never have been allowed to get overweight in the first place but could say the same for Reid.
New Sports scientist seems to be getting the players under heavy, heavy manners as we say in Bromley.
Norvern monkeys eat a lot of pies and he probably got sucked into that lifestyle and piled on the pounds as a result.
Wasn't that what Peter Garland said after he'd had a spell up at Sunderland or somewhere ....?
