Ray Tumbridge

Nothing on the OS, but according to Chicago Addicks blog he passed away last Saturday.
Played for Charlton in the 70's but was mostly understudy to Phil Warman.

Shook me to the core, because Ray was in the year below me at Abbey Wood Comp.
Not a friend at all ,but I do remember him well from school, and one of my closest friends played alongside him for local team Londinium.
Kind of hits home when it's one of your comtempories and at no real age.

I imagine he'll have left a family. Sad.

RIP fellah.

  • Blimey, I remember Ray Tumbridge playing for Charlton in our Third Division days around 1973.
    Left back, he was.

    RIP
  • Sad news. I remeber watching him play both for us and for Dartford.

    RIP
  • RIP Ray...remember you well with your long flowing hair, which was of course very much the fashion in those days.
Only a regular for about one season but he didn't let us down, a tidy left full back....just looked him up in The Valiant 500....He was only 54.
His league playing days were over at the age of only 21 when Andy Nelson took over....but he went on to play many a game for Gravesend & Northfleet.
  • Really sad, saw him many times playing for Dartford.

    RIP
  • RIP

And it was cut shorter the following season and he played less games and yes oggy it was the 3rd division, we came 3rd behind blackburn and plymouth, remember him, RIP.
  • Very sad, I remember him well. A player of modest ability but a real trier.

    R.I.P.
  • Just old enough to remember him playing at the Valley in the early seventies.

I seem to remember Ray playing in the team that won 5-0 in the FA Cup down at Tonbridge. Not an all time hero but someone that I remember from that era.

    RIP
  • I remember him playing back in about '73

    R.I.P.
  • Remember him well. Charlton were really on the floor in that period, following relegation in '72, but at least all the players used to give it their best back then. Ray was one of them. Theo was starting to rebuild at that time and over the next season or two players like Killer, Paddy Powell and Mike Flanagan all became regulars.

    R.I.P. Ray.
  • Like most on this thread I grew up watching the likes of Ray.

    R.I.P
  • One of my early supporting days player only a year younger than me. I was at the Tonbridge game - finding the link in the names humouress - well I was only young .. reminds one of ones own mortality, anyone know the circumstances.

    RIP
  • "It is with deep regret that the Club announces the death of former player Ray Tumbridge. Ray was a stylish left back, but above all a really decent guy, and a true gentleman. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning, he had been seriously ill for some time. Our deepest sympathies go to his family at this difficult time."

    From the Dartford website yesterday.
  • On the OS now.
  • Yes, remember him well: he came into the team whenever Phil Warman was injured. Very sad news,RIP Ray.
  • I think Geoff Billingsley will be going along to the funeral on behalf of the FF to pay his respects

RIP Ray...remember you well and was dissapointed when you slip down into non league....you were better than that.
