[cite]Posted By: The Equaliser[/cite]Remember Bobby Robson coming to Selhurst ( late 89) , probably had nothing else to do.....to supposedly watch Johnny H and Paul Williams for a upcoming England squad...John didnt get selected even though he was much better then Gary Stevens, the England rightback at the time.Willo got in the B squad.
Remember the Wilson lad, got a couple of goals on loan.
I wrote a letter to Bobby Robson telling him about the virtues of johnny Humphries(not only as a player but as a human being) and suggested to him that he would make a very fine international in every sense of the word both as a player and representative of our country.
Amazingly he wrote back and told me that John 'would' have been selected for the B squad but as he had picked up an injury just as the squad was being selected he sadly had to be left out.I gave the letter to John a few years ago for his personal use and safekeeping....his face lit up like a beacon and he was quite chuffed I'm pleased to say.
A very very nice fella is our John and he is of course at The Valley for every home game (together with three or four other old pros) hosting the corporate hospitality.....Just had a thought...... I wonder if they will all be with us next season....part of the furniture those guys?
I was always a big fan of Paul - not least of all because his non league manager at the time before he signed was a family friend and spoke highly of him before he joined us and, as others have said, he became a very good player of his type and an integral part of the team that Lennie got performing miracles really. Woodford Town I believe it was.

That would be (I think) David Wilson, we had him on loan in 1991/92 and he scored against the Spanners at the Old Pen.
