Kelly Youga - centre half extraordinaire

Discuss!

I was mightily impressed with him on sunday - admittedly against a weak forward line.

My theory is that he is busier and more involved when in the middle so less prone to concentration lapses - whereas in the left back slot he can be a bit of a daydreamer.

Maybe Parky has stumbled across something there!!

Comments

  • He did well and is quite powerful which helps, could he do it consistently though? It was only a very poor Norwich side.

Definitely useful back up to play centre back in League One at least.

Also played there against Yeovil in the League Cup and I think he also did ok that game.
  • Maybe Youga and Fortune in the middle next year!
  • Youga performances since March have been much improved, looks more like a footballer now instead of headless chicken.
  • I like him, strong and looks more reliable every time I see him, plus his dreads make him look like predator when he plays :D
  • Was talking about this after the game actually, he played really well there although Norwich were woeful so he wasn't tested much. I think he might struggle against a big target man though, same as when we had Matt Holland back there.
  • Did well and has strength but I think he might get caught in possesion a bit to often for my liking.

  • Kelly was top class on Sunday ....... but I just can't lose this image of him
  • wasn't that impressed. Lost by Lee for the first goal but difficult to switch like that mid-game.

Was aggressive and decisive and won a lot in the air. OK but nothing special on the day.
  • Clearly the next Player of the Year 2009/10

Probably but at least he has a bit of pace to get himself out of it.

I think he'll be used as a left back anyway, it's seen as his best position.

Fortune will go in the summer, he must still be on Premier League wages. Can't see Fortune sticking around to be honest. Whenever I've seen Youga this season, he's been truly woeful. Granted he played OK on Sunday, but Norwich gave up after 30 mins and were so blunt upfront anyone could have played centre half in the second half. Been really dissappointed with him, especially as Pardew kept hyping him up after his loan spell at Scunthorpe. Hopefully a clean slate in League 1 will help him, but far too many times he's been beaten too easily, outmuscled and too many clumsy, basic defensive errors.
  • Pardew damaged him - Parky has done his best with rectifying it.
  • There has clearly been a marked improvement with him, seems alot more composed, however when ever the ball comes out to the left you do always fear for the worst.

Has looked ok at CB when had to be there but wouldn't want him as one of our first team CB's, in emergency fair nuff
  • I think he's got a lot, lot better over the last few months. He looks a good defender now.
  • He is much improved, mainly since Ward has been in the team. Left Back is his position but we've seen him at centre half before and we know just like Matt Holland he can play there in an emergency.

As we had an emergency all season perhaps he should have been playing there....
  • I was pretty well refreshed on sunday. But, Youga is one of the worst players I've ever seen. I honestly think I've seen non league wingers who would do him all ends up. No way does he have the composure or discipline to play in the centre of defence. No way!

With all due respect, you appear to have a very limited understanding of football.
  • When has he shone this year? Or last? Or the one before? How many times has he let us down and looked like a headless chicken? What does he bring to the team? How many crosses get in off his side? One decent enough game against a rubbish team doesn't change that. Having said that feel free to quote my comments back in twelve months if he has transformed into a defensive collosus:)
  • He had a good run after he came back from Scunthorpe.

He was one of the players that was 'broken' due to lacking confidence. He's making less mistakes now and playing ok.

Fair point about his crossing. He doesn't cross because he's pretty awful at it.

  • I think he is a real talent, spoiled by his own view of his talent. He appears over-confident which may be his way of trying to manage a lack of it. I think he needs responsibility to control him and keep him focussed. On Sunday he seemed to want to help Solly and take him under his wing. It was no surprise to me that he gave a really effective performance (despite maybe losing Lee for the goal).

Youga's made more appearances for Charlton at centre-half than your old mate Corey Gibbs, Henry
