Toffs

edited May 2009 in General Charlton
In light of this season's dreadful kit, which I hope gets replaced for the 2009-10 season, I've been looking at getting an old retro style Charlton shirt but can't decide which one to get. I just wanted to know what shirt people prefered out of the following and what number would you get on the back:

1. 1971-72 shirt as worn by Dickie Plum
2. 1965 shirt as worn by Billy Bonds
3. 1972-73 shirt as worn by Keith Peacock

  • If it was me I'd get the 1965 shirt (2) in fact I have been thinking about getting that one, I'd probably get number 10 on the back, don't know why just seems like all the best players wear that one.
  • My favourite kit will always be the mostly white with the red flashes worn in the mid sixties. I know this is a sacrilige to most fans who think the Charlton kit should always be a predominantly red shirt. But it is the shirt worn when I first started going to the Valley and there is something so clean and neat about it and it always reminds me a bit of the Ajax kit and who can ever forget Ajax in their pomp in the sixties and early seventies? The link below has some nice photos of this strip.

  • Did we drop the "Athletic" for the 71-72 season? the Toffs shirt says CFC
  • I always liked the black Redbus away kit.

Not quite as old as that, but I have a load of inherited Charlton Programmes where the shirts had CFC on them, I thought I was seeing things.

The 86-88 and 98-00 shirt's were my favourite, the club going for decent manufacturers adidas and lecoq sportif. This year's kit sucked lemons the other awful kit being the 93/4 effort, a pattern clearly emerging regarding the quality of the company manufacturing the kit methinks.
In answer to the question though, any of those classic Charlton strips would be a great addition to your collection.
  • The 1940s red one is my fave
  • my old man has the 1940s fa cup one, lovely shirt very heavy tho more like a rugby top bu classsy the badge is pukka.

the questions never come up before, cant honestly remember a CFC badge
  • Well, this very old git vaguely recalls variations of the red/red & white shirts over the years, but without club logos until the late '60s when a version of the 'round badge' appeared, i.e similar to the one we know today. This was followed by the white 'fist and sword' in the early '70s. In the relegation year of '71/'72 I think we had plain red shirts but I could be wrong. The 'fist' was followed by that odd sort of italic version of CAFC written downwards on the shirt then we went back to the round badge which i know was worn at Carlisle in'81 and ever since , I believe.
  • I've been wearing our old kits all season. I've hated this seasons strip both home and away. I've also noticed a few more wearing the old kits. The retro thing is back in, R.E: see England kit.

That's the one that I favour at the moment. I think it's because of the badge?

We were the Robins up to about 1966......Ive got a pennant with three Robins on it circa 1964...albeit previously there was one Robin.....We became the Valiants about 1967......thats what I always knew as our nickname.....dont think many people referred to us as the Addicks until the 90's, albeit we all knew the fish and chip legend
