relegation could be the making of charlton

watching the game yesterday the thought struck home that there's a wealth of talent breaking through that probably wouldn't normally get a chance at the same time in such numbers and yet by doing so the bond they will form will be a lot stronger than the usual majority team of journeymen/mercenaries that is the basis for most teams...the only other time that springs to mind of a team of youngsters coming through at the same time is the moan utd one of becks, scholes, gigg, nevilles...wet spam nearly got there with lampard, cole, fredinand etc but finances took care of that one...

and talking of finances, a restructuring (albeit forced) of the clubs wage bill and finances in this market might turn out to be a blessing in disguise...it wouldn' surprise me if a few names start to disappear from the league tables in the coming months...its happening everywhere else, so it cant be a matter of if it will happen to the football industry but when...

  • yeah our finances will dictate that if the youngsters are any good they will be sold and if they're not that great they will be in our team helping us achieve nothing in the third tier ....
i like your romantic sentiments but our only decent youngster, who looks like he could play at the top level , is shelvey and the rest well they'll be with us in the lower reaches ;-(

once upon a time i'd agree with you, but the way things are going any youngster that's in the first team at the club he's at, whether at charlton or elsewhere, should stay put until he know's he got a good chance of being a regular in the first team of the club he's going to...playing in front of 10 -15k at charlton in the first division and geting a mention in the papers and tv everyweek is a million times better than playing in front of one man and his dog for a premiership's stiffs and everybody forgetting your name...

There's still going to be more coming through in the next few years. How do we know there isn't another Shelvey in the u14s at the moment ;-)

We've got a couple of players in the England u16 squad, Shelvey and Solly have shown you have to be a good player at their age enough to get into that squad.

There is another Shelvey on the Charlton production line. JJ's cousin...
  • ...... but not his Uncle ?

    ;o)
  • How old is he? Any good?

    ............

I seem to remember thinking the same about this time two seasons ago...

Financial necessity means we have to make a virtue out of relegation. I doubt that the class of 2008/9 are going to be mainstays of next season's first team but we should see several of them in around the match day squad and it'll be down to them to take the opportunity when it comes.
  • I think we have a number of players who will find league 1 to their liking. In addition to the youngsters that played Stuart Fleetwood (although he missed a penalty) has been on loans in the lower leagues all season. We have players who know this league and players suited to playing in it, something we didn't have when we were relegated from the premiership.

what with the santanta situation, speculation about liverpool, it will be interesting to see if some clubs do fall over under a weight of debt they cant service or refinance...

Dean Sinclair is one that could turn out to be useful once he's fit. Unlucky for him that he looks to be missing pre-season. Should mean he'll still be here though.

One of Pardew's most bizarre and pointless signings could turn out to be good for us after 2 years!
