New Grounds

edited May 2009 in General Charlton
Summer planning can begin in earnest now.Eighteen of our opponents are now confirmed with Norwich or Barnsley to be added to the list tomorrow.

It will the end of the month, after the Wembley play-off weekend, before we know which three out of MK Dons,Millwall,Leeds & Scunthorpe & which one of Bury,Gillingham,Rochdale & Shrewsbury will complete the list.

Adams Park, home of Wycombe Wanderers, will be a new venue for Charlton to try to get three points from.Destinations as far apart as Exeter,Carlisle & Hartlepool can be tapped into the sat nav.

Any you are anticipating with particular relish?

  • there's a few grounds in there I've not been to. problem is i have no desire to do it and that saddens me. Maybe I;ll get the bug back over the summer.
  • I looked at the League One and it (no disrespect to the teams in there) makes you relise how far we have fallen.
  • Well maybe i'm different, but i'm just as excited at Charlton being a small club again as i was with us being a so called big club.

I just want to see us having a season again like our promotion one from the Championship where we are a winning club again. And i'm really not to bothered at what level that is at
  • didn't make me so much think about 'how far we have fallen' as.... look how many of these teams we have played in the league since I have supported Charlton (started in 86/87)

    Milton Keynes Dons - never
    Leeds United - prem
    Millwall - 'prem'
    Scunthorpe United - div 2
    Tranmere Rovers - div 2
    Southend United - div 2
    Huddersfield Town - div 2
    Oldham Athletic - 'prem'
    Bristol Rovers - div 2
    Colchester United - div 2
    Walsall - div 2
    Leyton Orient - never
    Swindon Town - 'prem?'
    Brighton - ???
    Yeovil Town - never
    Stockport County - div 2
    Hartlepool United - never
    Carlisle United - never

so four teams that we have played in the top div in the last 20-odd years..... and most of the others have been played in the 2nd tier

this highlights to me that, to everybody else, we are nothing special down there...

we are mostly just special to ourselves...

plenty of other teams down there know perfectly well how teams drop through divisions.....

    COME ON YOU REDS!!!

I think next season will be fascinating. I glanced at The Premiership results a moment ago & realised just how little interest i have had in that competition since we departed the scene a coupleof seasons back. The Premiership is a is a foregone conclusion, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea & it has been for years now*. It is a non-event unless you follow one of the bore four, I really don't give two hoots about it. Roll on our new life in Divison 3, one thing for sure I have not a clue who will win that league, even who will place in the top 6 - a refreshing change from the Premiership nonsense.

    * in the last 10 seasons - 36 out of 40 of the top 4 finishers have been from these four :(
  • I'm with Smudge on this one, what a fan asks of his team is that it is successful or at least competitive. As Oakster correctly points out, unless you support one of the big four you are never going to win the Prem. You could even argue that you have to follow Man Utd or Chelsea to have a chance of that.

The sad thing is that with the present squad Charlton should have been more than capable of challenging for promotion in the Championship.Much has been made of 'doing a Leicester' & the scoring exploits of Matty Fryatt.Fryatt's scored just twice in 30 Championship outings last season! The huge contribution made by battering ram target man Steve Howard tends to be overlooked. An Iwelumo replacement is a must in the summer.

Leicester's springboard in midfield is Matt Oakley, hardly a world beater.Players such as Matt Spring will be accomplished performers at League 1 level as he proved at Leeds. If we can keep hold of Bailey for instance we would be very strong even allowing for our reduced financial streams.

If managed correctly & with a tad of good luck with injuries,we could & should have the sort o season that Smudge is dreaming of.Eventually, you will find your level,Charlton have fallen beyond theirs. The comeback starts now.
  • 4 new grounds for me next season.
    exeter, carlisle, hartlepool and yeovil.
plus 1 more if either shrewsbury or rochdale go up in the play offs.
  • Five new clubs away:
MK, Yeovil, Harltepool, Exeter & Carlisle, also 1 more if either shrewsbury or rochdale go up in the play offs.
Plus new grounds at Bristol Rovers & Brighton.

I have a minmum of 8 for next season :- Exeter, Wycombe, Huddersfield, Bristol R, Colchester, Yeovil, Brighton, Hartlepool.

Always look on the bright side of life :-)

With a bit of I could make 10 new grounds if MK Dons stay down and one of Rochdale or Shrewsbury win the play offs :-)

And I'm really looking forward to it, assuming that we're gonna be near the top. TBF it won't look as attractive if we're still struggling.

BTW possible 10 new grounds, but only 7 new clubs (been to Bristol R, Colchester and Brighton's previous grounds).
  • i am really up for next year just want this season done with and the fixtures to come out ( does anyone know when they are out?).

I am looking forward to loads of away games espically, Southend, Col u, Leyton o whihc our all closer than the valley to me.

What you doing on here ? You should be in the Oak for 11.30.
  • we don't ever have any chance of winning the FA cup but i'll get more excited about playing in that than the johnstones paint chuff....

exactly but this new league may excite some but for me it will be a chuff standard of football with probably our worst side in my 33 years of watching charlton unless we win promotion......
  • I've got somewhere to stay in Weston Super Mare for when I go Bristol Rovers and Exeter.

Defo doing Brentford, Wycombe, Leyton Orient, Southend, Brighton, Colchester and Gills (if come up)

  • For me......

Milton Keynes Dons - never, probably never will.
Leeds United - Done, prem / play off

    Scunthorpe United - Done 07-08
Tranmere Rovers - Done, "oh no, not another Friday night game at tranmere!"
Southend United - Done "loads of trips to the seaside"
Huddersfield Town - Done "only ever done the McAlpine"
Oldham Athletic - Done, how could you ever forget the Andy Jones miss on the astroturf!
Bristol Rovers - Curiously, only at Twerton Park
Colchester United - Done layer Road but not the Community Stadium
    Walsall - Only Fellows Park
    Leyton Orient - Done
Swindon Town - Done, I love the magic roundabout
Brighton - Done Goldstone and Withdean, hope the new stadium is ready soon
    Yeovil Town - never
Stockport County - Done, used to have a good fanzine in the 80's "hit the bar"
    Hartlepool United - never
Carlisle United - Again, never been to Carlisle, missed the promotion parties. Lennie Lawrence is wearing my mates scarf in the famous promotion picture where he's being shouldered.

    So.....

Quite a few new ones for me to do. Could be a good season!
  • New ones for me next season will be

Nope, I plan to go and support my own team.

    Good stuff RedGod.
Just the sort of positivism I want to hear (and not a word about dumping Parky ;-)
