Away Support

edited April 2009 in General Charlton
Talking to a work colleague yesterday (first time I've seen him since we won at St Mary's) who is a Southampton fan and after taking the piss for about an hour we got to talking about other football matters. I asked him about the Crystal game on Monday and how many they brought down, he said hardly any and nowhere near the amount we did. Just shows you, even though we are bottom and (almost) relegated we still take more away than Crystal!

Comments

  • except its not true i'm afraid. They took 600 more, though its hardly surprising giving our position and away form.
  • Oh it is true, this bloke is the biggest anorak going and if he says it then it is true
  • Not to do with away support but was talking to a Nigel here at work, and apparently for one of their recent home games (might have been Coventry) the attendance was announced as 12000 and something, but the actual number in the ground was less than 9k.
  • every club we have played this season has brought more fans to us than we have brought to them.......
i think our last chance is to bring more than the 690 derby brought to us to stop this statistic....
    blackpool we took 321
    cardiff 572
    norwich 705
  • Where do you get these figures oohaahmortimer and how many did we take to Southampton?

matchday programs not got the birmingham one so didn't see the numbers at soton (they brough 1996 to us)
  • afka did a breakdown at the end of last season when we were riding high.

    this is the link.
  • I don't know about anyone else but I think next season our away surport will double?

Loads of new grounds quite a few not that far away and hopefully a better season?

I was talking to a QPR fan and he said when they were in division 3 they took an ave of 1500 every away game and towards the end of the season when they went up they were taking 3-4000 away!

Lets hope we are in the same boat this time next season?

I think you'd find those figures reversed if they were bottom and we were mid-table.
  • Well, I'm surprised that we only had 886 at Southampton it seemed a lot more. Do they include pay on the day because a lot of us did that?
  • Unless we start of really well and are top 3 all season I still think we will be lucky to be taking more than 400 -500 away next season, new grounds or not. Swansea was a new ground this year and only shows a small increase on other saturday away games.

Our away support is p**s poor and don't see it improving next season just because we are in a different league and visiting new grounds.
  • I don't get the whole new ground thing, most of them look the same! It's the old grounds which are bigger draws for me, I feel sorry for anyone who didn't get to see Charlton play at Ninan Park, a great old ground in a great city!

    *waits for anti-welsh/cardiff replies*
  • Agreed, felt embarrassed this season not only by the team but the support.
  • FOD - I think when people say new grounds, they mean grounds they have not been to (new grounds for them), as oppose to newly built grounds.

Im of the same opinion as you. You can't beat old grounds. Gald i went to Cardiff this season, for that reason alone. next year will see a fair few old grounds (new grounds for me).

I'll agree with you about Southampton. We definitely took more than 1600 on Monday, quite sure they're not counting their tickets on the day properly because it was effectively sold out.

We didn't take 32 to Leeds either, can quite clearly see about 300 in the highlights of the game with their heads in their hands when they stuffed 4 past us!
