Alex Song tonight

we had the Arsenal game live on Czech TV. Anyone else see it? I thought Alex Song was imperious. Always thought he was going to make it. Just coming to terms with how it seems only yesterday that he was wearing our red shirt...

Didn't see it, but I thought he would come good. A lot of it was just consistency with him, though to be fair he was playing in a struggling team under a lot of pressure. He's never going to be a top player and star for Arsenal, but he should be a useful squad player for them if not a very good player for someone else if he leaves.

Was one of the many examples of Pardew seeing the potential in a player, but he couldn't play to it often enough.
  • He was very young when he came to us. 18 I think so it was part of his learning curve.

Good luck to him and hope he does well.

When he first came to us several Arsenal fans that I work with said that we were welcome to him as he was never going to make it with them. Funnily enough they're not saying that now.

definitely done better than i thought he would , was a bit too crab like for us imo but at arsenal the proper footballing philosophy has been drummed into him and he looks much improved......
he's very good but i don't think he'll be a regular in a 'successful' arsenal side (if you know what i mean)

I know where you're coming from but he is the very type of player that Arsenal have been missing - someone who just breaks up the opposition attack, gives protection to the back four and allows the rest of the midfield to push forward.

In fact, Arsenal are unbeaten in the last 20 games Song has played for them so he must be doing something right.
  • or something wrong if you think they should be burned on Blackheath !

Maybe this has changed after last night, but at least until very recently Song has not been very popular with a lot of arsenal fans. He's pretty much been there designated scape goat - think Danny Butterfield amongst addicks.
  • imperious against a poor vILLAREAL SIDE.

Let's see him perform next agaisnt the big boys.

Don't want to rain on his perfomrance because he was excellent but the next two games will be different in many many ways to hwat he's just played.

That's because they are Arsenal fans and actually know jack s**t about the real football world.
  • Nobby Stiles and David Batty were hardly the most gifted of footballers but they were an integral part of trophy winning teams and earned the right for others to play. Arsenal fans should, perhaps, understand that it is the sum of the total because 10 Henry's in a side win you nothing.

  • Sign him up Parky
  • Sure, Villareal didnt look much last night. But Arsenal did.

But I found myself thinking...if only. If only he'd come to us the season before when Curbs was still there. Curbs could have snapped him up to play the Smertin role - and would have done too, he's a Curbs player in the positive sense. I've seen him play centre-back too.

It just seems unreal now that what I'm talking about could have been realistic , so recently.

This isn't helping really, is it?
  • i don't think Arsene would have sold him to be honest.

Why's everyone picking on me? What have I ever done to you : - )

Not really, but let's take off the rose tinted specs for a minute and remember that Curbs did preside over quote a few turkeys and failures - particularly in midfield. Smertin and Murphy come immediately to mind. For all his successes a lot of 'big name' players came to us and either fell away or left as worse players, especially later in his temure.
  • That's true I always blame Temure Ketsbaia.

In regards of Alex Song we haven't had that kind of defensive energy from anyone since, with Holland being positionally cute they were a good mix.
