can the board do the right thing?

edited April 2009 in General Charlton
so people this is going to be a very big summer for our board to show their commitment to the club and that they do have the ability to make decisions. Not for 1 min am I have a pop at the board.

I think they have done well with the pricing of tickets for next year (£50 kids ones). you compare this to a club down the road from me that are going to be charging almost 4 times this for div 4 football.

they have a big decision to make on the manager and management team.

a bigger decision will be the budget for players and who we can keep.

so what are your views?

  • not for 1 minute are u having a pop but you are questioning their commitment which is UNQUESTIONABLE. No one should question their commitment - question their decisions granted and rightly so.

Think finances will dictate a lot of decisions.
  • the board are committed to selling for the right price ,if it comes along , which will hopefully benefit charlton athletic
  • they're hurting too.
  • They had big decisions to make when they got rid of Dowie and Pardew, so i wouldnt hold you breath, the club has to invest in proven players in this league, the fact of the pricing of £50 is a good thing for the young fans but for the club as well, parents have to bring the kids so they get sales there, people cannot complain when they roll out cheap prices next season, looks good for gates, but are we invensting in future support or just papering over the cracks ?
  • I think it depends on expectations. If anybody expects them to keep all or the majority of players we have now then they will be disappointed but if they can persuade the likes of Bailey, Racon, Hudson, Shelvey and even Ward to stay with us then I think that will show commitment and give us the nucleus of a side that could achieve promotion. I also think commitment is a two way thing. For myself I am mildly optimistic that we can keep some of our better players but that will most probably be at the expense of signing new ones.
  • In many people's eyes, a football club board can never do the right thing.
  • I know it will be hard but they must resist all temptation to sell the betters players unless silly money is involved, ie £5m for Shelvey and £ 2m for Bailey.

We will be losing quite a few players in any case due to contracts running out and unless Shelvey, Bailey, Racon, Semedo at al actually put in a transfer request they must stay.

It is a downward spiral selling your better players for peanuts and then replacing them with inferor ones - that is the main reason we are in his mess - going back even to Parker, Murphy and more recently Andy Reid. Non of these were adequately replaced. Then in the summer we sold Ilwelumo and replaced him with Burton and Kandol. Jerome Thomas was replaced by loan signings etc etc

Sadly I'm not holding my breath that any of those will stay next season.

The midfielders will get better offers and Hudson and Ward are too expensive I suspect.

Non-playing winger Christiansen £5k a week. Given that fact what is a regular like Hudson on and Ward has come from one of the richer Championship sides so is also on a decent wedge I expect.

Hope you are right. Keep the players you name and there is a decent side for this division let alone the one below.

I agree about the commitment being two way which is why I'm renewing despite the three poor seasons that have just gone and that we are going to be in League 1.
  • I hope I am right but have my doubts on one or two of them. I too shall renew.

    Glad to hear it.
  • The Mother in Law to be reckons I am wasting my money on football - so now I am definitely going to renew!

Caught between a rock and a hard place - a choice between spending Saturday afternoon shopping with the wife and mother-in-law,
or watching Charlton stutter to a 0-0 draw with Northampton.

Of course, in that light, even a dismally dull draw with Nobody Town has got to be the better option.
