Google & Advertising

edited April 2009 in General Charlton
I read recently that Google were to aim advertising at the sites individuals used most and I wondered what they would target at CL users (the Samaritans came to mind).Well, it looks like they've started doing it and I can bid for 'Charlton' items from E-Bay. Will Cl benefit from this arrangement, if not I think it should!

  • They keep sending me adverts for tissues, but i'm not sure it's my CL patronage that has prompted them to do so.
  • Today it's the 'Kent For Men' gel brush for thick long hair! I'm well past 60 ffs what bloody good is that ? Not to mention the 'Kent Cosmetics Flair for Women Spray'! What's going on?
  • Delete cookies regularly to prevent this sort of online tracking?
  • Ah, right, cookies eh? I think we've had a conversation before about my lack of IT skills and knowledge Darren, so which button do I press? Today's special is Life-Flo Pregenolone Cream! It's O.K, my clever clogs daughter has sorted it (for now). Thanks.
  • i dont suppose anyone listens to smooth FM do they?

I nearly wet myself when an advert came on for "its my body they're my breasts" or something like that. such a crap advert about breast fixing.
  • March51, where exactly are you seeing these ?

What page are you on when you get these ? Are they showing as pop ups ?
  • For cookie deletion if you click on the start button and on the list of icons displayed one should be the Internet Explorer icon if thats what you are using,
right click on the Internet Explorer Icon and
from the new menu displayed highlight the internet properties and left click.
This will then display another set of options -
you should see the general tab and in the middle of that new screen there is a section called Temporary Internet files option 1 is delete cookies - click on that tab which will delete all of your cookie details.
  • Sorry for the delay chaps, had to do some work! So, AFKA, they appear on the LH side of the screen with the heading; 'Shopper Reports'. They are a series of vertical adverts with photos of the product concerned (at the moment: cookers) and the column is approx. 2 1/2" wide. and each advert 1 1/2" deep They are on whatever page I go to although sometimes the adverts change if I change sites,(in the main I only use CL and Sky movies('cos March Jnr is the Editor and he has to achieve so many hits or something in a month). Some of adverts are geared towards Charlton related products including C. Heston's biography. One of the cookers I can see now is available from Redhill Appliances, 3 miles from chez March! As it happens there was an item on the Home Service tonight concerning targeting, or 'Behaviourable Technology' and it appears the U.K is leading Europe in breaking EU Regs and doing all sorts of things without the web user's permission as well as ignoring data protection regs as well

Thanks Jaire, I'll give it a go!
  • Sounds like someone has downloaded free software/ shareware, and it comes with all this Adware stuff.

I remember wanting to watch a Charlton match on my laptop, you know some satelite jobby with Chinese commentary, clicked on the link and found I'd unwittingly also downloaded something like Zango.

Bottom line, I was inundated with ads like you're getting, March.

It's a sod to wipe off completely but you can deactivated it for a while, before it comes at you again a week later.
  • Thanks OR, that sounds a distinct possibility. But you never know, one day they might try to flog me something I actually want: at the moment it's American fridge/freezers !
