Brum Memories

edited April 2009 in General Charlton
I was thinking about any memorable games against Brum.

One that springs to mind, was a game late in the 1967/8 season

a midweek night game at The Valley , Birmingham were a decent side just off the promotion pace
with some good player including Jim Herriot in goal, Geoff Vowden, Barry Bridges, Ron Wylie and a
long haired Midfielder called Trevor Hockey . Hockey was booed at every touch and Charlton
struggled to contain them but I think finally came out 2-1 winners.

  • Two spring to mind- the last game of 92-93 when Birmingham needed to win to stay up. There we're 28,000 brummies and about 500 of us. They took the lead misway through the 2nd half and they held on- just. I recall Leaburn just putting one wide in the last minute, if that had gone in, we'd never have got out alive. The day was sweetened when we learned that Palace had been relegated.

A year later they won 1-0 again and Barry Fry tore down the touchline in celebration.

The game in 95-96 when we won 4-3 was exciting enough but afterwards the mad Brummies tried to storm the away end but thankfully the stewards somehow kept us at bay- I hadn't seen anything like that until Saturday at Southampton.
  • St Andrews forever will be Leeds !

Remember the 92-93 one well and am sure we were all booing whenever we had a shot, praying we didn't score!!
  • Greg Shields - goooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllll!!!!
  • Remember the 92-93 one. You could see the questioned look on the collective brummy faces as we did a congo on the terraces after we found out about palace.

I seem to remember they stormed the pitch and rushed towards us. Thought it might kick off but all they wanted to do was shake our hands.

Stark contrast to all the other times I've been, including the time they stoned the kids coaches.
  • Are you sure that 92-93 shot was by Leaburn, I remember it being Garland. Was pretty glad that it didn't go in though.

    Easily mixed up!
  • the 92-93 i remember as being paul gorman, but i could have been halucinating at the fear of it going in.

i remember in the early 80's we beat brum 2-1 i think at the valley. i'm sure it was featured on match of the day.
remember 'singing we can see you sneeking out' with ten mins to go, only five mins later they "sneeked" back in to the covered end and the clock terrace. bodies flying everywhere.
  • Matches- not really for me but the match at the end of the 96/7 ( i think) season when Jasper Carrott wound the home "fans" up against us was as scary a walk away from an away match as i have ever had....

I remember about five of them appearing at the second exit from the right -side in the Covered End and giving it "Ci-ty". They lasted about 7 seconds.

Didnt El Kakouri score a 35 yard free kick a couple of years ago.
  • I remember the last game of the season match against them in 92/93. Like others have said Birmingham needed a win to stay up. Seem to remember with Birmingham 1-0 up and minutes remaining Peter Garland nearly scoring with a 30 yard effort.

Can always remember after the game there fans wanting to shake hands with us after the game when you know there would have been a totally different reaction towards us if Peter Garland's effort had gone in and sent them down. Never liked Birmingham and there scum fans. Seem to remember one or two complete knobhead charlton fans even swapping shirts with birmingham fans after the game. Why I don't know.

The game in 95/96 (4-3 win live on the tv) always springs to mind and there scum fans attacking a coach full of Junior Reds. Brave lot.
  • yep leeds in play-off replay a night to remember.
  • Not too long ago, but 03/04 we had a great run, I remember watching us beat Blackburn then Birmingham away, both on Sky. The Birmingham game especially Kiely made some great saves.

Then we had the game at home a few seasons later, Bent scored a good goal, powering past Melchiot I think it was who wasn't slow himself.
  • parker played one of his best ever games that night
