I thought the stuff about the young players was more interesting that saying Jon Jo plays behind the striker.
“Sometimes because the supporters see Jonjo as a midfielder they think it is defensive but it is not, it is as an attacking a formation as we can put out.”
The manager also revealed Tamer Tuna’s impressive form in the reserves had been good enough to propel the young striker into the first team squad for this Saturday’s Valley clash with Birmingham.
However, Parkinson confirmed Svetoslav Todorov would not be involved against the Blues, saying young players who deliver the goods in the reserves will be given their opportunity.
He explained: “Tamer scored two in the week and is going to be with the first team over the weekend.
“He’s in the squad on merit. Last week against Millwall he was excellent and caught all of the staff’s eyes.
“Yesterday he put in a superb performance. He is a clever player with a great touch and he is in the squad on merit.”
When asked if Todorov would have his contract renewed in the summer, Parkinson added: “I wouldn’t like to speak about that before I have had a chance to talk to him.
“I think it is important the youngsters who are playing well for the youth and reserves can see there is a clear path into the first team squad.
“It’s important someone from that group gets rewarded by being involved.
“Scott Wagstaff has come back into form. Chris Solly was in the squad last week and travelled down to Southampton with us and is close to getting an opportunity with us because he has been exceptional in the reserves.
“Out of all the players, Chris has probably been the unluckiest of all the youngsters in terms of getting a game or even getting on the bench.”
The manager also hinted another youngster, Harry Arter, may well end up landing a deal in the summer after his impressive loan spell at Welling came to an end earlier this week.
Arter played in yesterday’s 5-0 reserve demolition of Southampton and Parkinson believes the 19-year-old midfielder has returned a better professional from his time at Park View Road.
The Valley chief said: “He is playing for his future as his contract is up.
“Harry’s been out for 11 months with an injury and we sent him along to Staines because we felt he needed to play games. He then went on trial to a few places to try and find himself a contract because I couldn’t make him any guarantees.
“He wasn’t successful with that but subsequently went out to Welling and he has been outstanding there.
“All the things we have been telling him he needs to improve on he has addressed because the other clubs he has been at have told him the same thing.
[cite]Posted By: Ledge[/cite]but saying jonjo is our gerard is just plain silly
To be fair Ledge i think you've taken his quotes out of context as has the News Shopper. To me, all he's saying is that Shelvey is playing a similar role to Gerrard, he's not exactly comparing them as players or anything.
Well done Tamer, I have known him and his family since he was a dot... Local family, good player been with the team since he was 7. His brother was in my t sons team that played at Northfleet and Gravesend and won the kent cup four years ago. I have followed his progress and seen him a few times over the years, always good to see a local lad have his chance, fingers crossed for him and his family.
Bit confused that there is doubt about Toddy getting a contract !!!!!!! FFS the bloke can`t get near the team now so whats the point of even thinking about a contract.

He'll probably say he's going to see if we can afford to keep Ambrose next, or consider if Weaver is worth another year.
I'll be shocked if any of those 3 stay, no way we can possibly justify their wages in League One for what they will offer.
The argument over the exact wording of the Gerrard comment is nitpicking. Whether he said Shelvey is our Gerrard or that Shelvey can play the Gerrard role ,the comparison is plain and it is both praise and pressure. Nothing wrong with that. I suspect as a talented and ambitious young man, Jonjo needs and responds well to both.
Much better psychology from Parky than his utterly daft comment the other week about how our two most talented players - Shelvey and ZZ - could not play in the same side as they ''replicate'' each other.
On this occassion, well said, Parky, and good journalism by the Newshopper.

He did not say he was giving Toddy a contract he said "“I wouldn’t like to speak about that before I have had a chance to talk to him." Toddy won't get a cotract, but Parky will do the decent thing and tellhim before he announces it to the world.
Good comments from Parky IMO. Nice to see him noticing the kids and if anything it keeps some of the older pro's on their toes as we go into Easter...may as well try and win the next couple of games after all. No probs with saying Jonjo plays in the same role as Gerrard, you would have to be an idiot not to have noticed that as a fan anyway so I don't see it will have added any pressure whatsoever.

Is the FIIIIIISSSHHH chant going to make a comeback?!

Interesting last para.
FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Yep, but nothing wrong with building up his confidence is there?
What Parky says in "playing the same role as Steven Gerrard for Liverpool"
Not the same thing.
To be fair Ledge i think you've taken his quotes out of context as has the News Shopper. To me, all he's saying is that Shelvey is playing a similar role to Gerrard, he's not exactly comparing them as players or anything.
But he's not saying "he's our Gerrard" - that was the headline writer.
He's saying "playing the same role as Steven Gerrard for Liverpool"
Good to see Parkinson is noticing Solly, he will hopefully make his debut this season.
Really good to see Arter has gone out to try and improve his game and earn a contract as well.
He'll probably say he's going to see if we can afford to keep Ambrose next, or consider if Weaver is worth another year.
I'll be shocked if any of those 3 stay, no way we can possibly justify their wages in League One for what they will offer.

I hope Parkinson is not being put under pressure to put Shelvey in the shop window in order to raise funds over the summer.
Apparently he is being thrown in the deep end!.......;o)
Yeah fair point, probably the right way to do it.
I wasn't being completely serious.
