All-time team of Charlton youth

Don't think this has been done before - apologies if so.

What's your all-time team of Charlton youth players who made their professional debut with us?

Here's my suggestion for starters:

Rob Elliott

Mark Penfold
Paul Elliott
Richard Rufus
Anthony Barness

JJ Shelvey
Spotty Parker
Mickey Bennett
Robert Lee

Paul Walsh
Carl Leaburn

    He's a shoe-in for the worst XI we've produced.

  • I guess we're not counting Defoe.

He might be a tad better than Leaburn though...

  • Nobody has suggested Lisbie, who, after the unforgettable hat-trick against Liverpool, must surely be an automatic choice as the second striker after Paul Walsh.

I'd personally choose Paul Williams as the second striker. He joined from non-league so did make his pro debut for CAFC.

    So:

    Tutt

    Brown
    Rufus
    Primus
    Konchesky

    Lee
    Bowyer
    Parker
    Campbell

    Williams
    Walsh

    Subs

    R. Elliott
    P. Elliott
    Minto
    Newton
    Leaburn
  • What about Mortimer, completley incomparable in talent levels to Mickey bennett. I know he was at Fulham but didn't Mortimer play in the FA yotuh cup finalists team? Rob Lee and on the right and Mortimer on the left is the perfect balance, one industrious the other mercurial. Then you can have Newton come in when raw pace is needed.

For me Minto has to be the left back. A player who was outstanding for us in the top league in his teens.
  • Did you know Darren Pitcher scored a winning goal at Blackburn in the FA Cup ?

    oh, you did..............

I wanted to put Morts in (he's one of my all-time favourites), but wasn't sure he played youth football for us. He joined us from Farnborough Town in 1987 according to Wikipedia, but I'm not sure what that proves. If he did play at youth level then I'd definitely agree to swap him for Mickey Bennett.
  • Jason Lee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Better goalscorer than Leaburn, less of a legend
  • I too would have put Morts in my team, but I don't recall him ever playing youth team football for us. We signed him from Farnborough (as Wiki says) and I think he'd had a trial with Fulham before coming to us - from memory he was working in a book shop at the time. Again from memory he went into the first team squad and made his debut in autumn 1987 - perhaps Mark Stuart was injured or suspended?

I like your selection of players most Graham; although as a team I'd probably sacrifice a midfielder (Bowyer) for somebody to play alongside Paul Walsh. Leaburn I guess.
Would like to add Alan Campbell to the subs bench and Richie Bowman to the squad!
  • I know competition is great for places in the back four but Peter Reeves must come into the reckoning somewhere!
  • In my time of watching Charlton:

Elliott (I can't think of any others)

    Brown
    Minto
    Rufus
    Fortune

    Parker
    Bowyer
    Lee
    Newton

    Leaburn

    parker
    newton

    leaburn

    pitcher
    bennett
  • eliott - only keeper we've brought through in my time i think

    .........

    There's also Darren Randolph.
  • I'll show my age here!

    Les Surmon/Tony lange
    Bonds, Rufus, Hinton, Kinsey
    Bailey (capt) Parker, Boyer, Glover
    Leaburn, Paul Walsh

Les Surmon only played once for Charlton in a 6-1 defeat at portsmouth, which I saw. Lange wasn't a bad keeper, hopefully Elliot will prove better over the course of time.
Alan Campball would be in my team instead of Boyer but we bought him from Arbroth Boys club for a small fee.
Leaburn preferred to Gordon watson on account of his height. I wish we had him in the team today...we would not be bottom of the table, IMO, because he was great in defence good in midfield but sadly crap in the 6 yard box.
