Behind closed doors.
            Randolph

   Bellamy Brown McGinty Solly

Wagstaff Stavrinou Arter Davisson

         Todorov Tuna

Subs: Perkins, Warren, Pell, Christie.

Troy Brown is on trial from Fulham, pretty sure he's a young pro that they're going to let go.

McGinty seems to be progressing well, starting to play in the reserves as an u16. Guessing Mambo and Thomas must be injured or unavailble for some reason though.

Comments

  • I see there wheeling out Todorov again for a final farewell.

Doubt if we'll see him play again.
  • Hopefully Tuna won't find himself out of his depth.
  • Tuna will do swimmingly well Stu!
  • 5-0 victory according to OS
  • [cite]Posted By: KillersBeard[/cite]5-0 victory according to OS

In that case, play 'em all on Sat!
  • "Thump 5 - 0"

Not seen that for a while.

Well done the Ressies especially as Saints have one of the best youth set ups in the country and I'd guess a few were in their side.
  • I cant find it?

got it - anyone have a link to a report so we know who did what?
  • from OS

Ben Davisson and Tamer Tuna both notched twice as Charlton's reserves thumped Southampton 5-0 at Sparrows Lane on Wednesday afternoon.

Just days after Charlton's first team had defeated Saints 3-2 at St Mary's, the Addicks' reserves went even better, hitting five in the behind-closed-doors totesport.com Combination League clash.

Davisson got the ball rolling in the 12th minute with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box, with Tuna increasing the advantage moments later.

Fulham trialist Troy Brown, playing in his second reserve game for the Addicks, made it 3-0 on 25 minutes, and further goals after the break from Tuna and Davisson completed the rout.

With Southampton in Championship action at Watford on Tuesday night, it was a relatively young side which took to the pitch against Charlton. But the Addicks were hardly overrun with experience themselves, with Darren Randolph, Scott Wagstaff, Harry Arter and Svetoslav Todorov the only players on show to have represented the first team.

Randolph, who has produced some fine displays for the second string in recent weeks, got the nod in goal, behind a back four of Liam Bellamy, Brown, Sean McGinty and captain Chris Solly, who once again turned in an impressive performance.

Wagstaff lined up on the right-hand side of midfield, with soon-to-be professional Alex Stavrinou partnering Harry Arter - back from a loan spell at Welling United - in the centre, and the diminutive Davisson on the left.

Bulgarian striker Todorov, who hasn't featured for Phil Parkinson's first team since the 3-2 defeat to Watford in early March, was partnered by young Tuna in attack. The substitutes' bench was made up of Lewis Perkins, Freddie Warren, Harry Pell and goalkeeper Callum Christie.

The game with the Saints had originally been scheduled to take place at Ebbsfleet United's Stonebridge Road ground, with a 7pm start. However, Ebbsfleet play a rescheduled first-team game on Thursday, so they requested the reserve match was switched to Charlton's training HQ.

Southampton actually started brightly and Randolph had to be alert to parry away a stinging drive from Sam Argent in the fifth minute after a scramble in the box had seen the ball find its way to the visitors' right-back.

A mistake by Brown on the edge of the area in the 10th minute then gave Romain Gasmi a sight of goal but his effort flew straight at Randolph.

And two minutes later Charlton were in front in spectacular fashion, Davisson picking a loose ball up on the left before cutting inside and unleashing a brilliant strike past Andrej Pernecky.

It was 2-0 in the 14th minute. Jack Saville dallied on the ball in the area and Todorov nicked it off him before setting up Tuna who couldn't miss from close range.

Bellamy was booked in the 16th minute after tugging back Jack Boyle as the Saints threatened to break away, while Solly was perhaps fortunate to get away with what looked like a foul in the box on Ryan Doble. At the other end, tenacious work from Solly sent Todorov free down the left and his pull-back was met by the stretching Wagstaff, whose effort was well saved.

But it was 3-0 in the 25th minute when Arter's corner was only cleared as far as Brown, whose half-volley found its way in, despite Pernecky getting a hand to the ball.

Saints had a chance to pull a goal back in the 27th minute but Matthew Paterson failed to connect with a header from a cross from the left, before a long-range effort from Gasmi crashed into the support holding up Randolph's net.

In the 35th minute, good work on the right by Wagstaff set up Todorov on the edge of the box but the former Portsmouth man got his attempted chip all wrong and the ball went out for a throw.

Almost immediately, Solly had to be alert to nod away a goalbound header from Lee Molyneux, who had met a corner, while Davisson almost grabbed a second with a carbon-copy of his first, jinking in from the left but seeing his right-footed effort flash just wide of the far post.

Just before half-time, Arter, whose set-pieces were a danger all afternoon, saw his inswinging corner palmed away from under the crossbar by Pernecky.

The visitors were sent out early for the start of the second period by coach Dean Gorre, but it made little difference, with Randolph a virtual spectator for the remainder of the game.

Indeed, it should have been 4-0 on 49 minutes when Wagstaff burst down the right and crossed for the unmarked Todorov, who volleyed his effort wide from eight yards. On the hour mark, Arter's corner was met by McGinty, whose header was saved. From the rebound the same player blasted his shot over the bar.

Three minutes later, though, Davisson got his second of the game, tapping into an empty net after Wagstaff had played Tuna in down the right. Wagstaff should have got himself on the scoresheet - or at least hit the target - less than 60 seconds later but he snatched at a chance after a mistake by Saville.

It was 5-0 with 16 minutes remaining when the lively Tuna picked the ball up 35 yards out before a burst of pace took him clear of a flagging Saints backline, allowing the starlet to slot past Pernecky.

Three minutes later McGinty saw a header cleared off the line, while in a rare Southampton attack, a shot from substitute Garyn Preen flashed just wide of Randolph's right-hand post.

Tuna missed a chance to take the matchball with virtually the last kick of the game when he fired over from a Perkins cross but Damian Matthew will have been more than happy at an excellent afternoon's work.

Matthew's side are in action again next Wednesday (2pm) when they take on top-of-the-table Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

  • Toddy contributed some valuable touches but little pace or much interest. Great opening goal by Davisson, screamer from 18 yards with Toddy hollering for a lay-off. 2-0 couple of minutes later, Saints throw-in back towards their keeper bounced awkwardly, Toddy challenged keeper for loose ball, which ran to Tuna to push home. 3-0, ball scrambled home from right-wing corner after messy defending by Saints.
Should have been 4-0 soon after half-time- great ball from Waggy on right wing, Toddy tried nonchalant side-foot volley, scopped it over from 10 yards. 10 minutes later, 4-0 - good interchange between Toddy and Tuna in the box, Tuna slid ball across goal for Davisson to tap in. 5-0 on about 70 mins- Tuna ran from midfield into the box, held of couple of challenges and slotted home.

Stood next to Davo's mum watching game - she was quite chuffed that he scored- twice!
Good work in centre-mid by Harry Arter and by Alex Stav, strong defending by Solly and Bellamy
  • Why behind closed doors ? Not a critisism just would like to know.
  • Two wins in a week

    I feel dizzy
  • So Tuna hit the net?
  • tuna's balls were in the net twice.

difficult to control crowds at Sparrows lane I would guess especially on a week day when the first team squad might be in.

Was switched late on from Ebbsfleet.
  • and captain Chris Solly, who once again turned in an impressive performance.

I really hope he gets his debut this season, deserves the chance. Played at left back but still puts in a solid performance.
  • Makes sense. Thanks Henry.
  • Well done Tamer, see you in the first team next season!
  • He did well. More promising than Ben Godfrey was

Most of the Saints youth team seem to already be in their first team squad.
  • No Weaver

Bloke must be loving it earning all that money and does not even get a reserve game.

Makes sense though if he is off anyway but crazy money wise that these people get all that money for basically nothing
  • Was wondering why we were that much better than them, found out (though it's not surprise) that every player of that Southampton team was under 22, and most of them were teenagers.

Still our team was very young, sounds like they all played well.
