Will a post Minty era be as turbulent and traumatic as post Curbs?

With some exciting rumours in the air I wondered what a Post Murray era would be like and compare it with the experience we have had of Curbs leaving.

I can see some parallels:-

1) Long tenure at the top
2) Adored by many and become a bit of a legend (would definately leave by the front door)
3) Some feel hes stayed on too long
4) Gone a bit stale
5) Made some dodgy signings of late
6) Hasnt commanded the same squad unity of late (allegedly)

I wonder whats in store. Will it all be plain sailing or will it be a start of another difficult period?

  • Supporting Charlton will never be plain sailing, and it would be boring if it was.

I do believe though, that too many are jumping the gun a little on all this.

It does need to happen though IMO.
  • I remember my Old Company had long service awards and the HR Director wanted it dropped because he thought long service was a bad thing. You need fresh stimulus and new challenges etc.
  • I think that after the zabeel deal there is far to much presumption and not enough fact, We dont even know if there is any subsatnce to a story in the SUN ffs.
  • No, we don't know if there is any substance in the story in the Sun. But has Peter Varney issued a denial? Not as far as I am aware - and if he hasn't denied it, then that suggests to me that there is some truth in it. I don't believe he would be irresponsible enough to allow this story to run around without rebuttal if it was a complete fiction.

On long service awards, does anyone else remember this song by Donovan, which I bought on one of those Marble Arch LPs for 14s/6d back in 1968?

    GOLDWATCH BLUES
    Donovan

I went up for my interview on the fourth day of July.
First old man he questioned me until I nearly cried,
Made me fill in forms until I shook with fear
About the colour of my toilet roll and if my cousin's queer.

    CHROUS:

Here's your goldwatch and the shackles for your chain
And your piece of paper to say you left here sane.
And if you've a son who wants a good career
Just get him to sign on the dotted line and work for fifty
    years. CHORUS.

He asked me how many jobs I'd had before.
He nearly had a heart attack when I answered, four.
Four jobs in twenty years, oh, this can never be
We only take on men who work until they die. CHORUS.

He took me outside to where the gravestones stand in line.
This is where we bury them in quick-stone and in lime
And if you come to work for us on this you must agree,
That if you're going to die please do it during tea. CHORUS.

This story that you heard you may think rather queer
But it is the truth you'll be surprised to hear.
I did not want no job upon the board,
I just wanted to take a broom and sweep the bloody floor.

    So True
  • I remember the song, Nigel ....... it used to strum it on my old guitar and sing it, back in the 70's.

    Don't tell anyone, though .... !
