Robbie Elliott Column

We've got eight games to go, and although our prospects of staying up look worse every week, one thing that is clearly evident is that there has been no lack of effort on the pitch.

We’ve tested Wolverhampton Wanderers and Reading – two clubs competing for promotion to the top flight - to the limit in recent weeks.

But unfortunately we were unable to gain victories, and they are all that matter at the moment.

On a personal note, it was great to save a penalty last Saturday against Wolves and deny a player like Sylvan Ebanks-Blake – even if none of us still knows why the referee made the decision.

I’ve seen the highlights a few times now, and it’s just not clear from any angle.

Thankfully, we didn’t concede a goal from the spot-kick – and I’ve watched my save a few times, too!

There have been a few penalties for the opposition recently, and I was disappointed I hadn’t managed to make a save against either Doncaster Rovers or Reading.

When I was on loan at Notts County and Accrington Stanley a few years ago, I established quite a reputation when it comes to penalties – I was once brought on just before the end of extra-time solely to keep goal in the penalty shoot-out! – so that has been getting frustrating for me.

I talked about it with goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, though, and we worked out a new plan for Saturday, and it worked a treat.

Wolves’ second goal was a total fluke, by the way, but we have to put those things behind us and look forward.

It’s Preston North End next this weekend, and regardless of our league position, we cannot afford to give anything other than 100 per cent.

There has been much discussion about what has gone wrong this season, but that’s not really an issue for the players at the moment.

I’m sure the management team and senior officials at the club are making plans, but we know exactly what is required from us, and that’s to get out on the pitch and represent the club with pride.

I think everyone knows I’m a boyhood fan of the club, so to say I’ve been hurting would be an understatement, but the same is equally true of the other lads.

No one wants to be where we are at the moment. You can’t get away from it because it’s all everyone wants to talk about, whether it’s the Charlton fans you see out and about or family and friends.

They’re the people we’re playing for, and will continuing playing for until the end of the season.

fair play to the rest of the article

In context, he's trying to say that the players are just focused on tomorrow's match.

And don't forget, he's being interviewed - so his comments are responses, but no one reading knows the questions.
  • good luck to him , personally don't rate him but if he get's himself in the gym and turns into a leaner, meaner goalkeeper he might make it at championship level but at the moment i think he is a third tier keeper ,which is lucky for us;-(

Good job you're not his manager, OohAah ....... you'd be telling him, "You're playing Saturday and we're all depending on you.
But I think you're crap, fat and third rate."

Inspirational. Is that Curb's pillow talk .....?

    ;o)

I'm surprised you don't rate Elliot Oohaah.

Your views are normally so sensible :-)

He has a bit to learn still but I think he has the potential to become an excellent all round keeper. I like the fact that he is not afraid to come off his line which in my view has been a criticism that could be levelled at Charlton keepers from Deano on really if not before.

Yeah and as a goalkeeper he probably won't reach his peak for another 10 years or so.

Look again Youga both hands in the back of the wolves player clearly pushes him.
  • I can see Rob going on and being one of the all-time record appearance makers at our club.

He will improve over time as all goalkeepers will, and i see him turning into a very solid, reliable goalkeeper, but not an outstanding one that will draw major attention from other clubs.

I like him, i think he is raw and inexperienced at the moment, but has a real future.
  • He is young in GK terms but at least he is getting experience.

He's strong, comes for the ball when it's in the air and gets it, very good distribution from feet and hands.

To be honest he often hasn't had much to do in games in terms of saves but he's pulled off a few decent ones.

He is a bit heavy but he can work on that.

I can see him as No.1 choice for the next two or three seasons so could easily hit 150 games for us.

Kiely spend a fair while in the lower leagues with York and Bury before having a very good 6 or 7 years in the top flight and international game so plenty of time for Robbie to develop

  • Agree with all of what Henry says but I do worry that a professional athlete is perceived to be "heavy" ! Surely the fitness coaches / sports scientists should know exactly what his optimum weight should be and if he is not hitting that then why.
  • am with ooh aah to a certain extent on this one

clearly he needs to get in the gym and get into shape properly

his physique is piss-poor for a professional athlete in my opinion and he needs to start dominating his six yard box

perhaps the two are related and if he loses his puppy fat and puts some lean muscle on he will start coming for corners like the one that led to Wolves' 2nd goal

..... Kitchen? Seriously I like him too.
  • Agree regarding positives about Robbie. Unless we get a Shay Given or somebody, who could we get who might be THAT much better than Robbie? There are a few around even in our (present) division, but he is young, and has a decent long future to hopefully develop, and anyway, any better player we could realistically get would miss out on one factor... ROBBIE IS ONE OF US!
  • .....Greenwich branch of Burger King
  • One of the few highlights of a gloomy season.

A decent pre season will deal with conditioning.
  • I'm glad he sounds like such a nice young man. And poor Waggy, badly dressed and always on the phone to his missus!
  • Don't know if this ones got legs, but my son reckons we might be bringing Robbie back on a short term loan?

    Cheers Col
  • I'd take him back on a short-term loan but Henderson is a better keeper in my opinion.
  • Id take him back too... Give Pope a bit of guidance.
  • I think he'd be a good signing, knows the club inside out, has lived down south before, has played in the championship, and had experience away from Charlton, which will have done him some good, what's not too like?
  • I'd take him back on a short-term loan but Henderson is a better keeper in my opinion.

100% agreement on that i would have thought, but a CAFC lad who can do a job in the short term if need be.

agree as well .. Pope is nowhere near good enough as yet (will he ever be ?), Elliott is not the best but he'd do a decent job during Henderson's forced absence
  • Would love him back, one of our own
  • .. Is Elliott's column a rival to Nelson's ?
