If things had gone differently

edited March 2009 in General Charlton
Charlton continued to rally after picking up a late point at Goodison park and thanks to victory against spurs at the valley in the penultimate match a point at anfield was enough to keep charlton up with Darren Randolph becoming a charlton hero saving a penalty.

07/08
Pardew added Zheng Zhi permantley to his squad, retained darren bent and brought scott parker back to the valley for 6 million. Luke young left for aston villa in a 4 million pound deal and was replaced by Yassin Moutakill. Scott PArker was made skipper.
Alan Pardews side enjoyed a terrific start to the 008/09 season and sat in 6th sport after 8 games, a slump saw charlton in 16th at christmas but a good win against everton in the cup got the addicks going again. They went on to reach the fa cup semi finals beating arsenal 4-3 on the way substitue Lloyd sam being dent off after scoring in the 93rd minute and removing his shorts, and finish 9th. Darren Bent hit 18 goals and Madjid Bougheras centre back pairing with Diawara looked very tight. Darren Ambrose scored 7 goals from midfield and Lloyd Sam enjoyed a run of 10 games impressing on the right at the end of the season and Pardew gave a debut to Jonjo shelvey who impressed at the end of the season. Pardew also brought in Hayden Mullins and Matty Etherington from westham in the transfer window etherington picking up an injury that ended his season in feb and Scott APrker returned tp the england fray.

  • That late Everton goal was a real killer.

There were about 200 of us watching it in a pub, and it was a real cracking afternoon. And then BOSH, everyone instantly knew the game was up.
  • i watched that Everton game in the horse and groom. That goal killed the atmosphere and our spirit.
  • Iain Dowie's Charlton side finished 6th in the Premier League, higher than Curbishley's Charlton ever did. The team had everything, pace and power up front with Darren Bent and JFH, backed up by Marcus Bent and Kevin Lisbie. Amdy Faye, Charlton's midfield destroyer, working with either Matt Holland or Omar Pouso in the middle, let two of Andy Reid, Cristian Bolanos, Dennis Rommedahl, Darren Ambrose and Jerome Thomas show their creative sides, scoring and assisting 40 goals between them. Charlton were solid at the back with their back four made up of internationals in the form of Young, Diawara, Hreidarsson and Gibbs. There was plenty of solid cover with Fortune, Sorondo, Kishishev, Hughes, El Karkouri and Traore, who all played some part in the season. Scott Carson won player of the year and at the end of the season signed from Liverpool permanently. The squad was backed up by some promising youngsters, winger Lloyd Sam, defenders Osei Sankofa and Kelly Youga, and the hero of the last game against Liverpool, James Walker. Dowie brought Walker back to the club after Curbishley originally released him, and on the final game of the season, with JFH and Lisbie out, Walker was on the bench against Liverpool. With 20 minutes to go, the score 1-1, Dowie sent Walker on and he scored the winner in injury time to take Charlton into Europe, winning the final UEFA Cup spot. Dowie then saved his Football Manager 2007 game and went to bed, looking forward to the Reading game next week, knowing that he would soon turn things around at Charlton.
